  1. An IR pointer will heavily diffuse way faster than a laser. Therefore, an IR pointer will become 'pointless' as a point source of light faster. As for lasers, they too dissipate and spread. But they have a far more effective range. They track the distance the moon is closing in on Earth by bouncing laser energy off it. But, as I stated, it too will diffuse over very long distances. IR pointer: great for tactical use. laser: much more accurate over longer distances
  2. Cracking videos! Really help me out!
  3. Man, I've lost so many activations with hardware problems causing reinstalls over time. I wonder, will I get activations back if I email DCS?
  4. Not had one problem with win8. Purring like a kitten!
  5. This sounds awesome and I'll certainly be buying it! Question, does this mean there will be a dynamic campaign involved in Combined Arms or is it still the same theater building environment but with more control of the battlefield?
  6. Yep, Firefox worked!!! Cheers Viper :-)
  7. Good point, well presented!!! OK, lets try Firefox! Sitrep in 5 mins!
  8. OK, so I'm trying to buy BS2. Can't log into the Cart cos it keeps logging me out. I'm using Chrome. What am I supposed to do next?
  9. I cant get it to work in Chrome!
  10. Welcome fellow UK bloke!!!! I hope you find the forums useful, as we all do :-)
  11. No Rel, That's your flights assigned call sign. Not the same as the group ID, Own ID
  12. OK, got the following settings which I'm happy with: Textures: Medium Scenes: Medium Civ Traffic: Off Water: Low Visib Range: Medium Heat Blur: Off Shadows: High Res Cockpit display: 512 MSAA: Off HDR: Low Vsync: Unchecked Cockpit Shadows: Unchecked MSSAA: Unchecked Clutter Brushes: Far Left Trees: Far left Mirrors: Unchecked. Getting ave FPS around the 20-30ish mark. That's good enough for me :-) Thanks for your input and thanks to Raptor of the 16th ACCW for his excellent input also :-) Cheers all.
  13. I'll see if that makes a difference :-) Thanks hassata
  14. Well I wanted to see targets. Everything else I can live with.
  15. I've not got the best pc in the world and have been having problems with FPS but after messing about with settings, here are the ones that work best for me which allow the smoothest flight around high density action and the airbases. Firstly, as a marker of just how out dated my machine is, and therefore you can judge if these settings will work for you if you are in the same boat as me: Specs: Intel Quad Core2 Q6600 @2.4Ghz 4Mb DDR2 RAM Nvidia 8800GT Win7 64bit Settings: Textures: Low Scenes: Medium Civ Traffic: Off Water: Low Visib Range: High Heat Blur: Off Shadows: Low Res Cockpit display: 1024 every frame MSAA: Off HDR: Low Vsync: Unchecked Cockpit Shadows: Unchecked MSSAA: Unchecked Clutter Brushes: Far Left Trees: Far left Mirrors: Unchecked. These settings allow for an immersive experience with a flyable sim (stutters in places but hey - can't win them all). It's still pretty good just with some of the bells and whistles turned off. Man, I can't wait to get a better spec machine and see it in its glory!!! I hope that helps some of you struggling with FPS :-) Mirrors: Unchecked
  16. Great info there. I promise I'm not arguing a point, I obviously don't know everything about these things and want to learn more and your post just then has taught me more. Thanks buddy ;-)
  17. Well obviously, but the "all aspect" aspect of them is only made possible by them being able to lock the trailing edge heat signatures from a nose on aspect, and a combination of leading edge and exhaust signatures from a 3/9 aspect. Obviously from the rear they will lock onto the exhaust heat cos that is the largest signature. But my point was that older missile systems aren't "all aspect". That was my only point. But you are right though. From a rear aspect they will lock onto the exhaust gasses. The A10 is designed to minimise this to a degree with the placement of the engines being masked by the tail and vertical stabs. But it only works to a degree.
  18. Radar doesn't give a monkeys about engines apart from the returns the engine cowlings will generate, especially poignant to the A10. As for IR missiles, only old IR missiles go for engines. The modern ones go for engines and leading edge heat returns. They are so sensitive that they can detect heat returns from the front of the wings, tail and nose that's why some modern aircraft, especially larger tactical aircraft like the C130s spray complex flare patterns to spoof the modern IR seakers ability to ignore point heat sources like a single or a few flares and favour aeroplane shaped heat sources. Not sure if this is modelled in A10 though. I doubt it. I tried to get info from a Chinook pilot I know about the flare patterns they use but they are classified. Shame - it would have been interesting to find out a bit more about it.
  19. One of the ways to do it would be to point the nose of the jet at the RWR threat, scan the tgp out 5ish miles on your 12 o'clock, turn away and defend if necessary, then get some distance and height then turm around, face the threat again and scan back and forward till you find the threat. Depends what it is of course. SAMs have different ranges. The RWR circles are threat priority. Inside the circle means the threat is within range to shoot and kill with a high PK. Outside the circle means it is not as high a threat and it's PK is low, or indeed non existant. Try searching when the threat is outside the circle. If it comes inside then get away fast and try again.
  20. My machine is pretty low end now a days and after 1.1.0.8 frame rates are down so low as to make flying pretty pointless. Win 7 64 bit Nvidia 8800GT 4 Gigs DDR2 RAM Intel Quad Core @ 2.4MHz Asus P5N32E-sli plus Mobo. I'm a student right now so need to wait till the end of my degree to get a new machine. It's going to be a long 4 months!!!!!! Airbase 5(ish) FPS In the air is ok at around 15-20 when not much is going on.
  21. Didn't realise I had to. I would have done otherwise :-( Actually, in two instances I couldn't anyway as my machine died and I needed to install a new OS, first reinstall ended up corrupt and second one was good to go.
  22. I'm on 5 to go. Cos of reinstalls. It's only been on this machine!
  23. Just crop that bit off the finished film clips. Simple.
  24. What are you all on about? Vinyl? DVD? Binary? Tickertape? There must have been some huge technology leap in recent years that I'm totally unaware of!!! Now excuse me while I get back to my abacus to try and tally the number of wolves that are trying to eat my flock of sheep. I wish the bloody Romans would hurry up and invade. They might have some new technology.
