What in your oppinion, makes a good online LOCKON pilot?

A) One who scores lots of online kills, but has zero skill in formation flying/landing/comms

B) One who scores solid ammount of kills (say, 1:1 kill/death ratio), but can fly/land in formation and knows the brevity code (ie. is a teamplayer)

A good online pilot? Uhm, one who is successful in an online environment under just about any circumstances without resorting to cheating? ;)

For me the most important is to have fun and to make the other people in the session feel the same way. Having fun with someone you don't know is not an easy task, i.e. things like respect, sportmanship and patience are essential. Unfortunately(from my online experience so far) this is a minor group at least in the HL. Most people get it too personal and seriously. I do mostly guns only and formation and there aren't too much fellows in the Lobby. Almost all servers are BVR or A2G.

for me it's the most important thing to know the systems of my plane, a good pilot should know how to do this and how to do that.

A Pilot who goes Rambo-Style and blasts everything but doesn't even know how to read the System Gauges is imho no good pilot

A good pilot knows his plane well. A great pilot knows his team well. A guru knows everything well. ;)

In relation to the post, I've been a little hesitant to join an online game, because I'm not sure how the games are setup. Should I just join and ask questions(I'm sure that would be annoying to the other players), or is there a good thread to learn the in's and outs of LOFC multiplayer? Is it usually red vs blue or are there specific missions.....? That kind of stuff.

Cheers!

people who dont VULCH !!!!! my pet peave of the year.

i dont play on HL because of vulching as i find spending 2 hours of my sparetime being blown up on finals, takeoff or desperatly flee'ing for my life from the homeplate in my Su25 a little boring.

the 504 server is having all of its airfield defences upgraded to near RL status, so vulchers beware and SEAD jocks enjoy !!

Personally, i find vulching in this game absolutely cowardly. I joined in a server one day where the opposing team had taken over our field. Every time i restarted on the ramp, i was returned to the lobby due to incoming attacks. So, i hit fly a few more times to see if my opponents (there were several orbiting the field) would actually let me get airborne for a challenge. Not a chance. Instead i was greeted with, "This is the most fun i have had in LockOn" via chat window. Im thinking to myself, this guy has fun hitting targets on the ramp that cant shoot back? lol... ok... i gracefullly replied, "Thanks for the server time" and went to a server that admires gameplay, sportsmanship and challenge. But hey, people need to feel a sense of accomplishment somewhere in their lives...even if its blasting defenseless targets...

Edit: By the way, Thats good to hear about 504 server. 504 server is the best server on HL imo. Excellent sportsmanship, maturity and humor. Although, i wouldnt mind seeing shorter missions and/or longer mission times for the larger maps. Keep up the good work!

IA also has a great bunch of guys to fly with or against.... Always a good time on IA or 504... RAF amd 44th too.... 44th is under-rated imo. Great guys there to fly with. They also take the time to show you the ropes as a newbie... (Thanks again GG!)

Best frames per second and lack of lag would have to be IA Dedicated... for me... a close second would be 504, tied with RAf and 44th.

Thanks to all of you for making online play enjoyable... :)

What signifies a good online pilot?

My answer: one that can be repeatedly blown out of the sky, but still laugh and truthfully say that they've had a great time playing.

I used to like people, then people ruined that for me.

No, that just makes a good sportsman.

A good pilot has more than one quality, and he doesn't necessarily have to be a good sportsman either (but in a game, that helps)

Bring on the air defences!

Well I find vultching a very exciting experience (in my 25t). Last week we made up a real nice mission plan.. loaded up on petrol, sead stuff and my favorite vulture ammo (Vickers). It is very rewarding to sneak in, take out all the air defences and wipe out all the bastages attempting to take off/refuel/rearm... wow just like real life... well almost and then fly home or land at their base.

This is the best way, but eventually I will be there too.

This is your opinion, I find it very challenging to make it all the way in ...create total chaos and then make it home in my 25t.

Actually his opinion is at least partially correct when there's no map auto-rotation since your 'work' leaves that base entirely vulnerable to everyone else, and the server might not be reset for a long time.

Plus, the other side might not have SEAD equipment ... so while it might be fun for you, it is also utterly inconsiderate under most online server circumstances.

ESPECIALLY since you can respawn as much as you like and just attrit the defenses.

Now, if you do it in one run, kudos ...

In any case, there are two sides to this argument, and I'm right there with both of them.

Most servers typically just don't set up good enough air defenses, which is fairly understandable when you consider the time required to do so, as well as the potential performance impact.

I agree with you (especially if its done in an A-10). However, this was not my point. I have seen pilots orbit over an enemy base ater SEAD was carried out, waiting for others to join (considering the map doesnt show destroyed ground units when you join), only to be surprised with a lobby view while trying to start your engines.wondering WTF just happened. The pilots orbiting a suppressed enemy base waiting for new-comers to spawn on the ramp, only to blast them as they close their canopy... are "gaming" cowards imo. Which is lower than a real life coward.

I enjoy the 44th server because you have to hunt for SEAD. Unlike other servers where you can take a screenshot of the map (or post it on this forum ...:music_whistling: ) revealing enemy locations.

Either way, its a game that is most enjoyable playing against others. There is no point to spawn on a ramp only to be blasted as you close your canopy.

Servers say vulching is allowed because "This is War", yet you get ridiculed if you shoot down the opposition with a maddog on some servers. lol... i dont get it.... :v:

edit: Its also hilarious when some pilots throw flames because the pilot that shot him down "used too many missles". I love to respond (even if it wasnt directed at me), "Stand still next time and your opponent will only use one missle."....... silence on the freq.... ;)

It's no fun if it isn't a challenge...air defenses are in most servers I fly in, but even if there were none it's next to impossible to get close enough in a 25 (having no radar), half the time I get shot down by even the most green pilot with any kind of BVR skills before I even reach their base, give it a try in a 25t... can you say sitting duck? er... flying duck?
