Any word of when the mig-29kub prototypes will be flying?

I don't know FF :) .

But the MiG-29M2 provides a very good indication of what it will look like :)

Cheers,

But what kind of missile is that between the engines..?;)

R-77.....but then the aircraft in the picture is not an Su-33 either ;)

Su-27SK there.

And, I guess the mig-29kub will look like the m2, i.e. FAT, like it's pregnant.

Going a bit OT here.. but what other diffrences there are between the S and SK? I've understood that the SK is just an export version..?

Dont want to hijack this thread but did you guys see on the news that Iran just tested a new "Submarine missile"?

They claim it to be the fastes anti ship torpedo capable of making 100m per second (360km/h or 195 miles/h). Theres footage of that on my local channels and it apears to achieve that stunt by the means of a non choke water proof rocket motor.

The missile reminded me of a hawk missile, roughly the same size but without wings. It was launched from a speed boat (like the WW2 PT boats) launching it from a rail to the water in a shalow angle. It then was visible an underwater trail of bubles quickly spread out to the distance. I suspect though that its merely short range as a rocket motor will burn off rapidely and the launcher speed boat has to be in close range for a shot wich makes it vulnerable to any modern anti-ship missile lauched from the targeted warship.

Anyone heard of this?

I aint a sailor, nor was I on any sub, but to my way of thinking, the faster they go underwater, the more noise its going to create. If it is to have any success in engaging submarines, it will have to have one powerful sonar or MAD gear installed, or else its just going to be a dumb weapon. And anything else would just take away the size of the warhead so it more than likely will have a low pk.

Then the problem with that would be that the instant it was fired EVERYONE would know where it was fired from...and with a such short range, hell prolly score at the most 2 kills or hits before everyone destroys that submarine. Then theres the problem with the size of warhead still.

Makes me wonder what, if any, type of subs the iranians have.

Yeah i figured it should only be fired line of site...no guidance whatsoever from the warhead. only way you can steer such a thing would be control wires, and with guidance like that you either lose the target alltogether to survive an attack or guide it to the target and risk getting killed.

Iran is trying to show teeth even if they now they would not stand a day against the USA in a direct warfare.

I am afraid that would be something like 5 times the days needed for Iraq with conventional weapons (and without counting Syria).

Dont overestimate them. If USA would throw in all they have ( If needed ) they would defend both - Syria and Iran really fast.

Im not a USA fanboi but the others wouldnt stand a chance.

Not that I am an Iran fanboi! If you ask me we have to stop them (Iran) before it is too late.

Looking at this beautiful weapon, some contradicting thoughts are coming to my head... It's amazing how creative people can be when they want to hurt each other... That missile is simply the perfect ship-killer!

Yes that photo shows the Su-33 with the "Kh-41", but the photo Viper posted did not ;) . Anyway, like I said earlier in this thread, the 3M80E missile is not operational in an airlaunched version.

It was proposed(hence the reason the Su-33 was seen displayed with it), but so far it is only operational in the original SSM version(P-270 "Moskit") - mainly onboard Pr. 956("Sovremenny class") destroyers and Molnya-M("Tarantul III class") missile boats :)

It's a 'revenge' weapon, meant to be used in conjunction with a nuclear warhead.

There was talk of Russia having buyers for it some time ago ...

Iran has Kilo-class diesel-electrics(SSK) - 3 vessels IIRC.

Alfa, we both know that all this 3 Kilos are on a Waterfall Display of a 688 Hunter / Killer....

Well, diesel subs are considered a lot quieter than the nuclear ones, so the LA subs may be tracking them now, but, the Kilos should also be aware of its "enemies".

The Russians have a guided Shkval missile, with a conventional warhead, but those are classified and not for export. The Shkval has always been a last resort weapon, only fired by subs that are faced certain destruction by the enemy (torpedo heading towards them), and as stated earlier, the immense amount of bubbles gives away the rough position of the launcher.

I for one hope they will not attack Iran, why bother? And there are some economical consequences to such an expensive war, and Russia has economical interests in Iran, so the UN path may be fruitless if the US really wants a war. Oops, sorry.

The Kh-41 is dead as a air launched ASM, even the su-27KUB will not carry it. Kh-31s are somehow better, as they are already available, and only upgrades are needed to keep them up to date.

There is also some other air and ship launched supersonic cruise missile, it's white and long, and has a set of wings, a jet engine, and a Mach 4 final stage, its name consists of numbers and was showed at some weapon exposition. (I forgot how it was called) This missile has more potential than the Brahmos/Yakhnot because of its high terminal speed.

Yeah running on batteries is really low noise. But once u have a 688i on your a$$ i dont believe you can hide. Maybe in the Atlantic or other ocean but not in such limited space as the persian gulf. I also dont believe that russians sold Iran subs with all the latest low noise pumps and so on.

Regarding the KH-41, yes its deadly because its so fast. But i think that NATO updated their CWIS and other systems to be ready for a KH-41. ( Dont ask me about a full volley of them :D )

Actually, diesel subs are better in littoral waters than blue waters (where nuke subs rule) ... so you never know.
