I have always been interested in post-war mustangs. I have noticed that much older/heavily-used aircraft have fixed tailwheels. It turns out, it was a common practice to remove the tailwheel doors and fix the tailwheel down as a simple fix for retraction problems. I was wondering if this would be possible to model. I have not messed around with the program files for this game and don't know if this is something simple or hugely complex.

Are you implying that the tail wheel was fixed so that it did not have the slightest side to side directional movement or that it was disconnected so it would not retract and permanently remain extended? Personally I can envision a multitude of issues with a tail wheel fixed permanently aligned along the long axis of the aircraft. The P-51 and most tail draggers are difficult enough as it is to taxi (steer), can't imagine NOT having a movable rear tail wheel. What advantage do you see in such a configuration?

Still the question

Fixed down like on some Bf109s.

No revolving movement what so ever?

I believe he is talking about the wheel being fixed in place so that it cannot be retracted along with the main gear. I suspect rotation was not disabled.

Perhaps I could have been a little more clear. This was a retraction issue only. Basically made into a non-retractable tailwheel. Whether it was steerable or not was not an issue. Otherwise you'd have to take off on railroad tracks! I was hoping there was a way to model a "beater" Mustang in service way past its prime as shown by the attached photograph (note the Mustangs in service with Hueys!)

I sensed that was what you were inferring, but as you said. I wasn't clear on the specifics. It's all good!

You could try to damage tail wheel, maybe then it won't retract.

It's now September 2022 and still no one has an answer to this question (because I do need it for a project).

Yeah, it happens when a stupid request is stupid in 2015 and still stupid in 2022 or 2032 🤣 . Sometimes I believe certain people think of this like an open menu restaurant where you can order anything and the cook will make you whatever just because your pretty face. I mean, really guys?

Let me clarify the thing. No, it's not "just" making the tail wheel fixed and that's all, an "easy five minutes copy paste code thing" as some people think about so many things in DCS. If you make tail wheel fixed it has an impact on flight model, which you have to calculate, it would be like having another more model in the module. It would be like asking the Bf109K to have the fixed tail wheel, more usually than not welded gear doors and fixed tail wheel, and/or main gear doors removed as it were the case again more often than not. And then again, why keep it K-4 when you almost have a G-10 with all those modifications? Yeah, no, I'm not saying that kind of things wouldn't be interesting and appealing for the sim, planeset, mission makers and all, but it's like a new aircraft on top of the aircraft already having two models in one. It wouldn't be """just""", definitely no. Make it a request in the wishlist and perhaps at some point, definitely not tomorrow, devs can do something with regards to it. But sneaking it at main thread, or bug list like some people do sometimes, won't make it less of a wishlist request, and not an easy one.

A wise person told once there's no stupid question but stupids answers....

Following your 3 Michelen Star thoughts..... More people than you think ask for anything special and out of menu and maybe chef/cook has no time to personally answer them but, in a good maners (politely) way, send back the waitress/waiter and tell those picky customers is not possible their demand in that time. It usually worked before 2015 I'm pretty sure it doesn't work in 2022 and I'm totally sure it won't work in 2032 if people like you say what you've said in the way you've said cause you're wrongly confident for saying that.

Do I need to attach any emogi you to understand what I've said? I only attach a Pablo Neruda's poem fragment:

Me gustas cuando callas y estás como distante.
Y estás como quejándote, mariposa en arrullo.
Y me oyes desde lejos, y mi voz no te alcanza:
déjame que me calle con el silencio tuyo.

Yeah, because that kind of answers boasting a clear superiority syndrome while obviating some things are always helpful either 🤣🤣🤣  😜.

PM me if you'd like to talk more widely and I'll explain something you didn't get.

Whatever, but I'd really like to explain something you obviously don't know about me and my words. It's your fault assuming too far from me, not mine, but…

@rodion_herrera

In mission editor you can set failures,

LFAqmFe.png

After setting this i end up with this, i think it is as close as you can get.

You just need to wait 1 or 2 min before take off, so the failures kick in.

Thank you Graf Spee, this is exactly what I was looking for, I too was contemplating on the failure tables, but just didn't know the way to access it.

Laughing so hard at the ManOWar/OldCrow pissing battle now. 😄 Cheers guys, it's only a game. 🙂

I know, too many people take it too serious, even my words are taken too serious and out of context but that's story of my life, pretty used to it 🤣 .

Sadly this option is not available on K4. For some reason it have a lot less failures to choose..

I know the reason, German engineering, a lot more fail proof, some systems just can not fail.😁

Haha sure, i would like to agree but i'm afraid that was not exactly true especially at 1944-45.  😁
