Virus or computer not fast enough?? - slow frame rate

Recommended Posts

Hello, im currently playing steam version of dcs world with f 15c, and a10c warthog, and the frame rate is pretty slow even on low graphics settings (about 10 fps) I have an AMD FX 4130 quad core 3.8 ghz CPU, 8 gb of ram, and a gtx 670 gpu, i havent tested it out on other games recently but before i could run modern games at full graphics settings at high fps, including an extremely modded skyrim with 100+ mods, and high res texture packs... etc. So im thinking i probobly have a virus, but i wanted to be sure

other problems i could see, is i have a fairly cluttered desktop,

(60 desk top icons) and my hardrive is almost completely full (12 gb left of 250) but i still feel like it shouldnt be running this slow

Do you have any driver overrides on in AMD Catalyst?

Is Windows doing something in the background like auto scheduled defrag?

Is your computer overheating or your power unit is dying? No matter how great hardware you have, if they are overheated or underpowered they will perform crippled. Even if you don't notice a difference in Skyrim, you may notice it in other more demanding games like DCS, which in my experience is much more demanding than Skyrim.

Is that your system drive? Desktop icons don't do anything, btw. System tray icons might be another matter.

Hey!

From my experience it's bad news I'd think... The system isn't right for the current build of DCS.

I built a AMD PC with 8350 running at 4.4GHz, 16 gig RAM, ATI HD7970 and DCS on the SSD. It would run Warthog at about 30fps tops with massive stutters (down to as low as 5fps) whenever the screen was occupied with loads of other players (i.e. on Aerobatics server online) or whenever there was all out war going on (i.e. Single player campaign).

It completely ruined the experience and I put money into changing to the PC I should have built if I had done more research. Changing to an Intel i5 made a huge difference, and then a few months later switching to GeForce 780 made another big (but not quite as big as CPU swap) difference.

Now I run pretty smoothly (more important to me than FPS) most of the time at High with Civ traffic, AA, Shadowing etc... even with a busy screen and cluster munitions!

That said.. DCS World 2.0 (EDGE) is soon to be released and it is a total overhaul of the graphics engine. Who knows... maybe it will be a little more optimised for AMD. As it is though... I'm sorry to say I'm not sure how much boost you can get from your current rig with tweaking...

I've been running DCS on an i7 920 running at 2.6 for a long time now. I do have 12 Gigs of ram now, but used 8 previous to this. and ran the 6970 amd graphics card. I would bump up the ram and if the GPU doesn't have at least 2Gigs of Ram (Nvidia) I would invest in one that did. That is all u need. I ran all of those iterations on High Graphics never had to lower it to increase frame rates.

This was a Boutique Builder iBuypower rig. thanks for the responses, i dont have amd catalyst, theres nothing going on in the background, but now that i think about it, my pcs fans used to spool up to really high revs when i was playing a demanding game, and now they remain quiet, do you know if theres any way to test my power suppply? i went and downloaded a bunch of bench mark software and temp monitors, and neither my cpu or gpu are overheating, the cpu doesnt go above 20c even with graphics settings on ultra, when i first got this pc a year ago, i thought i remembered playing dcs on highest settings getting about 20 fps. yes my gpu has 2 gigs of memory.

DCS has changed enough in the past year that a drop in frames on some machines would not be altogether unusual.

Typically, yes, DCS performs better with Intel CPUs as well as with Nvidia GPUs.

are you saying dcs runs better with intel cpu?

I believe so.. Im running a 3Ghz Q9650, GTX460 & 8Gig Ram and while things do bog down in a heavy smoke/explosion area I can usually get by with low-med settings. General MP is no problem.

ok so i think i figured out whats going on, for some reason my gpu is being bottle necked when i run dcs (maybe for other games too) when i run the bench mark it runs at its full 1100 mhz clock speed, but while running dcs its only running 350 mhz which is its baseline.

Posted

okay thanks, this is frustrating, i manually increased the fan speed for the gpu to 100% becuase it was automatically bottlnecking itself after it got above 60c, and now its running at 910 mhz (which is still lower than its capable of) but the frame rate is still at 5 fps at airport, and 10 to 15 in the air on the lowest graphics settings, i will try the cpu power mode.

i changed the power settings for maximum performance, but it only gave a slight increase in fps (about 2 more fps).. maybe i should take this to a computer tech forum, cuz something isnt working right..

My machine (specs in my sig, below) is overclocked with water cooling and two GPU cards. If I fly around Sochi with lots of action going on, I get about 20 FPS, up high, away from the busy cities, I get above 50 or 60. Everything is set to whatever the max is, and I run only one of my three screens. Smoke and cluster bombs kill my FPS, down to 5 sometimes. When DCS comes up, my cooling fan perks up and when the "stuff" all begins, the fan screams away.

DCS, as it is now, is CPU bound for most of the time, chewing on only one of my four cores with other progs focused on the other cores. My graphics cards are never above slow idle even at the most intense times. Just one of my graphics cards is overkill for DCS, but two....!!! are a huge waist of money. As others have said, maybe Edge will change the fight from the CPU to the cards? I sure hope so. I'm really loving those screenshots of Las Vegas!

The Hornet is best at killing things on the ground. Now, if we could just get a GAU-8 in the nose next to the AN/APG-65, a titanium tub around the pilot, and a couple of J-58 engines in the tail...

captain, what are the specs on ur system, also are you getting those frame rates during free fly, or during a mission. i just checked the frame rate on free fly, and with the lowest graphics settings, imgetting 20 fps on the ground, and 30 in the sky.

Don't mean to rain on your parade, but these are my specs to my PC and I have never had any issues running the game on high for every graphics setting. Never really see a drop in performance, even when playing on line. And I have had this comp for roughly a year or two now.

AMD FX 8120 Eight Core Processor 3.11GHz

8G of ram

Windows 7 64bit

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti

Not sure if that will help, but your specs seem better than mine, and for all intensive purposes, should run better.

yeah i turned all the settings down to low, i changed the resolution to as low as it would go which was 1080 from 1600 and the frame rate is the same, yeah im thinking its the cpu, because even after i got the gpu back up to its normal clock speed of 900mhz from 324 the frame rate was the same, and the cpu cooling fan isnt revving up at all like it used to, so i think it might be throttling.

Posted

i did at first, but i disconnected the other monitor, and it didnt affect frame rate, i was looking at my system performance during the game, and it says its only using 4.5 gb of ram, and thats after the 2gb of ram that my pc uses at baseline, so its 0nly using 2.5 gb of ram for the game, which seems low, also the cpu is only working 50-60% its usage, so it seems like the game isnt telling the pc to start using its full capabilities to run the game, which makes me think its a virus issue...
