It almost certainly shouldn't be $70, that appears to be a Steam-specific issue as its $56.99 direct and was about $7 less again if you bought it prior to launch. And no one says you have to buy every single map, just like you don't have to buy every single plane (I passed on buying Afghanistan but bought Iraq as I think it'll the more popular for user created content in time). Limited initial impressions (i've only spent about an hour flying around so far) are fairly good. The mountain area is stunning (possibly the best in any map i've played so far) although I admit I wasn't blown away overflying Baghdad (not terrible, not great). EDIT: Is there a list anywhere of currently implemented POIs on the map and their rough locations?

Yeah, even the existing basic features functioning competently would feel like a small win.

I wasn't particularly bothered about Afghanistan but this has piqued my interest. I will most likely hold off until there is at least a half decent release date set though.

Exactly this. I've been using DCS since the original FC days and don't think I ever had it via Steam and certainly remember a lot of chatter of people moving licences across from Steam for various reasons. I'm also yet to ever play it on MP.

Did you not consider circling back around to pick yourself up?

I'd swear it also got a little more tricky to 'grease it' when they did the update a few months back to make the gear a little less indestructible, but it is indeed very possible to do a flared landing. I'd say there is only the F-15 that is easier to put down on the deck gracefully. I still haven't mastered landing the Phantom in a fashion that doesn't dislodge any fillings from your teeth though.

Given some of my wayward early efforts against targets on the old airfield then i'm pretty certain the church is not there anymore
-
I feel kinda bad now that i've discovered there is a church nearby.

I presume what you were referring to is the hinged outer cap that protects the docking mechanism (the actual pressure door would be at the cabin end of the docking tunnel). Without knowing how automated the crewless re-entry process is then one assumes it gets closed either by remote command or by the onboard computer. Obviously its mechanically operated otherwise they wouldn't have been able to open it to dock in the first place. The Dragon capsule has a similar thing.

I graciously decline taking the unwarranted credit and i'm also glad the OP got the issue sorted
-
A 500 error suggests it might well be an issue on DCS' validation server rather than an issue on the client machine.

RAF tinkered with a few radio based systems with varying degrees of assistance and success (Oboe, Gee, Gee H) as did the Luftwaffe. All for bombers though given the kit and crew resource required. Certainly nothing like modern radio nav aids in terms of end user experience.

Is there any actual confirmation that RB doesn't have the source code? It seems like complete conjecture to me, not to mention utterly illogical from RB's standpoint. The existence of the time bomb certainly doesn't automatically imply that RB didn't have possession of all or at least most of the underlying source code.

You can have escrow arrangements (a place I used to code for had it as part of the contract with a major customer) where a copy of any code is uploaded to a third-party repository and only actually handed over to the other party in very specific circumstances (e.g. the vendor goes bust). As others have mentioned though, having the source code only solves part of the problem.

Having seen it do several displays IRL then it is remarkably nimble with no load/low fuel.

And Razbam were connected with earlier iterations of MSFS for a great many years before they went anywhere near DCS, as were IndiaFoxtrotEcho. If you've got the resources to write content for multiple sims (especially when MSFS has a potential customer base orders of magnitude larger for products that are generally orders of magnitude less complex than DCS) then you'd be pretty daft not too.

I've not mixed with Winwing but have Virpil + VKB currently (was CH + VKB). The only real challenge you're ever likely going to run into if you want use modes to completely change the mappings on all devices at the flick of a switch (I do this via Joystick Gremlin and previously used JoytoKey). I pretty much never touch the brand-specific software except for calibration/initial axis setup purposes.

Authorization failed after latest patch

Seeing the same thing here (legacy FC3 owner, haven't bought FC2024) -
The short answer is they're ticked off for not getting paid and its a way of hitting back. Last time I checked (admittedly in UK law) then its perfectly legal to do this (you can't make something destroy itself but you can make it simply stop working) and its not unheard of for it to happen (e.g. contractors with bad client relationships so if the final bill doesn't get paid then the software is eventually bricked without further intervention). Whether it reflects badly on the dev is much more subjective, but I think we can all understand their grievance if the bills ain't getting paid.

Hmmm, no source code provided and it sounds like its basically fudging the system time but at a highly localised level. Nice that someone has made the effort but i'll pass for now I think.
-
I doubt any non-compete clause would mean a damn thing now if RB haven't kept up their end of the contract with the devs. In a lot of jurisdictions they're basically unenforceable for any meaningful period of time anyway.
-
They wouldn't necessarily have to update every single one but they may well have to regularly rebuild ones that are direct touchpoints to the core DCS code. The ones tripping of certain A/V products is a more complicated issue that can be for a multitude of reasons (and i've been gaming long enough to have seen it happen a few times with other titles down the years for no good reason). And yeah, i'd agree the general situation is a highly imperfect current state of affairs and I don't think anyone would disagree on that score.
-
They might well just rebuild them as a matter of course on every release. Without being able to compare them with prior versions it is difficult to judge if any actual change occurred.

Same here. I'll just park it in the hangar for a little while longer, see if it gets fixed and then go from there.
