  1. Well, I appreciate the very thorough post and that you're trying to suggest a solution but, whether we agree or disagree about the mechanics and adjustment of the headset (and I'm sure there are other factors involved, such as the shape of my head and seating position), the fact remains that I have it adjusted correctly, it does lift from my face and I need a chin strap, or something! As an aside, on the issue of comfort, I've always found the halo type head strap, like that on the Rift S, to be most comfortable. It seems to even the pressure out around your head better and just feels generally more comfortable. I know a lot of people seem to rate the G2 as being really comfortable but I just don't see it. Maybe I'm an alien!
  2. No, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying because of the way it's constructed it has a natural tendency to swivel upwards. You don't pull the strap off the back off your head if you're not taking it off but are just having a quick peek out. I'll be surprised if most people do that when you're just peeking under. I'm using that as an example of how it's naturally inclined to move. How you decide to take it off your head is a different issue to how it moves once it's seated on your head. With the PSVR and Rift S, I use the method you suggest, I loosen the back first because they have the twist clamps on the back. With the G2 and Quest 2, because they're velcro and stretchy, I tend to lift it up off my face first so I don't disturb the way I have the velcro adjusted.
  3. I'm using the G2 but also have a Quest 2 that suffers from a similar problem, as did my Rift S and PSVR. I have the back of the strap properly cradling the base of my head but it still moves. Because the strap is attached by swivel points on either side and a strap on the top, it's naturally prone to swivel upwards. In fact, that's exactly what you do when you remove the headset, or if you want to take a quick peek out, you swivel it up off your face because there's no other direction it can go. You're right, I'm sure a lot of it is down to the individuals face shape and some don't feel affected but I'm sure I'm not the only one who experiences this.
  4. When flying DCS in VR the biggest irritation I have is, when you have to look down into the cockpit, the headset tends to lift away from your face and everything goes blurred. The only solution is to either have the straps so tight it's uncomfortable and you have red marks on your face for the next 5 weeks (and even that doesn't cure it completely), or to hold the headset with your hand against your face whenever you're looking down. The further down you have to look, especially if you've got your chin buried in your chest craning hard to click that switch that's tucked down and behind you on a side panel, the worse it is. It seems the only solution is to have some sort of chin strap connected to the headset that prevents it from lifting away from your face when looking down. I suspect most manufacturers haven't given much thought to this in the designs of their straps. I imagine they assume most VR games are played with you just looking forward most of the time. And for most people, I imagine, that's probably true. We're a niche bunch!
  5. Maybe it's just because the F-14 and F-16 are more demanding and resource hungry for some reason? I've noticed both those modules are the most demanding to run in terms of good fps even in single player.
  6. I think it would be nice to have animations climbing up ladders and into the cockpit etc. but for me the most important thing is to be able to walk around the aircraft externally, so if it would make it quicker to implement I think something like a brief black screen transition, as has been suggested, between cockpit and outside would work fine and animations could be worked on for a later date.
  7. Yes, I've watched that interview and do seem to remember it being mentioned now actually. Maybe that's where I subconsciously got the idea and had forgotten about it! There might actually be more work involved than I at first thought. I took a VR flight in the Gazelle, landed it in a field and stepped outside of the cockpit for a wonder around outside; I noticed that the outside of the helicopter is not actually modelled, just the parts that you can see from the pilot's seat. So maybe there is a lot more work needed in modelling the outsides of the aircraft for VR.
  8. I agree with everything streakeagle says here. Well summed up. I also have both. G2 is definitely better for DCS but yes, Q2 is surprisingly good and not too far behind in terms of clarity imo. But it seems to take even more resources than the G2 to achieve that clarity and I was also sometimes having to cut my DCS sessions short due to the battery going flat. The only question mark over the G2 seems to be reliability. I also have both and have also been using my Q2 as a backup while my G2 was out of commission waiting for a new USB cable. I got a new cable delivered from HP this weekend after about a three week wait and I'm using my G2 again. I know it's a luxury, but if you can afford both, get both, especially if you have other family members that enjoy using VR. Use the G2 for DCS and let them use the Q2 and for yourself as a DCS backup. I took my old Rift S round to a friend's for him to borrow to get him set up with DCS VR, but I also took my Quest 2 round to show them and what blew them away was not DCS VR but how easy and convenient it was to just quickly whip the Q2 headset on and immediately be in VR!
  9. What VR headsets anticipated or rumoured to be coming out over the coming months are people most looking forward to, to compete with or replace what appear to be the two most popular at the moment - the G2 and the Quest 2? (I'm aware people are using other headsets, just as Pimax and Valve etc. but I get the feeling that the G2 and Quest 2 are the current headsets of choice for most people.) I'm aware of the DecaGear and I've just heard rumours of a new HTC standalone headset for later this year. Are there any others? For me, I really like the sound of the DecaGear. I like the clarity of the G2 but the value, convenience, software, ease of use and standalone portability of the Quest 2. If the DecaGear can combine the best of both of these, without the dreaded FB ties, it could be a real winner.
  10. I checked the services tab and Oculus is already set to manual. In any case I restarted the PC and that seemed to fix it, Oculus is no longer automatically starting up and DCS is running again with the G2. Thanks.
  11. So, a new USB cable arrived from HP today and my G2 is working again! I've literally only tried it for 5 mins so far, so I'll have to use it for a bit longer yet to see if it continues to work, but hopefully it does. I've got a new issue now though, now that my G2 is working again. I start up DCS and as soon as I try to start a mission DCS crashes. In fact it just crashed before I even had a chance to start a mission. DCS has been working perfectly with my Quest 2 and I wasn't previously having any issues with the G2 when it was working. It looks like I'll have to spend the rest of my evening solving this issue now. One strange thing is, I've got my Oculus software to only run as administrator, so that it has to ask my permission to start up. I did this to prevent it from starting when I was running the G2. And every time I've been using my Quest 2 with DCS the Oculus software has been asking for permission to run, as it should. Now I'm using the G2 again, when I start up DCS the Oculus software is automatically starting and running in the background without permission, as well as Steam VR and WMR, so I have to close it manually. I wonder if this is causing the crashing. When I close the Oculus software it's closing DCS?
  12. Yes, as Hoirtel said, I get 72fps when I'm just static in the menu, so I'm guessing that means it's running at 72Hz even though I've got it set to 90Hz. I get around 36fps when in flight, sometimes less, sometimes more, depending on what's going on.
  13. Ah, sorry, I misunderstood. You're saying you can still see the options for the different settings but it doesn't actually run at that. Yes, you're correct, I have the same. I have it set to 90Hz but when I put the FPS counter up in DCS it says 72.
  14. That's strange, I'm running version 27.0.0.27.507 and my Quest 2 is still running at 90Hz. I have the options to run at 72, 80 or 90Hz.
  15. Are you sat far enough back in the seat? If you look behind you is the ejector seat headrest right behind your head as it should be? Usually when I start in the Tomcat the ejector seat is too far back behind me, as if I'm sat on the edge of the seat and not fully back in the seat. I fix it by leaning forward, resetting the VR view, then sitting back again and you should find yourself sitting properly further back in the seat. I'm then able to better look down and behind at the switches on the side panels.
  16. Interesting. Your findings might indicate that it is my cable that's broken. I'm hoping it is. I had an email from Dell parts indicating that the had received the request to pick and send me a new cable but no news yet on when they will ship it. When I first got my G2 I was running perfectly fine at 90Hz, then I got the snowy sparkles and black screens, switching to 60Hz fixed it for a short time before they returned and the connection eventually failed completely. Maybe I had a slowly failing cable...
  17. I'm using an upgraded Dell XPS 85000. I had my work PC replaced and having no PC at home I decided to take the old one home just to try out some PC gaming on the cheap. I discovered DCS and it soon became a whole lot less cheap! I've replaced the GPU, RAM, power supply and hard drive with an SSD. I'll eventually also replace the CPU, motherboard and case, so eventually it'll become an entirely new PC. Regarding my G2, unfortunately it's not working at the moment. I'm waiting for a new cable from HP, so I can't screenshot my settings and I've tweaked them a bit since to run my Quest2, but if I remember correctly, I'm running: Textures: High Terrain Textures: Low (Don't notice much difference but gain some FPS) Civ. Traffic: Off Water: High (I like those reflections) Visib Range: High Heat Blur: Low (or might be off - not sure) Shadows: Flat (or low - whatever is the lowest setting) Res. of Cockpit Displays: 1024 MSAA: x2 Lens Effects: Flare Anisotropic Filtering: x4 Terrain Object Shadows: Not sure - might be Off or Flat Cockpit Global Illumination: Off I'm getting approx. 30 - 55 FPS with my Quest2, depending on the mission and was getting similar with the G2. I think I was running about 54% per-app resolution in Steam VR.
  18. I think your PC should run a G2 just fine. I was running mine with an old i7-3770, 32 GB DDR3 RAM and an AMD 5700XT.
  19. Interesting. I'm also running an i7-3770 on an old upgraded Dell workstation, but with a slightly weaker AMD 5700 XT, 32GB DDR3 RAM, 1Tb SSD drive and I had no problem running my G2 - until it broke. At least I think it's broken, I'm waiting on a new cable from HP to test. The G2 actually ran better than my Quest2 does. The Link cable seems to take up more computing resources.
  20. There's already the ability to walk around the terrain, after ejecting, for example. So how difficult would it be, when starting cold and dark, to add the option to start with the pilot stood next to the aircraft with the ability to walk around it? And if you walk up to a specific spot next to the cockpit, for example at the base of the ladder, if there's one modelled (or simply next to the door for helicopters), you could press a key bind that would trigger a first person animation of the pilot climbing into the cockpit and vise versa, climbing out of the cockpit if you're already in it. It might seem a small superfluous thing but I just think it would be a cool, fun little touch that would add to the immersion.
  21. Thanks guys, I appreciate the suggestions, I'm always willing to try something new to get it to work. I've tried starting setup from scratch, reinstalling the software, rolling back graphics drivers, updating drivers, etc. etc. The fact that I'm getting exactly the same setup errors on 4 different PCs that I've tried leads me to believe it's either the headset or the cable is faulty. I think the only option left is to wait for the new cable to arrive from HP and if that doesn't work to send the headset back for testing. I should know for certain then. But I've a feeling I'm in for a long wait and will have to be patient. The next latest and greatest headset will probably be out by the time I get to the bottom of it!
  22. It's not mate, at least not in my case. I already knew about the reports of the sound volume and tried it. It didn't work. Now the headset won't connect at all to even be able to try adjusting the volume anyway.
  23. Yes, I've tried every USB combination I can think of. I've unplugged all other USB devices and tried every USB port including Type-C. The latest update is I've tested it on my PC, my friend's new Digital Storm PC, my work PC and my work laptop, which happens to be a Dell G5 gaming laptop, all of them report USB errors and won't get past the WMR setup. So after trying it on 4 separate computers, all with different motherboards, processors, GPUs etc., all reporting USB errors, I can't see how it can be a problem with my PC, it must be headset related. I've reported this to HP and they're sending me a new cable for me to try. Fingers crossed that will fix it...
  24. I collected my headset from my friend and tested it on my work PC too. Same thing with that, it won't get past the initial WMR setup, it keeps reporting USB errors. I'm now starting to think it's a cable problem.
