Amazing how dirty these Su-27s appear. Do they not park them in hangars? Always appreciate a rugged look, but curious as to why they let them look so shabby. :)

Many aircraft normally look like that when there is no cameras around. If we had V.I.P. visiting, photographers or if one of the bosses was flying with our squadron (USAF) we would have several guys cleaning the aircraft if it was not wash the day prior. Getting "dirty" like that it's not a matter of keeping it in a hangar, it just happens from the mixture of brake dust, rubber from the tires and dirt mixing with fluid that normally and randomly leak from different systems. Every aircraft has it's problems areas that tend to get dirtier quicker. Different pain jobs also add to the difficulty or ease of cleaning. JFS door on a F-16, landing gear, around the bottoms drains in F-117, etc.

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.

Look at this F-16. Block 50 (USAF) have a paint that stains very easy and is hard to clean. ( they used to anyway, not sure if they still do)

Thanks for the info.

I recently saw some images of rather dirty looking F-15s, and I guess the dark grey color makes it dirt blend in more, so it's never really obvious. The Su-27s always have these light blue and white color schemes that seem to show the dirt a lot more.

Curious as to why this Su-27 has non-Cyrillic characters on the stabilizer?

Because it's an aircraft registration and those start with RA or RF in Russia, depending on owner.

Interesting. Thank you.

EDIT: Since I am now curious -- what does this aircraft registration number mean, and what is it for? Thank you. :)

It's a license plate.

It's a license plate.

Okay, last question on this: Since I have not seen a military jet with such a registration (or license plate, thanks for the reference), does this mean this jet is no longer owned by the Russian Airforce, but instead by a private party? If it is still owned by the Russian military, what is the purpose of such "license plate"? Is that needed for international airshows, etc?

Thanks -- and excuse my ignorance on the subject. :)

All military aircraft have it.

It's so they know when/where it was made and where it's based.

Look on the AWACS in post #44

The F-15 on post #45

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

Thanks for this. Just curious that I have never seen this a) on a Russian military jet, and b) since it's Russian, in non-Cyrillic characters. Normally I am not this daft, but that particular scenario doesn't compute. :)
