SafetyTurtle Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 So I just got back into the game after not having touched it for a year and a half and last time around I didn't get very far, but now I'm back and completely motivated to get good at the A-10C. And touring the forums I've seen quite a few times now that people say you'll learn more quickly by joining a multiplayer server and play with others but, as the title says, I'm not quite sure I'm ready. It was videos on youtube like those posted by Ralfidude that really got me interested in the game, so flying with others is without a doubt something I want to do. At the moment I've gone through the startup and take off training missions and can now, more or less, start up the plane and take up without much difficulty, but I've yet to look at navigation and landing...and haven't even thought about looking at the weapon systems part. So my question is really: where do you need to be to get something out of multiplayer?...my greatest fear is joining a server and then ruining the other players fun by being a complete noob and knowing what I'm doing. I also have a slight social phobia when it comes to phones, teamspeak and the like, so may be very hesitant (sp) with asking for help and advice till I get more comfortable. Should I wait with multiplayer and go through the missions til I can at least fly, navigate and land at a fair level or what would you recommend? I'm sorry if this have been brought up before, it proberbly gets asked alot.
badger66 Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 (edited) Your ready ..... learn airfield manners ..... listen to ATC . Don't team kill and don't ask questions like how do I start this and you will do just right . We were all in the same boat at one stage and it would do well for some to remember this . Welcome to the skys Edited April 9, 2014 by badger66

IMO although people in multiplayer are usually quite helpful they may expect that you at least know the basics about the TAD, TGP and weapons. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

arkroyale048 Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 Best way is to find an online squad / clan / guild. Get Teamspeak or whatever their comm software is. They will be willing to walk you through almost anything. Just keep the questions coming and you'll be a decent attack pilot in no time. source: my personal experience. That was my first thought, I know I will want to join a squadron at some point. But my concern in this regard is that I want to find a squadron that fits me and what I wanna do and having some trouble sorting through all of them, especially since it seems some of them come and go. I was considering making a "looking for squadron" thread with a description of exactly what I'm looking for, but it seems when you do that people just refere you to the list of squadrons instead ^^
arkroyale048 Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 Oh... you don't have to be picky... Believe me, I was too.... I thought I can't join this so and so squadron because they seemed to be made up of hardcore players.... But in the end; just... oh what the heck. Just join. Things will come naturally. The one thing that makes the flight-simming community (however small and rare) better than other gaming genres like MOBA's or MMO's or FPS. Is that the community are mostly made up of nice people who won't hesitate to help another (especially a newbie) in the hopes of keeping the flight sim community alive. SafetyTurtle Posted April 12, 2014 Author Posted April 12, 2014 I won't rule out that it's my previous experience with FPS games and MMOs thats keeping me from just jumping into multiplayer, I have quite a few bad experiences in those genres sadly. May be a silly question, but any servers in particular you could recommend for newbies? it seems most of the servers are password locked. Regarding squadrons, I do have to be a bit picky as there are certan things I wanna do in the game and usually when I join squads, squadrons, clans etc I aim to spend quite a bit of time on it and stay with them for long, so wanna find the right one ^^
arkroyale048 Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 My usual server hangouts are: DCS Mercenaries for when I'm in the mood for milk runs AEF Server for freeflighting and testing For combat sorties I go to S77th (when it's public) 159th BK Server My squadron holds mandatory flights together every Saturday evenings. Usually we run a mission that was developed by some of our members during the week. If you happen to see me, my name in-game is TAW_Ark Irregular streamer: http://www.twitch.tv/arkroyale048/profile

arkroyale048 Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 ^ When I want to have an easy day on the range... DCS Mercenaries and AEF server is usually just target ranges. Things don't shoot back :) Irregular streamer: http://www.twitch.tv/arkroyale048/profile

Shahdoh Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 If you are looking for a place to just fly, the Virtual Aerobatic Public Server is a non-combat server. Every aircraft DCS offers is available to be flown plus a few mods (F-16, FA-18 and L39 - available on their website). Server is up 24/7 and has tankers to practice air to air refueling, ships and carriers to practice landings at sea and race courses.
SafetyTurtle Posted April 17, 2014 Author Posted April 17, 2014 So I ended up going to the Aerobatics server and fly around a bit, and without a doubt a better experience to just flying alone. And to make it even better I did a co-op mission with another member on this board and it was absolutely the most fun I've had in a long time, very cool to experience. I'm absolutely, 100% hooked now and the best thing is it shows you what you need to work on and get better at. Just thought I'd share that little update to the thread. ^^
Reksi-Erkki Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 It was great to fly with you. I have a lot to learn about radio comms... voice, not the sim :) Too easy to just chat away with TS3 and voice activation. Maybe we should use TARS or similar. Dear Shilka. I hate you so very very much. Love, Rex
