  1. Yes. I hadn't flown the Hercules in a while so I downloaded the latest version to try but it crashes as soon as I try starting a ready for takeoff on the runway mission. I haven't tried any other mission types.
  2. I recently upgraded my CPU (I kept the same GPU) and on instant action missions with a lot of AI units, I went from FPS that was often in the teens and running like a slide show to a smooth and very playable 40+ FPS, so it was a big improvement for me. But I imagine any improvement you might see will depend on how big an upgrade you're making. I went from a relatively ancient i7-3770 to an i5-11600K.
  3. Thanks for the reply. Is that a Yes, you do need SteamVR running? Is there an alternative then that doesn't need it?
  4. Do you have to have SteamVR for WMR running to us FPSVR? I don't have it so I'm not familiar with it. It would be interesting to see a CPU and GPU comparison between AirLink and the cable Link, to see which taxes the system the most, but I don't really also want to have SteamVR also running in the background. Surely that would impact the results. Is there an alternative to FPSVR that can be used with the Quest without needing SteamVR, (that's assuming it does need SteamVR)?
  5. Yes, with hindsight, an i5-11400 is probably the CPU I should have bought rather than the 11600K. The 11400 draws a lot less power and runs cooler for barely any noticeable difference in FPS so it's even better value. There's a good comparison video here. This guys thinks overclocking CPUs is dead.
  6. Me too. It's responding to my TWS throttle but not the axis input from my VKB stick.
  7. Yes, I've heard it does have a higher power consumption but still, the performance is undeniably good. I've seen it tested well for performance on some youtube channels too. It certainly works for me anyway, I'm happy with it.
  8. Have you considered an i5-11600K? It's cheaper and appears to outperform the 5600X. I was considering a 5600X but was swayed towards the intel i5 after seeing this: https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Ryzen-5-5600X-vs-Intel-Core-i5-11600K/4084vs4113 And I'm glad I did. I upgraded to the i5-11600K from a relatively ancient i7-3770 which was severely bottlenecking my system on missions with lots of AI. After the upgrade I went from a slide show to nicely smooth and playable. I also upgraded my motherboard and RAM I might add (I had to, for the new CPU socket), which also helped, but I'm pretty sure most of the bottlenecking was caused by the old CPU as I retained the same GPU. I think the i5-11600K seems a really good choice at the moment for price/performance. Edit: Having said that, your 9600K is a lot better than my i7-3770 so you might not see as much improvement as I did.
  9. Yes, I sussed it. I used to have it as left ctrl pause. Thanks.
  10. Ah, it must be for 6000 series cards only. My software is up to date but I don't have those options. I only have a RX 5700 XT.
  11. Very nice. I like the socket propping the GPU up! How do you enable RAGE MODE? I have Tuning Control set to automatic and Auto Tuning set to GPU Overclocked. Do you need Tuning Control set to Manual to be able to enable Rage Mode?
  12. Yep, my bad, it does indeed work in game, no need to Alt+Tab in and out. I'm pretty sure it never used to though, maybe it changed in an update, I hadn't tried doing it in game in ages. But ASW off definitely works best and plays more smoothly for me. As, I've mentioned previously, trying the F3 fly by, with ASW on, the plane ghosts, with ASW off, it flies by smoothly with no ghosting. But perhaps what you see is just dependent on your system. I can't get the FPS counter up in the corner of the screen now though since they changed the UI overlay in the latest OB update. Is there a way to get it back in the settings?
  13. Thanks for the suggestions guys. I managed to fix it and get my original Windows SSD to boot without having to re-install Windows. It turns out the SATA mode in the BIOS was set to RAID instead of AHCI and somewhere else buried in the BIOS the first boot device was set to Other OS, instead of Windows UEFI for some reason. Changing those to AHCI and Windows UEFI fixed it. My Windows booted up and no need to re-install.
  14. I've been running DCS on an old Dell XPS8500 17-3770 workstation that I upgraded from Windows 8 to 10, transferred to a Samsung 1TB SSD, added 32GB DDR3 RAM and an AMD 5700XT GPU, but now I've just built a new PC and wanted to move my existing SSD to the new build. The problem is the new PC won't boot into Windows. I get a Windows stop blue screen and a no boot device error. The Windows license is Retail so I was hoping it would boot on the new system and I would just have to reactivate it by logging into my Microsoft account. (I believe when you do the free upgrade to Windows 10 the original product key is replaced by a software license linked to your Microsoft account - which I did.) I've gone into the command prompt and tried to list the drive but that says no drive found. I've tried diskpart and tried a few commands I found online but none of them work because it doesn't even see a disk. The BIOS is set to default and I can see the drives listed in the BIOS. If I plug the SSD back into the old PC it boots up fine and I can log into the desktop, so the disk or Windows installation isn't corrupted or anything. I even tried a new install of Windows using a Windows USB install utility. The BIOS detects the USB and automatically boots the installer but the installer also comes up with the error, no drive found, install driver and won't go any further. I'm trying this on a second WD 500GB SSD that I formatted in Windows so it's empty but it doesn't see that either. I don't want to try the installer over my SSD that has my Windows 10 on it because it also has my DCS install on it and I don't want to have to reinstall it all. (Another reason with hindsight to have your games and OS on separate drives). So any suggestions how to get my new PC to boot my existing Windows 10 SSD or how to get the installer to see the empty SSD would be greatly appreciated. My new build specs: i5-11600K ASUS TUF Gaming Z590-Plus WiFi 32GB DDR4 RAM AMD 5700XT GPU Samsung 1TB SSD (Windows 10 & DCS install) WD 500GB SSD (Empty) Thanks.
  15. Hostile Skies - The Battle for the Falklands by David Morgan, another Sea Harrier pilot, is also a really good read.
  16. Yes, I was going to say, I think I saw on a review somewhere, you just have to try a few restarts until it shows. I wonder if that might be your issue. I just watched a video my Virtual Reality Oasis and according to him it's recommended that your PC is connected to your router via an ethernet cable, which is just coincidently how I have mine set up. Just by a fluke I switched to an ethernet cable just a day before getting the AirLink update because my PC wireless wasn't reliable.
  17. I got the update yesterday and tried AirLink for the first time last night. I was really impressed. Apart from an occasional momentary loss of sound, for a split second, sometimes when I turned my head, I didn't notice any performance difference to using the Link cable, no lag or fps drop. It was really refreshing to not feel the cable rubbing on the side of my ear or catching on the back of the chair, it felt very liberating and added to the immersion even more. I'm guessing the sound issue will be something to do with my connection or slightly creaky system not quite keeping up at times, but apart from that it's really impressive stuff and I'll actually be slightly sad to go back to cable when I get my G2 back! I might even have to get the bigger battery pack to extend my flight time!
  18. I fly in VR too and it's absolutely brilliant for spatial awareness for hovering and landing. (It still doesn't mean I'm any good at it though!)
  19. I'm glad it worked for you. I think DCS can still run and look pretty good in VR with those settings. To enable or disable ASW just Alt+Tab from your DCS game window to your Oculus software window, press ctrl+keypad1 to disable ASW, then simply Alt+Tab back to your DCS Window. That's it, you don't need any other software. A simple way to check whether it's disabled or not is to press F3 and watch the fly-by view. If the plane flies past the camera smoothly without any stuttering or ghosting then you have ASW disabled. At least that's how it works on my system. It may still stutter a bit if you're in a mission with lots of AI units so it's best to check it in a simple instant action mission, something like a free flight with only you flying around.
  20. Well that's some Twilight Zone stuff! It definitely wasn't working for me yesterday and I had civilian traffic off - I always have it turned off, but I've tried it both on Caucasus and the Channel map tonight and it's working!
  21. I would try to keep it as simple as possible. So DCS standalone and the link cable. And without the overheads of any other software running. That means don't bother with OTT debug tool or anything like that. I just use the keyboard shortcut: ctrl-Keypad1 to disable ASW. ctrl-keypad1 ASW Disabled. ctrl-keypad2 Force 45 fps no ASW. ctrl-keypad3 Force 45 fps with ASW. ctrl-keypad4 Enabled ASW auto. In your Oculus link cable settings just have it set to default 72Hz and 3712 X 1872 or try 90Hz and 3712 x 1872 and check if you lose any FPS at 90Hz. I use 90Hz and 3712 x 1872. I have ran 90Hz and turned the slider up to 5408 x 2736 in the past but surprisingly I haven't noticed much difference in clarity at the lower 3712 x 1872 but I get much better FPS. Just make sure in DCS settings you have MSA x2. It does take a performance hit but it looks horrible and jagged without it. You will have to turn some other DCS settings down to compensate. I like to keep Textures on high but set Terrain texture set to low and shadows to flat, I keep my cockpit at 1024, SSAA off, SSLR off, SSAO off, Anisotropic filtering x16 ( I don't think it has a big performance hit but you can try it lower). Forest Visibility/Forest Details Factor/Scenery Details Factor/Preload Radius - turn them down. I have mine all set you around 75% of the slider but experiment what works for you, try lower or higher. Basically, run your Quest 2 at default 72Hz (try 90Hz) and 3712 x 1872, and as many settings turned down in DCS as you can bear. But try and keep MSAA on, cockpit on 1024, Textures on High and ASW off. Edit: I would add also, in DCS VR settings keep PD at 1.0. Anything lower looks horrible and anything higher kills performance. And set Gamma to 2.2, which I believe is the default. I used to think this was too bright but once you're used to it it can greatly enhance the visibility and readability of some of the switches and instruments, especially in the darker cockpits, like the M2000.
  22. Yes, you're absolutely right of course. I was just being a bit flippant. What I meant was, If I'd only realised how well positioned and how near to the ground I was, I could have just lowered my collective and been down. You live and learn.
  23. Civilian traffic was turned off in my test. That's strange! I'll have to try my test again tonight.
  24. I use: ctrl-keypad1 to disable ASW. Here are all the keyboard shortcuts: ctrl-keypad1 ASW Disabled. ctrl-keypad2 Force 45 fps no ASW. ctrl-keypad3 Force 45 fps with ASW. ctrl-keypad4 Enabled ASW auto. You have to Alt+Tab to the Oculus software window before you do it though, then Alt+Tab back to DCS, otherwise it won't take effect. I definitely find it runs with less to no stutters for me with ASW disabled. An easy way to check is to go to F3 view. If your plane flies past smoothly then you have ASW disabled. If you see stutters or ghosting as it flies past then ASW is not disabled. At least that's how I can tell on my system.
  25. Oh dear, did I really? Don't blame me for your VR woes! Just kidding! I don't know about the bitrate, I don't use the debug tool or anything like that. I just use the standard Oculus software, plug it into the standard USB 3.0 on the motherboard, enable link and let it do it's own thing and I get what I get. I believe some people get much higher bitrates but I'm running on a fairly antiquated motherboard and CPU (an old Dell XPS ex work workstation that I threw a few new bits at). My Windows 10 is not even using UEFI mode. I'm currently waiting on some new bits I've ordered to upgrade. Just FYI, my current spec: Intel i7-3770 CPU AMD RX 5700-XT 32GB DDR3 RAM Dell OYJPT1 motherboard I've ordered: i5-11600K Asus Z590 mb with wifi and 32GB DDR4 3600Mz RAM A new GPU would be nice but try and find one!
