1. Ok that makes sense. I am sure there are times when things get moved between when intel had their location and when a plane gets to the site.
2. Mistermann I sure appreciate your helping me but this is over my head. I read through your suggestion Fri afternoon and realized I wasn't following it. We were gone over the weekend so I just read though again 4-5 times and I still don't follow. Thank you anyway.
3. I 'think' I am following this discussion, but I don't understand part of it. If you already have your target set by WPTDSG why would you be using the FLIR at the same time?
4. Norman that is a very good point. I never thought of it that way. In other words I still have 90 degrees of the circumference of a circle to fly while the GS is showing it like I am going straight in from the circumference to the center ( the carrier ). Thank you.
5. Is this what you need? I did a copy/paste ["created"] = "Sat Mar 26 12:47:54 2022", ["player"] = "New Pilot", ["campaign"] = "C:/Users/craig/Saved Games/DCS/Missions/Campaigns/en/USNF97.cmp", ["status"] = "Active", ["history"] = { [1] = { ["datetime"] = "Thu Mar 31 10:22:28 2022", ["result"] = 100, ["aaKills"] = 2, ["agKills"] = 0, ["deathsCount"] = 0, ["stage"] = 1, ["mission"] = "Eviction Notice.miz", }, -- end of [1] }, -- end of ["history"] }, -- end of [19] }, -- end of ["games"] ["lastGame"] = 19, ["statistics"] =
6. I am still in USNF97 campaign. Got 'Success' in the first mission. Good but I went to go to the next mission and ended up entering the first one again. Then I apparently closed it out wrong and lost my win and had to start over. So got a 'Success' again and am now trying to figure how to move on to the 2nd mission. If I hit the X in the top right of the screen, or the 'close' button lower left, I get this top right x by craig stuard, on Flickr If I hit the 'End Mission' I get this end mission by craig stuard, on Flickr That seems pretty scary so I hit no. But now I can't move on to the 2nd mission. I don't know if this is a problem w/ this older campaign, or w/ the more recent new campaign system from ED. What is my next step?
7. All the above makes sense. I fly a lot of user supplied SP missions and had noticed some times the plane has one or the other FLIR. But I hadn't made the correlation of type of FLIR vs land or carrier. Thanks guys.
8. I only fly the FA-18 so I may be missing the answer. I am curious, first we had Litening and then ATFLIR. I was thinking maybe the Litening would go away but it is still here. Is it because different US fighter jets are from different eras so there needs to be more than one Flir? Just thinking w/ all the work Ed is doing to fix things, bring new things etc, having just one flir to work with could lower their work load.
9. Well I got it finally. Wingman and I managed to kill all 4 Migs, found the Yeltsin 727 and flew west 50 miles or so to a 'safe' line.
10. How do I win the first mission? Shot down all the Migs. Tried to escort the 727 but he kept flying an orbit over the carrier. I got a radio call from him saying thanks and please stay with us as we fly toward Ukraine. But he never left the orbit, so I finally landed on the carrier and got a msg that I had effed up and because of my lack of success......BTW why is there a 727 and a 737? I had to go to the F10 map and click each one to figure which one I was supposed to escort. I initially headed to escort the only one I could see ( from my FA-18 cockpit) and he was going west but I finally realized he was going to much north and had to look at the F10 map to find the correct plane.
11. near_blind, thanks I would never have guessed that.
12. Agreed. I have seen this w/ both the carrier and land airbases. I don't know if there is a standard max distance or not. I usually cheat a little, look at the F10 map, and figure my own bearing. At some point I try tacan again and there it is.
13. 'Hanger' doors? Those ships must be larger than they look. What goes in the hangers?
14. Recently I have been flying user missions and several have these ships on each side of the carrier. What does the bright MM mean on each ship.
15. I am glad you got it working. One suggestion I have is wait until down to 180-190 to go full flaps. I find that anything above that causes the plane to head for the sky which I have to counter w/ the stick. If you wait til 180-190 the flaps slow the plane quickly (like one would expect) and near zero heading to the sky.
16. I have always thought that they appear to be pretty weak but apparently they are normal. I always go to full air brake as soon as the tires hit and at about 110kn I pull the stick all the way back. I understand that full up elevator creates a lot of drag. I don't run off any runways so I guess they are acceptable.
17. I agree w/ Lange. I just start flying with minimum controls and add them as I learn. And sometimes I change something as I learn more about a certain feature. I started w/ Chucks Guide info and went from there.
18. I started flying missions a bit more than a year ago. Found out real quick you need scores to move to the next mission. Maybe 4-5 months ago DCS came out w/ a way that you could move on regardless of score. So I got used to looking at scores. But I also go back to DCS provided missions. The page looks the same but what scores that show up don't seem to mean much. Same w/ SP missions from the user files. And there is both a score and a result ( I think those are the terms) which are different. I wouldn't mind scores but I suspect they must be difficult to set up when writing a mission so I doubt we will see much of them.

F-18 FLIR

Yep, I am sure it is not just us on DCS. But recently I have flown several missions where the flir display shows nothing but light green. Not even a shadow of an island or a horizon. I hope the RL guys don't have it that bad. I will say though that I love Atflir for bombing stationary targets. Lot's of fun designating the target w/ the flir (or multiple targets) and then watching the hit or hits either on the flir or in F6.
20. Thought I'd try something completely different so loaded four 1000# dumb bombs and set fuse to delayed. Figured I'd try 200ft or less approach, fly over the airport and just drop them. Hah, shot down well before feet dry. Think I will move on to another mission.
21. I downloaded this and started flying it. You have several places you can start from as well as several panes you can fly, and the plane starts out unarmed so you can load whatever you like and then go pound the Saipan airport. The airport is just covered w/ sams etc. So flying the FA-18, I first tried GPS bombs. But you need to be well within sam range to launch them so I was shot down. So then I looked at ranges for glide bombs. Tried SLAMs and could launch way out of sam range so I was OK but the SLAMs were shot down. Tried JSOW-As and they were shot down. I will try HARMS next but there are so many sams that I expect that I will shoot all the HARMS and, even if they are not shot down, 4 HARMs will not be enough, to take out the sams. Also taking 4 HARMs won't leave me capacity for bombs. I 'think' that I need 3 wingmen to do much good but out of curiosity, any thoughts on techniques/arms that might let me do some damage and get back home?

F-18 FLIR

Yep, Atflir is a real pain to use. I always have to screw around w/ brightness and contrast knobs. I also have problems w/ moving targets.
23. I am a fan of the 'just jump in and start flying' process. DCS has 'instant action' missions one of which is 'free flight' or similar. You start in the air flying along at 300 or so. Start with that. Get familiar w/ the L Shift - R key combination. No matter what mission you are in, when you get screwed up, hit those keys to Re-start. There are many missions in the free Caucuses map that comes w/ the game, more that come w/ a specific plane, and more that come w/ each new map that you buy. Learn about the pause and active pause buttons. While learning something new I use them a bunch. Pause stops the whole game so you can check something. Active pause stops your plane but everything else keeps moving and all your cockpit buttons remain active. So you can change a setting while active paused. There is also a key combination that will get you to your web browser after you hit pause. I do the same but have my screen set up so I can see the buttons across the bottom one of which is my browser. So I hit pause go to the web or Chucks Guide, look for my answer, back to DCS to make a change. One suggestion- remember this is FUN. So, if you get frustrated w/ something, drop it and go to another mission that you enjoy. Try not to shut down DCS unhappy.
24. It's been 2 years since I used buttons to look around so I may be wrong. But I remember there were several different ways to assign buttons for moving the view. I 'think' that what you mention is in there somewhere. When I run into a button assignment problem I actually make notes of my changes. I also take a cell phone pic of the assignment screen before and after I make a change. I went too far one time and lost track so since then I do the above. Keep asking questions as we all started somewhere and I am sure it will be worth it to you once you are over a few teething problems.
25. Don't forget to look at single missions too.
