Sorry for offtopic, but I thought that DoW server was only for dogfighting (I have never joined it before). I am little bored with Virtual Aerobatics since I have mastered basics of flying P51, but I am rather a cannon fodder with dogfighting. I am looking for some oportunity to improve that. Do you have your own teamspeak? Will there be some good souls that could give me some advices rather than rain of bullets? :smilewink:

hey mate!

yes we do have our own teamspeak server.we have all kind of different missions, and depending on the wish of our "customers" :), we also load specific missions which suit their taste...if you see a DoW pilot on our server, and you are on the oposing side,...then dont be surprised if he will shoot you,...but i can guarantee you, that as soon as you start to talk with any of our Pilots, either via chat function, or even better on teamspeak, that every sinlge one of them will be willing to help you...

btw, our server is not only about quick and fast paced dogfighting...

we have a couple of excellent coop missions made by D0o0m, which require teamwork to succeed...

so if you are bored by virtual aerobatics, but like to fly the p51 online, and also enjoy combat environment, than we are the place to go!

you can also register on our site if you want to...just click my sig.

Hello everyone. I apologize for the delay in getting back to all of you. I have been pressed for time and have not had time to even look at my flight simulator since right after I posted my questions.

I had typed a detailed response on from my IPAD last week - only to discover that when i hit the post quick reply it told me I must be logged in ( and i was logged in.. but I must have hit a back key or something.. The Ipad and I are not frequent fliers - so it was late and i was rather disgusted with my ipad at that moment.

I wanted to briefly get back and touch base with a few things that may or may not shed some light on what may be going on.

First and foremost. I am not afraid to ask for help, but I also went looking for real world situations and found the following article that was really intuitive - if not almost textbook for what I seem to experience on landing.

http://www.snap-and-roll.com/articles/safety/item/559-some-straight-talk-on-p51-mustang-landing-safety.html

In short - I'll quote Dudley Henriques in his article: But before you read this snip.. I can only say that I really have no Idea where the ground is when I'm landing.

The more I self analyze ( after reading his article and correcting some issues suggested in the tutorial about touching down at 90 mph...) the more I realize that my visual references are just not there.

So - Is it my Graphics Card?? I can take off OK.. i don't need to dial in 6 degrees of rudder. I can go down the runway and sense when the plane has lifted off and apply more rudder correction and keep the wings level with no problem ( after realizing that it takes more rudder and aileron than one thinks!).

I have a three monitor setup with an EVGA GT 640 2GB 128bit DDR3 pci express video card.

So there is no confusion this is a GT 640 with 16 cuda cores - not at GTX 640

Is it possible that I do not have a ground reference ( or need to turn up the detail of the ground )..

Is it possible that there is a frame rate loss that I am flying into the ground before I know it? - everything seems "relatively smooth"

I've been asked to post a "video" of my "landing experience"

I'd me glad to - how do I do this. Let's say that I'm A Vietnam era vet so some things are not quite as obvious as they should be?

Maybe this sheds some light - maybe it's just me being the text book case below - i don't know. I have increased my airspeed on my approach. i can tell you that an approach in a real aircraft is a heck of a lot easier than it is on this thing... this is all over the place! and touchy as H%^L.

Thanks - I'll away some opinions and here's the article snip below.

"A bounce in a 51 is NOT a big deal, at least it shouldnʼt be a big deal. But itʼs just these bounces that have contributed to the 51 landing accidents and itʼs worth a revisit to “bounce basics” as that issue affects the Mustang.

A lot of it is simple basics really, and everyone flying a 51 knows these basics. In my opinion It isnʼt lack of knowledge thatʼs causing these accidents. Itʼs pilots getting caught by surprise on touchdown with UNANTICIPATED behavior from the aircraft followed by reaction rather than controlled response. In other words, itʼs a human factors issue not lack of knowledge causing these accidents. If we can recognize that human factors are a contributor and alter our behavior and habit patterns to accommodate this knowledge, we can decrease our accident potential considerably. Thatʼs a VERY positive step in accident prevention.

I donʼt think thereʼs a pilot out here flying a Mustang who hasnʼt been lectured time and time again on the dangers involved with power vs available control response when landing a 51. Many of you flying 51ʼs actually teach this information. The basics are quite simple really. You get a Mustang flared out into a bad bounce somewhere around CLmax and ham hand the throttle with the prop set up around 2700 and you can be in a world of hurt PDQ. How many times has everybody heard this? Itʼs Mustang 101 right? Well, yes...........but...............

if everybody knows these things, why the accidents??

Landing a Mustang as we all know should be a perfectly normal event. Thereʼs nothing supernatural about landing a P51. Itʼs a high performance airplane for sure, and if landed correctly, the result should be routine. Notice I said the RESULT should be routine. The process of landing a Mustang however should entail a prevention mind set, and by this I mean landing the aircraft in a mental state of EXPECTATION for potential landing issues. "

This is what i do, im not saying all the above is wrong, or im totally right, but this is my method:

- After take off I fly normally on 2700 pitch and 47 in.Hg

- towards the end of the downwind slow down to about 200mph using flaps and reducing throttle

- Gear down at about 190mph on finals

- Staying above 150mph and line up on final at about 500 ft looking for the furthest end of the runway as a reference

- reduce power till gliding on a nice flight path, (you will know instinctively whats too steep or shallow)

- aim to be flying at about 100mph when you cross the threshold

- slowly reduce power, maintain your nose up to glide as you go and allow power to come off, raise your nose as you feel the plane stating to come down (and picture the angle of the plane on take off - the nose is high up) , as your nose comes up you should gently ease the plane down .

Any way ive attached a track of a quick take off and landing i did, so start it up with the "Replay" button in DCS and sit back and watch it from inside and out. Hope this helps - might be a little rough, but you should get the idea.

Some good tips there and should get anyone started. But myself, I find text book landings boring. :)

Here is how you do a two pointer in a DCS P-51D, with a touch down speed about 140-150 indicated. In TF-51D you can touch down about 120-130.

...I can only say that I really have no Idea where the ground is when I'm landing...

on final when starting the flare, do not look at the runway directly anymore, but look up towards the horizon...dont focus anything, and you will get a good feel to motion of the plane in relation to the ground

...So - Is it my Graphics Card??...

i dont think that this should be a problem, as even with graphics set everything to low, you should be able to get a feel for the plane with time

...Is it possible that there is a frame rate loss that I am flying into the ground before I know it? - everything seems "relatively smooth"...

of course its possible that frames drop while getting closer to the ground.but if you say that it seems relatively smooth, i dont think thats your problem.to check you could hit RCtrl+Pause to get a framerate counter

...I've been asked to post a "video" of my "landing experience"

I'd me glad to - how do I do this...

you can just fly any offline mission, and afterwards when exiting, you can click the safe track button.this will create a record of your entire mission.its possible, that this record does not represent what actually happened in the mission though, as this feature still suffers from bugs...

so fraps or shadowplay or any other video capture software would be better in my opinion.

in the end, dont question your skills, but just keep on trying.you will get there im sure

You will find that after a while you will be able to land the P51 from all sorts of strange angles to the runway, glideslopes and whatnot. Hell you will be able to land her on a field with hardly any problems (although you will have trouble taking off again ;) )

I guess what Im trying to say once you get the feel for the plane, by that I mean through the entire flight envelope, and once you learn to visualise what the plane is doing in relation to the ground, you will develop and almost instinctive rapport with it. By 'feel' I mean the ability to know and anticipate what the plane is going to do at a certain TAS and AOA. It sounds like fantasy I know, but this simulation is so amazing its bloody true. I land with the engine on idle most of the time now, its not too pretty but I can get her down without any problems or broken pieces at all. It takes time to figure it out and its different for everyone. It took me about 15-20 flight hours to get to this point. Also the transition was sudden in my case. On landing I was working up a sweat everytime I was on final approach, watching the dials, trying to do everything by the book and failing horribly, on the next it suddenly clicked and it felt natural.

Yup, this is very true. It will become second nature and in the end you want to be familiar enough to handle any approach not just the perfect ones. In time you will get to the point where you come in a little fast...jam the rudder, roll her inverted, bleed that speed off with the control surfaces and then set her down exactly where you want smooth as can be every time. You'll be amazed... at least I was. At some point force yourself to climb above the airfield and switch to idle cutoff on the mixture. Dead stick landings are an invaluable training tool.

you must lean out to either side of the canopy (I usually lean to the left closer to my trackIR camera)... With that, I think also tacview on a separate computer could work wonders in profile descents. Pardon my little grey cells.

OK. I can tell you with track IR and the P51 with three monitors I think I have met the limit with the GT graphics card.

Now one Huge problem is... I can;t get anything to work since i opted to downoad 1.2.8 ( and then they had another upgrade right after that ).

i can't get my Rudder pedals to talk to the software at all... none of my saved profiles will reload. What a mess!

What is the point of ever wanting to upgrade if i understand you have to reinvent everything... I just don't have time for this S*&*T. i AM SO TOTALLY BUMMED OUT. I sat down the other night and spend about 3 hours trying to get anything to work. ( wondering what the heck is going on ). Then it dawned on me.... upgrade. I started reading around and sure enough, I've screwed the pooch and my whole system seems to be a bunch of pretty green LED's that don't do much.

I can't even get a response from my pedals if i try to input a control movement ( I really need to read up on all of that again ).. But this gets off topic so I'll leave it alone. So, until I can figure out how to get my aircraft to even fly, I'm grounded!...

The problem with the upgrades, is that it still overwrites your profiles that you've spent hours testing and tweaking,

There's a little note saying you must 'make a duplicate file and keep it in your user folder - the game references this'. Sure I've yet to see this work. Such a simple feature to fix yet so annoying.

The way around this is, once you have all your profiles sorted, back up the files somewhere else on your PC and after every upgrade, copy them back in.

In addition you can also export your profile in the options menu - find this file and do the same as above.
