Devrim Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 (edited) Hi... I've bought new 2x4GB RAM, I have already 2x4GB RAM. Problem is that after pressing power button, BIOS goes in reset cycle for every 2 secs. Normally there's no problem with my system. It works great with DCS for example. My system is: Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD4-B3 - BIOS already updated! Intel Core i7-2600 @3.4GHz 650W PSU Corsair Veng. 8GB @1600MHz. - currently installed RAM Asus nVidia GTX560 DCU II TOP GDDR5 1GB Kingston HyperX 3K 120GB SSD Win7 Home Pr. x64 DxDiag is attached. What did I do? I reset all BIOS settings - no luck. Removed BIOS battery - no luck. I installed only new ones to make sure new RAM cards are OK, system worked properly. New modules are OK. Removed all cards. Installed only 4GB old RAM, system works. Later installed 4GB new RAM, system fails! (BIOS starts to reset!) What do you think about the problem? Anyone can help me? Flagrum Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 I am no hardware guy, but because of that I memorized one rule of thumb: never mix different RAM modules - even if they are made by the same manufacturer. So, the picture suggest, that they are not exactly the same modules. Are you at least sure that the specifications are 100% identical? I don't think that the problem is somewhere within the BIOS as such. The BIOS just can't cope with the (mix of) old and new memory modules. RAM Modules: Above > NEW, Below > OLD
txmtb Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 Some things to try. Try booting with just the new ones installed, just to make sure they do work. Then make sure you are matching up the pairs when they are all installed, red ones in slots 1 & 3, black in 2 & 4 or vice versa, some motherboard connectors are color coded to indicate pairs. Manually set the timings, voltage, according to the specs, and turn off XMP in the bios to set them all identical. I had a board where one of the slots died on me, therefore it wouldn't boot anymore. No, no any warning beep. Tested all modules individually on each slot. Shortly, if I don't mix old and new ones they work with pair. I mean only old couple RAMs on motherboard works, only new couple RAMs on motherboard works - on all slots (1&3 or 2&4 doesn't matter). When I install one of old and one of new module, system fails. Slots are OK. :\ ...So, the picture suggest, that they are not exactly the same modules. Are you at least sure that the specifications are 100% identical?...No, they're not 100% same modules. I think it's almost impossible to find old modules today. All (old & new) modules 1600 Mhz, CL9 etc. etc. I told to seller man about my current modules and asked him about compatibility or possible problems. His opinion was that there was not any reason to encounter a problem... Mixing Ram is typically not a good thing, There's prolly a timing conflict between the 2 types. Could be many things really. DDR Type, Frequency, Timings, Voltage, Mainboard Compatibility, etc. There are several Timings that arent Listed on the Product Label So they can both be 9-9-9-24 1.5V DDR3-1600MHz but they can still be in compatible with each other. TaliG Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Hi Devrim! Pls follow these steps... 1. Disconnect the power button cable from the mobo and start the PC by shorting the pins with a metal object. (believe me I ve seen power and reset buttons fail, and they are a pain in the but to figure out if u dnt check them from the beginning) If no deference, reconnect. 2. Test avry memory slot by connecting only one module at a time to each one of the slots. (always drain the remaining current from the psu before you do this) If all slots are fine (PC boots with only one module inserted in all of the slots) your mobo is ok (slots have no broken traces) 3. Insert modules like in the picture below if u didnt already... : 4. If u still have problem, then boot with 1 module into the bios, and disable ''dual channel mem support'', then insert all modules and reboot. cichlidfan Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 I am inclined to side with Skatezilla on this one. The most likely cause is that the memory is just enough different to cause the mobo to have issues. Especially since it will work with either pair. TaliG Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Yes , Skate is right. This is the main reason why manufacturers sale dual and quad channel mem kits. Those kits are tested and certified to work dual or quad channel. But if u disable dual channel support they all work perfectly well. I dnt know the exact impact on game performance though.. TaliG Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Sorry, previews picture for connecting the modules was wrong  this is the ''recommended'' way... Anyway, if u disable dual channel support from inside the bios I think u will be fine... Thank you SkateZilla! I decided to modify the timings and whatever it needs manually. And it works. My steps, below: These two shots are my old (currently using) RAM modules info: And these are new RAM modules info: I randomly selected a method (?) that is equaling new modules to old ones. When installed, I noted down old modules' values on a paper. I removed them and installed new ones. I entered Advanced Memory Settings page and set this option Expert to access values to edit. ...and edited necessary(different) values. Saved it and rebooted. Voilaa!!! Now all modules works together perfectly! One of values seems still 174, not 108 though... Confused... Anyway! Now, it's early morning and I have to sleep. I didn't test all of them with DCS or any software. I hope they will work properly. And I'll try to increase the frequency 1600MHz. When I try to do that timing values change, so I need to re-equalize them according to new (overclocked) values. :) I hope it will work with same method. Thank you guys! who gave attention to my problem and try to solve it... BitMaster Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Yes, this can be tricky down to a point where you happily give all modules to a friend ( for some bucks ) and get a 4-module kit that matches. I just built a rig for a friend, Asus Z97-Pro, i5 CPU, 8GB, PSU...all new..and guess what I put the RAM in, powered it up and got stuck in RAM-Integrity test, it wouldn't even go to Bios. I then did ALOT of things to fix it, as I thought none of the parts are broken. It turned out, with 3 x 2-Pack of RAMs ( all DDR3, all working in other PC's ) that the mobo ONLY booted with ONE module in only ONE slot ( the slot that Asus doesn't want you to insert a single module ). As soon as 2 were installed, BANG, stuck... OK, I finally gave in, drove back to my wholesales people and got a new board... FIXED. In same scenarios, the slots are broken and there is nothing you can do but exchange the faulty piece. Afaik the 2 Dual-Slots can run on different settings, just not among one pair. If that would be a good idea to do, I don't think so. But your RAM seems to be very alike and thus you should be able to get it stable, even when OCed. Trying to use the SPD-Chip/XMP values aint a bad idea to fine-tune the chip settings. Fiddle, fiddle, curse, fiddle some more...and eventually it will work Welcome to the world of hardware and Bios settings, even worse than those D3D acronyms, settings and what not else ...LoL Bit Gigabyte Aorus X570S Master - Ryzen 5900X - Gskill 64GB 3200/CL14@3600/CL14 - Sapphire Nitro+ 7800XT - 4x Samsung 980Pro 1TB - 1x Samsung 870 Evo 1TB - 1x SanDisc 120GB SSD - Heatkiller IV - MoRa3-360LT@9x120mm Noctua F12 - Corsair AXi-1200 - TiR5-Pro - Warthog Hotas - Saitek Combat Pedals - Asus XG27ACG QHD 180Hz - Corsair K70 RGB Pro - Win11 Pro/Linux - Phanteks Evolv-X
