On sale for 5 more hours!

https://www.humblebundle.com/store/p/styx_masterofshadows_storefront

This is simply the most interesting game I've played in years. Quite simple as far as AI goes but otherwise - wow!

http://styx-thegame.com/

You should play it if:

  • you like stealth http://steamcommunity.com/app/242640/discussions/0/619574421329731302/
  • you'd like to try something original but old-school in how it plays
  • you missed challenging games
  • comedy-fantasy like the LotR movies get on your nerves and you'd like to try some raw fantasy with no #$%^
  • you want a game that looks great even on average gaming PC

PS. 30 meter fall (in a hay stack or not) is a no go in Styx.

PS2. Plenty of reviews mention 'bad controls'. It's mostly nonsense. There are only occasional ledge detection problems. Other than that it's up to your skills to make it look like a ballet. See my test run below

PS3. I must stress this again, Styx game mechanics is strongly based on conventions. Guards won't see you from 20 meters in a reasonably lit area for example. Deal with it and you're going to be fine. A workaround I used was setting my gamma level two ticks down in the options. BTW, you should calibrate your display including gamma before playing Styx anyway. http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=143798

Wow. Been a long, long time since a non flight sim game intrigued me.

Yeah, same here! I wouldn't post about the game just because it's on sale. I've spent over 60 hours playing through the game on the highest difficulty level* whereas I usually whine when a game extends over 12 hours of gameplay.

* it's called 'Goblin'. While many people play it for disabled melee (it's replaced by death scenes upon detection) I chose it for increased awareness of AI which I feel underperforms >badly< on 'Normal'. Also you get that Commandos BEL sensation after you actually manage to make some progress through a mission which seemed impossible just 5 minutes ago. OK, maybe an hour ago but you get the drift.

So I recommend 'Gonlin' level right from the start of your first play through. Use quick saves instead of resorting to lower difficulty levels is my recommendation.

Another aspect is how the game looks. It may well make you not want to go back to another game struggling on your medium hardware and will surely make you hate any developers of unoptimized games like ArmA 3 or devs using their lousy in-house excuse for an engine (Frictional games) instead of paying 5 bucks for the Unreal Engine 3.

I've always rooted for bad guys in movies, and when I saw goblin as the main character I knew this game was made by anti-social people like me. :D

Why disabled the melee? You work so hard to get there just to see a cut scene. Hmm..

ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P

I didn't see him as a bad guy. Not a good guy either. And that corrupt human society depicted in the game is quite a perspectivechanger. Well, maybe not society. More like individuals. See? That's the beaty of the lore in Styx. On top of not being... Twilighted like LoTR.

And beware of story spoilers!

Trivia:

The story depicted in Styx Master of Shadows takes place 200 years before events of another game of the studio I.e. Of Orcs and Men. OOaM is of much lower production quality though.

I've watched a couple of reviews where one mentioned bad control while the other didn't even mention ledge detection problem. I guess the latter reviewed the patched version. I'm going to get this game soon.

I see you don't agree with LoTR cheery tone? :D

Yes, there was an initial wave of bad reviews by people not paying attention to the introductory part of the game, not to mention spending some time to actually master the controls. Actual ledge detection problems exist very rarely. The opposite issue is present though. Styx would often stick to another close ledge to the one you had planned grabbing onto. And this has been made worse by the recent patch. Yup, sorry to say that but the devs catered to the voiced minority of 'the first wave'. I still discourage anyone to play an unpatched version though!

As for LoTR, it's not that I don't agree with it. It's just that... it makes me sick :D

PS. What the game tutorial doesn't mention is it seems to matter where you point the camera at while making a jump for a ledge. For example, while jumping from a beam to another beam like this || -> || Styx may not grab onto the second one if you (an extreme case) keep pointing your camera straight down.

I've finished the game on the highest difficulty level and did a short re-play stint. Basically the game lets you re-play the missions with your entire skill tree state from your last moments in the first gameplay. I use Bandicam to record short 10 min pieces and I don't have software to stitch them without recompression (VirtualDub's direct stream copy does not work with MP4 files), so I've uploaded everything here

http://www.mediafire.com/?1sy0j6qn1o76r

Huge files with some 15 minutes of gameplay, sorry for that. Free version of B doesn't give you much control over it... The files should be up not sooner than in an hour.

PS. I don't want to spam the forum section with unrelated game news so here's an additional headsup for classic lovers

-75% now on Steam along with its prequel - Of Orcs and Man

As a bonus, Mordheim is also on sale.

Hadn't I subscribed to this thread? Anyway, a buddy told me about it and now I have Styx in my Steam lib, it's pretty close to the top of my (long) list of games I want to play when I'm not flying DCS or watching TV shows or working for a living. :)

See, that? Right there is the problem. You really have to eliminate that last one. Trust me, it is quite liberating. :D

And what to do with all that time? Despite almost a year less on the ED forum, you have more than 5 times as many posts. Dunno, for the time being, going to work seems like a nice alternative to spending even more time on the forum than I already do.

(Besides, I'm sure Thrustmaster or someone else will come up with great new toys to spend our money on, something along the lines of "Well, sure, the Warthog is great and all, it's worked fine for all these years, but this new toy is just... better. I want it. I really need it. My precioussssssss!"). :D

You might have a point. :helpsmilie:

Fortunately, my retirement pays well enough for the occasional new toy. Of course, currently I am in the process of buying a house, so I am rather out of the toy market for a wee bit. ;)

Sorry for the OT, Bucic!
