poiopopo Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Hi I'm looking to upgrade to a new PC from my AMD phenom II x6 1100t to an i7 4790k, for FSX and DCS playing. I chose this CPU because of its already high clock speeds, and im not really willing to play around with the FSB to get the highest possible overclock. Instead, i'll be aiming for a stable 24/7, 4.4ghz by increasing the multiplier and voltage. So with that said, i'm looking for a decent mobo and ram, nothing fancy, that will ensure 4.4ghz at least. Please recommend me some. Also please clarify something for me. Achieving 4.4ghz between a FSB and multiplier overclock. As I understand, the FSB overclock speeds up other components of the PC resulting in a faster overall system, while the multiplier overclock only speeds up the CPU. With regards to DCS and FSX, are the benefits of FSB overclock noticeable over the multiplier? Is it worth going through the trouble? I gave it a crack a while back and ended up settling for the multiplier overclock because it just seemed too complicated.
Abburo Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 The components in my signature allow me to run at 4.4GHz without any volttage or any other dangerous modifications. System is rock solid, temperatures within normal limits. Romanian Community for DCS World HW Specs: AMD 7900X, 64GB RAM, RTX 4090, HOTAS Virpil, MFG, CLS-E, custom

Intel I7 4790K Turbo is already 4.4Ghz. so you will not need to overclock manually to achieve this. I believe FSB overclocking is not possible on latest motherboards. Ah good point. i might just keep it on default speeds then.
SuperKungFu Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 kinda curious would upgrading ram to 32 gig would see any performance gain because I have a 16 right now. I see it for a good deal for 4th of july weekend sale so I might get it. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
KLR Rico Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 I don't think I'd bother with 32GB right now, at least for DCS. I had 20GB on my last computer and when monitoring RAM usage, it rarely went above 6-8 while gaming, and usually not much more than 4. On the other hand, with 32GB you can dedicate half of it to a ramdisk... ;) i5-4670K@4.5GHz / 16 GB RAM / SSD / GTX1080 Rift CV1 / G-seat / modded FFB HOTAS
Deceived Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 ASUS Maximus VII Hero should do the job just fine. Any 16gb 2400 Gskill Kit will do the job just fine as well. Corsair kits are just for looks remember this.... Add in a fresh new Samsung 850 Pro SSD and you're golden :) What gpu's are going in this might I ask?

BitMaster Posted July 19, 2014 Posted July 19, 2014 Just put a rig together for a friend with Asus H97 Pro and i7 4790k 16GB and 780 GTX......AWESOME FPS ! You cant do much wrong with what you have on your list. 32GB only makes sense for DCS if you are willing to configure a RAM-Disc and put DCS in there. .I would rather put the money for the xtra 16GB into you GFX card or a RAID-0 SSD stripeset. That for sure will increase your overall speed in all conditions while gaming and not forcing to work with CACHE drives, they also have their downsides. BitMaster Posted July 19, 2014 Posted July 19, 2014 apropos FSB: As soon as you touch your FSB most of your components run putside of stock operational limits and it is more likely to get across the red line with one or the other chip. You def. need a super cooling system for your mobo and card(s) if you work the FSB too far up. I would get a watercooler for the CPU and may only OC the CPU with the multiplier. That is more stable and doesnt stress other components. 1 Gigabyte Aorus X570S Master - Ryzen 5900X - Gskill 64GB 3200/CL14@3600/CL14 - Sapphire Nitro+ 7800XT - 4x Samsung 980Pro 1TB - 1x Samsung 870 Evo 1TB - 1x SanDisc 120GB SSD - Heatkiller IV - MoRa3-360LT@9x120mm Noctua F12 - Corsair AXi-1200 - TiR5-Pro - Warthog Hotas - Saitek Combat Pedals - Asus XG27ACG QHD 180Hz - Corsair K70 RGB Pro - Win11 Pro/Linux - Phanteks Evolv-X
Griffin Posted July 19, 2014 Posted July 19, 2014 ASUS Maximus VII Hero should do the job just fine. If you don't plan to overclock, anything from Maximus series is overkill and overpriced. The Gigabyte Gaming series motherboards are cheaper and are known to great overclockers and quality products. MSI Gaming series are worth considering too. Point being, if you don't overclock then save your money. 1
poiopopo Posted July 20, 2014 Author Posted July 20, 2014 Guys thanks for all the responses. I've given it a lot of thought, and with talk of new Nvidia cards and CPUs coming out, I decided to, yet again, hold off on any purchase, until I see what DCS Edge is all about. Either way, I'm thinking of holding off till next year, that way all the components I had in mind should be cheaper..
