RED ALERT

The new spyware program from M$ and the new IE 7 requires service pack 2 .

What is this going to do to our LOMAC INSTALLS?

Remember this ? I hope we get down to some solid answers about this issue below people have been talking about and what the new patch does to fix it.

Someone in the UBI forums wrote ???????????

Last of course what happens with sp2? HELP!!!!:(

FROM UBI FORUMS

I think I found the ultimate solution to the campaign/msvcrt.dll/instability problem on windows xp sp2.

First make sure you have the msvcrt.dll that came with lomac in the lomac folder (this is for those of you who tried replacing it with other versions). Now create an empty file named "lockon.exe.local" without the quotes of course in the same folder where lockon.exe is located (C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Eagle Dynamics\Lock On).

When you start lomac you will get a couple of dialog boxes saying "The procedure entry point _resetstkoflw could not be located in the dynamic link library msvcrt.dll", just click ok and continue, go into your campaign and play it.

The explanation.

What we have here is a classic problem known as DLL HELL. Lomac comes with its own msvcrt.dll but due to the way it loads dlls, it ends up always loading the one in the /system32 folder which is buggy (it loads ntdll.dll which loads other dlls which load the wrong msvcrt.dll).

The trick to force windows to load the msvcrt.dll in the lomac folder was to create a file with a .local extension, as in lockon.exe.local, which forces windows to load the right dll.

I just tested the su25 campaign which worked for me and it flew it without errors for the first time ever. I would like to know how it works out for other sp2 users.

I have Windows XP SP2, and I don't need to do any of these tricks to play campaigns.

I run Serivce Pack 2 as well and I have no problems with Lomac FC

I'm staying away from IE beta 7 or any version of IE for that matter. Firefox 1.5.01 served me well so far. I have service pack 2 also. Don’t have dll's issues with it with FC so far. Reckon you might have registry corruption or your dll's files are not associated correctly to its source applications. Troubleshooting this might require more time then re installing your windows IMHO. But to each is own.

I always love a good challenge.

right service pack 2 is just more bloated security from M$.

EDIT:

I just went and checked on problems people are having and some solution service pack 2 solves. Actually it seems M$ has abandoned XP non service pack 2 OS support ( unofficial :) ). There actually are some serious OS problems that one may or may not experience without sp2. Soooooooooooooooo After 3 months on sp1 I just finally upgraded. Its unfortunate that even we as the rulers of this planet patronize a company that is 40 billion in the black and still suffer an erratic computer!!!!!!!!!! :)

sp2 is a must in my eyes, sp1 is outdated and is full of security flaws that sp2 patches up.

it has never once caused me nor anyone i know any problems, its just scaremongering, similar to SF kills cd drives.

sp2 is a must for anyone who is using windows xp and is connetced to the web...

Hey there,

I am runnning SP2 and am having huge difficulties with the game. Most missions it will crash when I am in the flare or approaching the runway environment.... or maybe make two missions and then ........ anyway. As far as making this "empty file", how exactly are you doing this... I dont have many options when I am creating this and have created a "txt" file from notebook but dont think it is working.

Sorry for my ignorance.

Cheers

how can you tell that sp2 is causing the problems that lockon has ?

I would think that it was something else other than sp2...

how long has it been causing you problems ?

when did you install sp2 ?

have you tried changing/updating new drivers ?

uninstall lockon then reinstall after you have deleted everything to do with lockon like old folders that werent removed by the uninstall .

do a windows updates and see if there is any updates for your pc .

have you made sure there isnt a hardware problem .

make sure you have dx version 9c. ( I dont think it should matter what version of DirectX you have, as long as its higher than ver 8.1 i think it is, very very unlikley that its this thats causing the problem.)

defragment harddrive.

You probably already know all of them, but I would try them before thinking that sp2 was the problem that was makeing lockon crash on you, but I hope you get it sorted as I hate having lockon problems that take ages to track down what the cause was thus pissing you off big in the meantime

No problems with SP2 and Lockon here!

SP2 adds a lot of security features that are not included in single patches. Those features, like firewall, are no silver bullets, they just *help* non-professional users to keep their systems running amidst the jungle which is the Internet... but if you open virus.exe you get "pwn3d" no matter which security features you're using!

AFAIK MS supports its OS's, but they require their users to update with the latest patches... if you have an original/authentic OS this process is fully automated so it doesn't need user input.

Just a quick note: I've heard that SP3 is being prepared for the next months (maybe next year) so active support to XP will continue even with Vista out.

BTW, are you sure your problems are with XP SP2 and not with drivers, for example... or maybe some other faulty programs?

No problems with SP2 and lock-on FC here. I recommend Win XP SP2 to everyone.

I saw what can happen to unprotected online computers. And it just did take some 3-4 hours of beeing online. In fact it happened while I downloaded SP2 without a firewall etc.... Bad idea!

Personally I know all of this as I work at an office systems dealer for many years now. This post was started as a note of these observations but more importantly in responce to some users who claim to be in dll hell with service pack two. Since its now obvious to me that service pack 2 isnt screwing with Lock on i decided to use it.

I can live with out M$ spyware program and firewall. Actually im very comfortable with Sygate professional firewall, the rest is indeed for the sheep .

Yes xp wll be supported, windows 98 hot fix ends in march. Im sure XP will get some attention BUT I think its really cheep and petty of M$ to cut off support for simple users of XP that have olders boxs that may not even be able to load XP sp2 . WE can all sit back with our 1 k - 2k $$$$ comps and work any software but there are alot of computers out there with old bios in them that do not support sp2. So service pack two isnt all that and a bag of chips for alot of people in alot of ways. My main gripe I have is the stupid automatic updates. Soon im going to look into killing the notification i get for it being shut down.

I have switched back and forth between SP1 and SP2 ever since I have had the original LOMAC installed. Shortly after the recent FC 1.12 patch, I applied SP2 again...it still works...no crashes. :D I'm running the DL version of FC.
