ФрогФут Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Awesome! What's the sidestick for? There are two of them (on is on the right side of co-pilot). Weapons' controls without interfering with pilot's controls. Flagrum Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 There are two of them (on is on the right side of co-pilot). Weapons' controls without interfering with pilot's controls. So it is in fact not a cyclic control? Just one pilot flies using the cyclic and the other fiddles with the sidestick and does not interfere with the pilot's inputs? Interesting concept.
-Flo- Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 (edited) Since the title doesn't say Best and Worst Looking " Fighter" Cockpits;) my fave: Back in the good old days, when pilots were actually flying their planes and engineers kept em from exploding: Boeing KC-97/ (B-29)... All those things that needed to be managed: 4 engines needed to be nursed, RPM, manifold press, fuel press, torque, mixture, oil qty; press; temp, cowl flaps, generators, fuel pumps and balance, cabin pressure... those were the days :D Edited June 22, 2014 by -Flo-
xxJohnxx Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 There are two of them (on is on the right side of co-pilot). Weapons' controls without interfering with pilot's controls. But why is it left-handed? You would think it would be right handed as the stick, wouldn't it? Because especially the one in the center is for the pilot (left), so he has to grab the right handed stick with his left hand? PFunk1606688187 Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 (edited) What is it? At first I thought it might be some old ass ghetto A-10 but I don't see a canopy bow so I can't say I'm certain. Its got the F-4 stick so I'd put money on it being American at least. Its got 2 engine by the looks of the fire handles and throttles. Speaking of cockpits, I think this one is awfully clean looking for a pre-vietnam era jet. Particularly interesting whats on the right side. The stick in the middle is actually the right hand stick for the left pilot. The right hand stick for the right pilot is not visible in the picture.
Auger73 Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 I used to not like the blue Russian pits, but they have grown on me. As far as pits go, the F-106 has got to be near the bottom. Visibility, anyone?

The right hand stick for the right pilot is not visible in the picture. Yeah it would make sense giving the position it is in, but not the layout. How do you operate the hat switch on the right hand side of the stick? The palm rest on the bottom would be on the wrong side as well. It just looks like it would be a left hand stick to me. If you compare it to the right-hand operated cyclic you can see that the center stick is similar, but mirrored. I found this pic that shows the stick for the right pilots seat (http://twower.livejournal.com/572607.html). Interesting detail: it seems to be "foldable" or rather "twistable" to get it out of the way if necessary. Well, unique idea somehow at least. But I like the Apache solution with a double-grip collective better: Edited June 23, 2014 by Flagrum
mvsgas Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 (edited) Best looking for me; F-16 C/D block 40/42 ( circa 2000 to 2012) Why? It's what I know, it feels comfortable and I know where the switches are ( never flown in it, but sit on that seat many a times) It makes since to me. Like your old home, not perfect but your home never the less. Ugliest cockpit; F-16 C/D Block 40/42 ( circa 1997-1999) I flown in this one bu, Why is the worst looking? We did not have NVG compatible lighting, so pilots kept dropping light filters, glow sticks among the usual stuff (maps, pens, ring, change, etc.) Later on interim LED light where installed, they kept falling off. Well, we had to find those items before the aircraft could fly again. So many hours upside down, with my head in there trying to find those items. Getting my head stuck, uncomfortable...you get the picture Edited June 23, 2014 by mvsgas To whom it may concern, I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that. Thank you for you patience. Many people don't want the truth, they want constant reassurance that whatever misconception/fallacies they believe in are true..

Just one pilot flies using the cyclic and the other fiddles with the sidestick and does not interfere with the pilot's inputs? Interesting concept. Both have cyclic contols. The right guy (co-pilot) just switches to sidesticks, when operating systems not to interfere with pilot. But why is it left-handed? You would think it would be right handed as the stick, wouldn't it? Because especially the one in the center is for the pilot (left), so he has to grab the right handed stick with his left hand? Left or right handed he still operates 2 sticks. Just like the F-15E back guy. Cali Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Ka-52 F-22 (But not a great fan of non-central stick.) F-35 (I personally wouldn't like to use an iPad-type cockpit as much but still, it looks good.) Flying a sidestick is awesome and once you get use to it you'll love it. I started off flying ss and have even flown a real F-16. It's something you would have to try out for a little bit. I tried my friends centerstick set-up, it's ok, but I prefer the ss much better. i7-4820k @ 3.7, Windows 7 64-bit, 16GB 1866mhz EVGA GTX 970 2GB, 256GB SSD, 500GB WD, TM Warthog, TM Cougar MFD's, Saitek Combat Pedals, TrackIR 5, G15 keyboard, 55" 4K LED

Sceptre Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Sidestick and tilted seat allows the pilot to pull more Gs, and sidestick feels cool :) RTX 2070 8GB | 32GB DDR4 2666 RAM | AMD Ryzen 5 3600 4.2Ghz | Asrock X570 | CH Fighterstick/Pro Throttle | TM MFDs | TrackIR 5

xaoslaad Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 (edited) Su-34. I mean the thing has 12 hardpoints and can carry over 26,000 lbs. of ordinance. The thing has a toilet and galley. They were like lets add everything AND the kitchen sink. And with everything you need to never come down it also looks decent. Edited June 27, 2014 by xaoslaad
Mnemonic Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 I simultaneously love and hate pre-bis MiG-21 cockpits, like PFM: Just look at this tube poking into the face! And there is absolutely nothing to see above it, pilot is officially blind! But looks somehow sexy at the same time :D But the best looking cockpit for me is F-16C no doubt: So much space, such a great view, you basically sitting on a rocket! And awesome design of the instrumentation, easy and almost intuitive. All the modern bells and whistles: HOTAS, JHMCS, love it!
