Taking advantage of an offer to improve Setting Results
Fakum replied to Fakum's topic in Game Performance Bugs
LOL,, Im not trying to sustain 120. If I can keep steady at 60+, Im good,, and so far, I have achieved that. Im just trying to smooth out,, I was doing good with that it seemed until i went into multiplayer and see a bit to much stuttering,, and I dropped the terrain and textures again, expecting the VRAM drop would smooth it out, but it didnt LOL,,,,Im pretty sure my monitor is not a factor here.https://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-38GL950G-B-gaming-monitor I might giv it all another test with FPS locked at 60 in NCP, if i do that should I be setting my monitor down from 120 to 60? Wouldnt that cut down a work load on the GPU? -

That is interesting indeed. I can only say that the only thing I have seen is some micro stuttering and FPS changes with the changes i have been making. Andi have fisddled with VSYNC on and off along with Gsync etc I have confirmed that setting the terrain and textures down a notch did in fact clear up some head room for the VRAM, and although i was not pleased with the visual impact (Im spoiled), it did in fact cut down on the stuttering. Also, adding SSAA 1.5 to the equation cut my Frame rates in half -

ok, so if my monitor is set to run at 120, and im getting 70 fps average in DCS, it would then make sense to have this on. and I do understand what you mean about : so if you are not in full screen mode (hence windowed), and this setting is set to full screen mode, then there is no effect. it makes sense to do windowed / full screen then it would always be enabled. thanks -

Thanks for both tips this silverdevil Thanks for elaborating on that, I have not experienced any tearing with any settings, so would i benefit more with it on or off I wonder,, -

LOL,,, this all has been very welcome advise, and i have tried to digest it all, but will admit, Im ready to check myself in somewhere LOL. Kidding aside, I have read thru this entire thread daily, tried to make notes on the keypoints and have experimented. Unfortunately, I dont know which way is down anymore. I am NOT really focusing so much on FPS, Its the micro stuttering. Right now, I seem to only be getting the quick hiccup evry couple minutes or so,, the side views seem fairly smooth. I belive glides response to those stutters make sense with me maxing out my Vram. My confusion at this point is all the chatter about Vsync & Gsync, Full Screen. Should I use any of them, and in what combinations? I mean, you can turn Vsync on in NCP, leave it off in DCS and vice versa, you can turn Vsync to fast in NCP, do you run Gsync as well, do you run full screen with or without and on and on and on,,, then it comes to the actual testing. what is the fastest method? Testing FPS is fast, but trying a new setting to check for stuttering is lengthy,, I mean you get in the air and look around for awhile and ask your self if you see a noticeable difference, or anything at all? This has been the most challenging and time consuming, and if you really dont know what you really should be changing to what, its makes it more difficult. Again, Im focusing on microstutters and settings impacting that,, vsync, gsync, fullscreen and possible capping of fps to 60? -

No on the 120 FPS,, as I stated above, that was an error on my part only using the monitors FPS feature, now I am only using DCS FPS meter. I am getting 70 - 80 FPS running on Multiplayer I frequent. I found a specific instant action on Syria map in the Hornet (Airfield Defense) that gives me 32 FPS on the ramp, and KA-50 on Syria Map gives me 60 ish on the ramp, so those 2 are the ones I have been using for testing. I will run task manager to check my ram usage tonight, thanks. -

Heres another question not yet discussed, where to test? For just testing some framerates, I would jump into 2 specific instant action scenarios so I could repeat tests accurately. So what about testing just to monitor for any form of stuttering? Since I am currently focusing on making changes to minimize any form of stuttering, should I also be doing this testing in Instant Action? Initially, it would seem that makes sense, but could there be any reasons why I would want to make sure I am in a multiplayer server instead? This question occurred to me as I have been flying in the server that I am typically in, and I was getting occasional split second freezing, and a quick sputter. Not consistent, and I couldn't help but wonder if the cause was from my PC or the actual server? -

Ozmandi, As grateful as I would be to improve my FPS, I'm actually more interested in smoothing things out, decreasing the stuttering. Its not as horrible now with my ongoing tinkering. Flying Choppers, I find myself more often looing out the sides then forward. Tinkering with achieving smoother performance, Im hoping the biproduct of that may also improve DCD FPS. Regarding GeForce Experience, no, I dont have it installed. I am using DCS for that. I was struggling with seeing those numbers as well but yesterday I discovered you can increase the size of that in DCS Graphics options, So that was a BIG help! Thanks for your advise. Glide, I am tinkering with Vsync/G Sync,, but so far only from running an instant action for a minute on the ramp, I have to test inflight still, I havent seen any differences as of yet, but expect to when fly like the Hornet fast over land mass -

TIME OUT! Boy, did I mess up! Apologies in advance. I have been using my monitors FPS Counter for reference instead of DCS FPS Counter, I have just used DCS FPS and it differs from Monitor FPS Counter? Running both at the same, they BOTH show frame rates of about 32 in Instant Action, then when I hit ALT-ENT,,, DCS FPS stays at 32ish, but monitor shows 120. I really messed myself up with that! I thought I hit the jackpot. Sorry for unintentionally mis-leading. I have to drop back and punt again. -

I believe you, I just wanted to be clear that it is apparent that having Full Screen checked or unchecked had no impact in my ability to run at a solid 120FPS. I got the impression from glide that he may have been thinking that it did, along with Vsync? I may have misinterpreted that as well,,, just wanted to clarify that neither made a difference. Thanks -

I just want to clear up what appears to be a misconception here. I get the 120 solid FPS with Fullscreen checked and unchecked, VSync on or off. When I start DCS and get into an instant action, i am seeing about 60ish FPS, as soon as I hit ALt-ENT. it jumps to 120 and locks there. Thats with Fullscreen in either mode, and with VYSYNC on or off. And by the way, I was testing vsync from only within NCP. Last nites test run in multiplayer was with GSync off, Vsync Fast, Full screen checked on. My original DCS Options for graphics remain untouched otherwise at this time. Like I said earlier, the MAJOR change came when I restored NCP Global settings to default, added DCS to the programs list and altered only a few suggested settings in this thread. And I cant emphasize enough, I noticed right off the bat that as soon as I started TrackIR on the desktop, I didnt see ANY FPS drop like I always did in the past,, 120 down to 10 is now non existent. I believe there might be a relationship there. I know for certain in the recent past, that i would occasionally hit ALT-Enter and watch the frames jump from 30s/60s to 120 for a second and drop right back down. Now they stay high! Again, I think I can be very satisfied with the FPS side of things,, I just want to tweak for smoothness, and last night was very satisfying to start with, There is some room to work it seems, but if I cant improve on what I have already established, I will still be very satisfied with the improvement. -

I will giv it a shot tomorrow,, I just went into multiplayer for over an hour with 3 different modules,, FPS held solid at 120, never dropped below. I am blown away at this for now,,,, nice crisp graphics and pretty dam smooth, no DCS Settings changes yet done except its in Full Screen -

Ok, gottcha, and by the way, i turned Gsync off, and i still only have OFF or 1X as an option under SSAA (Topic for another thread, and its not important to me right now) So what about my question regarding NCP settings on the fly thanks? -

VSYNC is OFF, GSYNC=ON. TrackIR=ON, are you suggesting that I turn VSYNC ON, If so what do I do about GYSYNC? Thats really weird!!!! I say that because I switch my monito FROM my typical Desktop preferred resolution of 1680 x 1050 TO 3840 x 1600 BEFORE i start DCS because my DCS Resolution is set for 3840 x 1600. If I dont make that switch 1st, DCS will pop up and all of its GUI is not shown, and I cant click on any features because they are not shown. So now that the desktop res matches the dcs res, when I run DCS, FPS is about 60, I then hit ALT-ENT and FPS becomes 120 solid. There is no resolution differences between what the monitor is set for compared to DCS settings,,, so I dont get that? I do understand what you meant when you compared 2 different settings. -

No,, havnt touched that,,,I forgot about even trying that with all the other stuff I hav been fiddling with,,, thanks for reminding me I will experiment with that, but right now, it looks like my FPS is NOT something Im trying to improve on, as it is rock solid at 120. I think I should be focusing on the stuttering instead? I dont know if those things you told me to adjust will make things more fluid, but at the sacrifice of picture quality/sharpness/clarity? -

Fakum replied to Fakum's topic in Game Performance Bugs
ok, so I will take SSAA off the table for now then,, I have been switching back and forth today, havnt seen a difference yet, and I have been matching the NCP to those changes, which actually brings me to another important question. I can change NCP settings on the fly right? I can keep DCS open while Im making changes in there right? Or do I need to close out DCS every change in NCP? It seems right now, no matter what I do, I am getting 120 FPS solid, I know that's what its says on the FPS counter, I cant help to believe something else must be getting robbed? Wit thta being said, i'm more than satisfied with the FPS, now i just gotta figure out the right combination of settings to get the jittery motion smoothed out, which is what Im noticing primarily looking left or right. that would be my goal at this point,,, smooooooooth! -

I dont know what is considered "top end range graphics card" but I assume my 2080 TI Hybrid would be? In either case, I only see an option for SSAA at OFF or 1.5x? I dont see a 2x in the drop down? -

Yeah, I have been running benchmarks with monitor at both 60 and 120. In either configuration, TrackIR was ALWAYS dropping down to 10 when I started it. -

I have to presume it has everything to do with a NCP setting I had set in the Global Section sine this is a result of the NCP restore. I have not changed anything in DCS Options yet -

1st things I noticed off the bat,, set NCP to "Restore" and added DCS to the programs list and set Power MGT to MAX Perf, VSYNC to OFF, GSync to Full Screen only for DCS. Right away, I see that when I start TrackIR (Before I do anything else), My frames dont drop at all on desktop (Thats a good thing). Before my desktop would be running 120 FPS, Starting TrackIR would drop it to like 10,,, then I would have to minimize TrackIR, and and click the mouse somewhere on the desktop and it would jump back to 120. 2nd thing I noticed was now when I run DCS to start my benchmarking,,, the frames are still showing their baseline FPS (60 ish in KA-50 on Syria map 32 ish in F-18 on Syria Map) , what I am now seeing is that when I load these Instant Actions for benchmarking, the initial frame rates noted above are present, but when I hit ALT-ENTER, the frame rates jump up to 120, and they stay there! Im currently guessing that is a good thing for now, but in my previous benchmarking over the last few days (prior to setting NCP to "RESTORE") Hitting ALT-ENT simply resulted in a quick jump to 120 and going right back to the 60/32 FPS?
