If the answer to the question "Are you running the saitek profiler app in the system tray" is yes, then edit your (saitek software) profile and remove the 3 columns from it that include the pinkie as the shift state that makes it use the values from that column. I put images showing the before/after differences with the profile and what you're trying to achieve in a couple of other threads like this one if you want to see it: http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=976173&postcount=22

It has been posted (though I won't know for myself for a week or so) that the extents are octagonal anyway, so the square you're seeing may even be somewhat aesthetical (sp?) rather than functional for providing the extents. Whilst that alone doesn't prevent angle differences when it's twisted by amounts other than 45 degrees at a time, it does suggest that the input range is probably more circular than the external appearance suggests. Really going to need some direct hands-on with the thing. Pictures can be so deceiving.

You may wish to try leaving it for a long time, I would not be surprised for it to be 15-30 mins in extreme cases. Is it fair to assume you have been killing the process before this, under the expectation it is just hanging? It seems the installers being used are not quite used to the packing/unpacking of such large application bases, and fail to give good feedback during this initialization time. I think it was also the case for either the FC2 or another stage in the 1.0.2 BS patch where a 'Next' button appeared to lockup and do nothing for minutes at a time -- same reason -- but it does eventually get going. If you're able to check that the MD5 hash (visible beside the patch download links on DCS websites) on your own locally downloaded files are the same values, you can be quite sure the integrity of the file you're trying to install from is intact (it is a far more accurate method than, say, comparing the file byte size is correct). Microsoft have an MD5 tool for download if you search their site, and don't have an alternative. It's worth just checking that off as a potential problem, as well as giving the patcher an unusually long time to initialize.

Hi Hower, have been a bit busy myself lately and these forums are a timesink (i.e. very active, many posts/threads,) so I had to curfew myself :) I'm using Vista 32-bit, but my physical memory isn't being saturated here so paging and/or being out of physical memory isn't causing it. The overheads of newer OS versions than XP are indeed higher though, and that is normal / to be expected. As I've shown, I can make the game use more memory and still run fine (1500-1600MB) than what it is trying to use at the times it crashes - it is hundreds of megabytes difference, or hundreds of MB left of room to play in, between the game sessions and yet it can still CTD. Tez asked me if I could provide a track file of the crashing (and to see if from that, a replayable scenario causing the crash at the same place and time can be created), but I haven't been able to expend much energy on doing this. For one thing, when it crashes to desktop, you don't get a track file - it cannot compile (zip) the necessary files into a complete .trk file, and my attempts to cobble one together with the remnants of the /temp directory have not been successful either.

Whilst I have much appreciation for the lmgtfy service, the irony of showing someone they should be using google to 'find' a complete URL you already know in advance, is just on its own level of 'special' ;)

Why not update the Direct X axis limit?
topdog replied to WarriorX's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
DirectInput8 is the latest incarnation, so there haven't been any changes of significance in the API for many years. Its only successor is XInput (part of all the other Xcrap that was done to try and homogenize (or bastardize, take your pick,) PC and XBox development), and that actually has half the axis available because Microsoft only really catered the new API around their own XBox controller (don't ask why). But this is only 'per controller' limits? So what's the real problem anyway? Anything (software) supporting such a wide range of inputs should be supporting multiple controllers at once, and any device bold enough to carry so many at once should be able to present itself to the PC as multiple (virtualized) controllers to map out the workload. Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectInput -
I put in my amazon pre-order earlier this month (right after Coolts, Viper's, and CrashEd's unsuccessful attempt to budge amazon.co.uk). Noticed a few days ago they have actually buckled into dropping the price by 10 quid (though I'm not really paying for mine anyway - beaucoup gift vouchers). Just waiting for next weekend now when they should be rolling out of their dispatch warehouses. As for why other retailers in the UK (except a small shop) haven't fanfared the arrival with pre-orders.. I don't know about you, but ever since I left indepdent PC retail 15 years ago it has all been pretty low-key. You'll find some stockists (or at that price, bought-to-order) sellers without any real difficulty, but if they don't big-up the launch that is just going to be fairly normal in my experience. Some may get their hands on them and then announce 'just in!' bulletins, but rare for pre-launch buzz. Still undecided what I'm going to do about pedals, probably the current saitek offering (simpeds are a bit pricey, new saitek combat pedals are only vaporware for the forseeable time, owned some CH Pro peds about 20 years ago and they're ok but violent nad crushing I can do without).

NVIDIA 258.96 drivers watchout...
topdog replied to Pilotasso's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
The worst issue was at the start of this year (around Dec-Feb) and an Nvidia driver release was somehow inverting the fan and as the card got hotter, the fan would cease. First noted by Starcraft 2 beta testers who were blaming Blizzard for toasting their graphics cards (the cards became unusably damaged), but turned out to the be driver. Anyhow, you say here that "all the NVIDIA cards with the whql'ed 258.96 drivers and up are going to have fan issues." - do you have a reference for this? -
A sort of hog related question - when the real stick is being used and it is mounted at a twisted angle, is it just the top part of the stick that is twisted for a more comfortable grip, or are the axis of the controls twisted too? I'm fairly certain it's just the stick top that's twisted and not the axis of the controls themselves, but might as well make sure. Also does the stick allow for this configuration to be made without having to do some DIY (even if it's just to put a spacer between the stick and base) as it appears to have the stick pictured being mounted 'straight'? I've tried using a center mounted stick before that wasn't twisted and it was uncomfortable.

NVIDIA 258.96 drivers watchout...
topdog replied to Pilotasso's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Been running those drivers 24x7 for 2 months on a 3 yr old 8800 GTX without issue; but this card wasn't infamous for it's heat/noise like some others so maybe that would influence whether the card might be tipped over the edge or not. I don't use any tweak tools to OC the card either (though, if I vaguely recall, mine's an 'out of the box OC model' from the vendor). Vista 32-bit here though, so perhaps not identical software code either, even if the version numbers are the same. -
Performance Improvement for Nvidia Multi-GPU
topdog replied to TAIPAN_'s topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Blackshark starts up from launcher.exe and then goes into simulator.exe; I believe since the 1.0.2 compatibility patch for fc2. dcs.exe is relegated to a backup folder. -
ramp-start, Take-Off and Landing Challenge
topdog replied to 159th_Viper's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Technically it won't be my first flight anymore since I already did that one; but it was in the spirit of your original challenge, in a slightly demented way :) http://files.operationgamma.com/the_challenge.trk (5.6 MB) Skip the first 55 mins though.. it literally took me that long to fumble through the controls to get the engines and bare systems rolling.. I was surprised once I got here that there wasn't already a rookie/challenge thread, I'll give this new mission a go too when I get home from work later, see how much of an arse I can make of myself in that one. Thanks :D -
You hit someone with the A10 and it's going to be a headshot, legshot, armshot, torsoshot, all in one.

Cannot register new account at digitalcombatsimulator.com
topdog replied to topdog's topic in Forum and Site Issues
Ok, confirmed that works for me: "You are registered and logged in on the site." Thanks a lot guys. -
Any chance your DCS account goes by another name? I see a lot of new registered forum accounts in the last hour, many of them with similar names to regular members of the forum. If it is, you could try logging in with that username/password instead (if you haven't tried it already).

Cannot register new account at digitalcombatsimulator.com
topdog replied to topdog's topic in Forum and Site Issues
Thanks for trying Panzer. -
I've only ever used both together; avsynth is a scripting language that generates its output as a fake audio/video stream, that virtual dub captures and does any further processing on as needed. It's not a friendly tool by any means, but being a script you can do almost anything with it, you're not stuck with some stock fades/wipes/titles. http://avisynth.org/mediawiki/Main_Page The doom9 guys are where I was able to salvage most help and tips from, what they've forgotten is probably more than I'll ever know: http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=33

Cannot register new account at digitalcombatsimulator.com

power5 is getting the same problem also, in case he isn't getting around to posting in this forum about it yet: http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=990007&postcount=29 -
Ok, thanks and done: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=58302 Folks who can login fine etc., the problem is with registration not with login or any other navigation on the site. I'm pretty surprised I haven't registered before but the tactical map and fc2 were through another website (lockonfiles?), and my original lockon and dcs:bs are store-bought DVDs.

Hi, I'm posting about my problem experienced trying to register a new account at www.digitalcombatsimulator.com so I can purchase the DCS:A10C pre-order. The website displays fine and I can navigate up until the point I try to register for an account; I have a lockonfiles and forums account but seems I bought blackshark in a store so never registered at the DCS site. Anyhow.. registration form appears, I fill everything in dutifully including the captcha, I press on Submit, and the response that comes back is just a white empty page (no error). If I deliberately enter a bad captcha, it goes back to the registration form and asks me to fill it in again, so I know that validation seems to be working OK and the details I submit when I get the white screen should be correct. I've tried with both IE8 (in compatibility mode, and normal) and Firefox 3.3.something, and get the same thing. I also tried using a deliberately cranky/random username, in case it was just tripping over someone else having the same username, but that made no difference either. The email address I'm using is valid, and the password I was using was 6 characters long minimum. Since the site just recently got rebounced to host the pre-order I'm unsure if it's just overloaded or if something got broken in the process, but until this is fixed I'm unable to send you $$$ ! Thanks :) -topdog

Working to register a new account, or working to just visit and login/buy? I'm trying to do the former. I've tried 2 different browsers.
-
Website might be a little cranky or overloaded, but attempting to register is just coming back with a blank page (unless you do something wrong like enter the captcha incorrectly, then it comes back and tells you to do it again). How's it fairing on your side?
-
Ok, I have experience with virtualdub and avisynth so I'll go with those too, thanks.
-
For that we use the patented Avatar take-down manouver. We leap out the cockpit after merging, run across the surface of the A10, drop the nades into the engines, then leap off the back and into the camel's seat again. (Well, since we're in fantasy land, nobody stipulated there had to be limits!)
-
Hi Bucic, So do you still use this method in 1.0.2? If you do, have you had to make any changes to the options you pick (to re-force the use of certain codecs, or to settle with the provided ones)?
