  1. Agreed, and well said. I continue to encourage people to read the manual because subsystem familiarization is the logical first step in learning any aircraft. It saddens me to see people skip this step and try to work backward from procedure to system. I imagine that a lot of the enjoyment and wonder are lost. The math analogy is a good one; working from procedure to system is like memorizing calculus theorem before you understand continuous function or basic mathematics. My persistence may be a residual effect of my 'data crusade' in my work. I'm a Business Intelligence Architect and I panic when I see a company focus on indicators without cleansing and governing the data behind them. I guess as far as hang-ups go, it could be worse. :)
  2. I absolutely agree with everything you said P*Funk. Well said. CCIP bombing is an excellent example. Let's look at the two groups: Never read the manual - Tactics Focus People who have never read the manual will most likely not know how to use the indicators that provide proper situational awareness and make CCIP effective. The only knowledge of the subsystem they'll obtain will be passed on by the person or video teaching them CCIP. That will most likely be the procedure used under the most common circumstances, and only with minimal effectiveness. Read the manual, didn't learn practical application - Features Focus Understands the indicators and theory behind the subsystem, but doesn't understand employment or procedures. Information is consumed but becomes stale without practical application. So what if these two people both meet up with someone that has knowledge of proper CCIP procedure; Manual Reader will already know the subsystems and after review of procedure will realize how the pieces fit and may fully apply all functions and utilize the subsystem to it's full potential. The non-reader on the other hand, will have to receive subsystem familiarization at the same time they're learning application. The pieces still don't fit and this person disregards half of what they learn since it has no context. For this reason I think that my chances of fully utilizing a subsystem as a manual reader are much better than those of a non-manual reader.
  3. It's not a limitation, it's by design. The A-10 manual reads like a tech manual. It's not an help file... and I'm really glad of that. As someone who read similar manuals in the military, I can tell you that they did a great job with this one. It shows you the functions of each subsystem, then you go translate the functions into practical use by using them (or watching vids or running through the training scenarios). It's primarily for subsystem familiarization, not procedural instruction. The problem with just using second hand information and not the manual is that you may skip over many features of a subsystem simply because it's not used in common tasks. The manual gives me a deeper understanding of the bird, which in turn allows me to take full advantage of the complexity and awesomeness of this sim. For this reason my sorties contain no hesitation, only devastation.
  4. Yeah, VAC uses Windows Voice Recognition, but it gives you a friendly interface and the ability to time and chain your commands, and a whole lot more. You should check it out.. it's super inexpensive and bug free. Plus you can use prebuilt profiles, like the one I posted above. Supporting innovative independent developers is a good thing.
  5. @Gypsy: As someone who consumed the NATOPS manual in the Navy (yes, mentally not physically :) ) I agree that ED did a great job on the A-10C manual. - Read01 was a skim through to get a reference for more questions and to know where to look as I'm doing the practical learning of each subsystem. - Read02 was after basic subsystem familiarization.. 'oh I see! that's how those pieces fit'. - Read03+ were all 'yum yum.. yum yum yum.. someone pass the potatoes'.

  7. Didn't they find that integrated Pilot/WSO in the KA-50 was beyond the reasonable limits of human situational awareness and replace it entirely with the KA-52 two seater? I believe I also read that they found an added benefit in that the KA-52 was able to replace other birds as well, as a superior AFAC platform.
  8. Why would you want to learn something so complex as the A-10 by asking various folks in MP? Why not take personal responsibility for your own training and read the awesome manual that ED provides? You can then make the pieces fit through forums, vids, and collaboration with a squadron... Why is everyone so afraid of the manual? I like it so much that I have Microsoft Mike read it in my office all day.. it's killer ambient tech noise.

  10. Tell me how it goes. The easier option really is *slew the desired view and zoom *hit Ralt+0 *hit F1 I haven't tested this in years, so there me be addition steps.
  11. It could be an errant light source effecting TrackIR as aceviper said. It could also be that you accidentally saved a new snap view for default view. From a previous post concerning custom snap views: Two other options are: 1. Uncheck "Enable User Snap-View Saving" in options 2. Delete C:\Users\>YOUR USERNAME<\Saved Games\DCS\Config\View\SnapViews.lua
  12. I've spent a lot of time spanning AI activation out so there's no impact to the client. PROBLEM: With 'Late Activation' of more than 3 AI simultaneously, the client app freezes while the activated AI perform targeting and similar actions all at once. SOLUTION: Provide an Late Activation Queue - If I activate 10 AI simultaneously, each AI unit (not group) is added to an activation queue that allows each one to perform targeting, etc before the next as they activate. This will result in them activating one at a time very quickly, in series rather than in parallel.

  15. Thanks for all of the positive comments! This mission refreshes my skills if I haven't done a lot of gun work in a while. Any other suggestions for enhancements? If you want a similar mission that incorporates more weapon and target types, check out my mission Live Fire Exercise. It's CO8 or SP and also contains a lot of voice overs and dynamic content.

  17. Also, don't forget that you can create a mark with only the TAD cursor. There have been a lot of cases where I see AA smoke trail origin, but I have to terrain mask to evade so I don't have time to slew TGP with eyes on. In these cases I'll duck behind some terrain and set a mark for the general area of the target using my TAD. I'll then slave my sensors to the mark and come out of mask with my TGP close enough that I can lock it in pretty quickly. This gives me safe popup options I wouldn't otherwise have.   21. I use ground power under the same circumstances. Sure makes for a quicker turnaround during refuel/rearm. My startup begins with: - Request Ground Power - Radio Power - Ejection Seat Arm - Lights - CDU and EGI power to get alignment started There used to be a bug where if you didn't request ground power disconnect, it was persistent in the air if your engines went out. Not sure if this still exists as I always ask for disconnect.. the crewchief yelling at me always makes me cringe heheh. It would be a riot if when you forgot to ask for disconnect you could hear the GPU (or cable if it breaks) banging up against the side of the aircraft during takeoff. Better yet, have the Crew Chief (model Snoopy in?) riding it like a bull (like Tex riding the nuke in Dr. Strangelove) shaking his fist and silently but emphatically cussing you.
  22. If I'm going to spot targets with MK1eyeball I like to slow it down and get at a reasonably low altitude. If I'm unsure if there's a threat I like to get a good standoff distance (10-20nm), then set my ALT autopilot with a few degrees right wing to get me in an orbit. I'll then use CTRL+KPD0,6 to freeze on my right MFCD and take my time spotting. If I spot the target and the situation is right, I find the quickest way to set sensors on it is to engage it with guns/ordinance to set my ZMark (auto mark every time you fire at something) then switch to mark and slave all to it. Your mark will change every time you engage so you'll be reslewed to the last target you fired upon. Here's a previous posts on the matter:
  23. You're welcome Gorilla. I'm flattered that my mission was the first thing to compel you to post in the year you've been on the forums. I did give this mission a lot of attention to detail, but I have to admit that this one isn't that complex. I'd encourage anyone who uses DCS to dive into the editor. ED really did an excellent job in making the editor flexible and easy to use. It's the real power of this simulator. We don't have a 'dynamic campaign' yet, per say, but we have something much more powerful; the ability to create a mission/campaign that is static to our imagination, but dynamic in execution. I'll soon be launching a campaign that I've been working on for nearly five years. I've thought of making this mission the first in the campaign to simulate pre-deployment exercises.
  24. Your advice is usually spot on Snoopy. I'm out of town on bidness right now, but when I get home I'll try it without throttling back. My reservations are that the speed will increase to the point that the mav head won't be as stable and that I'll close with the target too quickly to get all missiles off. I'll report back with my findings.
  25. Read the entire method.. I can attest that it works extremely well. You're nose down at high altitude far from the target to get missile aspect and stabilize, so you shouldn't slow down much if at all. There are a lot of 'absolutely never' things to remember about flying the hawg, but I'm not sure 'never throttle down' is one of them. After all, one of the requirements for the design of this bird was that it could fly slow.. so I use that advantage when necessary.. but not in this case. This method has never caused me an issue from lacking energy or speed... It doesn't slow you down to that degree... it simply prevents you from gaining so much speed that you lose missile head stability or close with the target too quickly. Give it a try and see.
