Hi, guys!

I got a feature request for the DCS P-51D: is the functioning Detrola radio so people can navigate the realistic way. Thanks!

Cheers,

Vincent

I am sure it could be implemented, but I think - even if it will be implemented - you can only receive triggered radio messages.

Keep in mind "the Detrola is a receiver only. You can't talk to towers and range stations with this equipment. Your only means of talking to towers and range stations is the VHF set. That is the advantage of being able to use both sets at once - you can receive on one and transmit or receive on the other." (p. 33, original P-51D Flight Manual).

What exactly do you want to do with it?

EDIT: According to http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/detrola_beacon_receiver_model_438.html "the receiver was not intended for direction finding but only for establishing whether a specific beacon station could be received and was endowed with a short antenna."

This wasn't very useful for navigation, at least in Europe during combat, seems like it was all about range and nothing to do with location. Right now you could "fake" this type of beacon in the sim with triggers. But again, wouldnt tell you were to go, but that you were within range of the beacon.

L'importante non è stabilire se uno ha paura o meno, è saper convivere con la propria paura e non farsi condizionare dalla stessa. Ecco, il coraggio è questo, altrimenti non è più coraggio ma incoscienza.

According to the P-51D/K M & E Manual, the Detrola Model-438, aka the BC-1206, was only fitted for ferrying operations: there was an alternative version manufactured by Setchell Carlson http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/setchell_range_receiver_bc_1206.html:

Hi, sithSpawn!

What kind of radio did the p-51d use so the pilots can navigate from point A to point B? I figured the p-51d used the ADF radio for navigation because there is the direction pointer on the radio compass on the upper left hand corner of the instrument panel. Thanks!

Vincent

Hi,

P-51 pilots usually did not use any radio navigation aid during WWII.

If you look on pictures from WWII you will not see any additional antenna on P-51 operating in ETO. They had nothing.

Only Mustangs operating from IwoJima were equipped with AN/ARA-8 radio homing units "UncleDog" (two antenna masts behind cocpit).

And lots of Mustangs operating in CBI and Mustangs from 5th AF on Philippines and Okinawa were equipped with ADF (loop antenna behind standard antenna mast).

Ground beacons for Detrola receiver were only placed on continental USA (wire between cocpit and rudder).
