Thinking of going to Win 8.1 64 bit

I, along with a number of folks here, have been running Win8 or 8.1 for quite some time. It is a worthwhile change IMO.

Been using it quite a while as well. Get a replacement start menu program like Start8 or Classic Shell etc and you can have it boot up directly to the desktop just like Windows 7.

Win 8.1 will do that without an add-on.

EDIT: I actually did not install Classic Shell, which I was using with Win 8, when I upgraded to 8.1.

I never paid attention to it i guess, I got Start8 when I installed 8 and never even looked after the 8.1 upgrade. Good to know though.

The nice search function (win+q) pretty much makes up for the lack of a start key in windows 8/8.1. Even better in some sense. It only takes some getting use to.

I am finding quite a few things about Win 8.x that I like better. Getting used to it is all it really takes. Had I never seen Win 3.x and onward, I would have been fine from the beginning with 8.1

I like the win+x combo also, makes getting to about any settings really easy.

No real experience but it might be worth waiting for Win 9 and using money saved into some nice DCS modules in the mean time.. ;)

Hi gents I agree, i always skip one version stretching my system with updates and upgrades tweaking this and that, its working like a charm atm.

Think about it Windows 8 uses the same platform base as Windows 7 just fancy features NO new Direct X technologies or smarter CPU code for better performance.

Its just spruced up for Tablet type use no hype no super dopers. Waste of money imho.

I'm running OEM Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit which I got online 18 months ago for $180.00AUD. Works like a treat with current system with 8Gig memory.

Get a cheap OEM Window 7 64bit version or best wait for next version after the dust settles and price goes down is my advice.

I posted this in another post earlier felt best to post the same here.

Now keep in mind DCS EDGE Ver 4 GFX engine will utilize and DX11 64Bit technologies and 32Bit no longer supported even in other games its now being phased out.

All the best with your system and many happy huntings.

Cheers,

What component of Win 8.1 would make it run better than Win 7? I can upgrade to Win 8.1 if I want to, but does any aspect of Win 8.1 make it better for gaming than Win 7? With Win 7, I can play any of my old games without a problem at least as far back as Jane's Fighters Anthology. It seems from online posts that Win 8.1 is less backwards compatible. I just don't see any reason to upgrade unless Win 8.1 performs some game related task significantly better than Win 7.

I don't see a reason to upgrade from Win7 to Win8.1 either. Stick with what you've got.

I would recommend Win8.1, IF, you're building a new rig. It's actually a great O/S. For anyone who's happy with their current rig hardware, and running with Win7, stay there! :)

Also, I would not upgrade the O/S, I'd go with a fresh (clean) install.

Found there are no win 8.1 drivers for the scanner part of my OKI mfp colour laser printer/scanner, so had to setup a win7 vbox just for scanning, which is a bit of a pain. So best to check there are drivers for all your devices before you consider upgrading.
