Hi!

I bought Black Shark 2 and A-10C, and while my Logitech Extreme 3D PRO "kinda" works, it's definitely less than optimal.

I've seen people recommending the TrackIR5, so I'm saving up for that. My question, though, is:

If you had a TrackIR 5, what HOTAS would you pick? X-52 PRO, X-55 Rhino, or Thustmaster Warthog?

I've seen more than a few threads mention the issues some folks have had with all three setups. Based on personal experience, what you experienced folks choose as the most reliable, trouble-free HOTAS setup to use with a TrackIR in a DCS sim?

And an off topic question, is there a section on the forums where you an suggest ideas for games you'd like see DCS work on/release? I was talking with some people on another forums about the recent Dallas TX Air Races, and a few of up game up with a game idea that sounds like it would be great fun. There hasn't been a decent Air Race game in AGES, and we think the time would be perfect, and DCS has the requisite expertise to successfully pull it off.

I've found the X55 Rhino for $200, and the TrackIR5 is $149, so that would definitely come in cheaper than $460 just for the TM Warthog.

As long as there aren't a lot of issues with that HOTAS, I might lean in that direction.

Anyone else have an opinion on what would be best suited to work with the games, and the TrackIR5? All opinions welcome, just please be specific about any issues you may've encountered with any of the 3 HOTAS.

I have the basic X52, it meets all the requirements for a hotas. I don't know if it was solved in the pro version, but mine has issues with the sliders, wheels, and throttle axis all being fairly jittery. The sliders and wheels issue I've dealt with by just using them as bands mapped to keystrokes in the software.

The X55 looks mighty tempting, I'd probably buy that if I was buying a new stick from scratch.

I can't imagine spending nearly $500 on the warthog, it looks like a nice bit of kit, but hotdamn. I'd rather scratch build my own controller for that kind of money.

I have the Warthog, X55 and X65F and I have to say the X65F has grown on me the most I must say. You may not be able to buy it anymore though. So for value between the other 2 I would have to say the X55. I don't find the Warthog worth the extra $$$.

The hog is a nice stick, I have it and would buy again. It is more expensive as you know.

The others are as functional, i.e. at the end of they day they are all just bottons on a throttle and stick and everything can be mapped.

Where the hog comes in to its own and the others cannot really be compared is when you are using the A10C. Using the hog with the a10c is in a league of its own but it comes at a premium.

Another thought: With the Warthog you need to buy rudder pedals, if you want to fly helos or prop planes.

Good point, it doesn't have a stick that can twist.

no it doesn't have twist stick, but twist sticks are crap anyway, you may as well map buttons to the rudder for all the finese a twist stick has compared to real rudder pedals :)

I have an X52pro, rudder pedals and I'm just getting used to TrackIR. I'm still playing with my mapping, now that the TrackIR has freed-up the sliders/hat that that I used before for views.

Twist rudders are useless, especially for Helo's, but that wasn't your question.

The X52 lacks some of the switchgear to give you 1:1 mapping to the A10c switchgear, and you need to use the Saitek mapping software if you want to utilize all of the rotaries on the X52 - I found the axis assignments available in DCS don't really allow you to use them easily.

The X52pro wouldn't be my first choice now, but it works fine and I can't justify replacing it!

I agree on the X65F. It's the best HOTAS IMO if you like force sensing. I like it so much I just bought an almost new one on Ebay for $305 as a backup to my current one. You can still find one if you are patient.

X65F is also going to be the best HOTAS for Star Citizen IMO.
