lennycutler Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 I set up a couple of missions using the Mig-21Bis vs a B-52. In one mission the Mig approaches the target directly ahead, facing the B-52's nose at close to the same altitude. In the other mission the approach is from the B-52 3-6 O'Clock position. The Mig carried only RS-2US.... In both cases, once the B-52 starts dispensing Chaff....it has the effect of causing most of the RS-2US missiles to miss. I thought this missile is a beam rider....and as such would follow the Radar lock directly... Is it correct that Chaff can impact the accuracy of this missile while the target is locked on the Mig-21Bis Radar? 1 Velocity MicroI7-4790 Windows 7 Home Premium 16Gigs RAM EVGA NVIDIA GTX 1070 500GB SSD TM Hotas Warthog
MBot Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 This sounds wrong, but I assume that this is a general DCS problem. Chaff in DCS is simulated quite abstract. For example it can deflect SAM missiles that are command guided (such as SA-3, SA-8, SA-15 or Roland). On the other hand, chaff in DCS cannot break radar locks, which would again make it effective in the defense against command guided missiles, beam riders and radar guided AAA. I hope that this will be improved one day, but it will be a task for ED and not LNS.
lennycutler Posted January 31, 2015 Author Posted January 31, 2015 Chaff Effectiveness Against RS-2US I have attached a compressed zip TACVIEW file reflecting a KC135 being partially successful in evading 3 of 4 missiles with Chaff. I would agree, that this is an issue that needs to be addressed by DCS.Tacview-20150131-101814-DCS.txt.zip Velocity MicroI7-4790 Windows 7 Home Premium 16Gigs RAM EVGA NVIDIA GTX 1070 500GB SSD TM Hotas Warthog
Lordbaldur Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Chaff in real life can confuse aircraft radar if that's what you're asking My Channel
Einherjer Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Thats right but a beam rider like the RS-2US should be not affected by a chaff if the radar lock of the host aircraft is not broken.
WinterH Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Enough chaff may be confusing MiG's radar and hence cause the beam to be pointed at somewhere other than the target, could it not? Remember we are talking about a radar that get significant interference from clouds and terra firma. SUBS17 Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 The Mig21s radar would have been developed before filters for chaff had been developed for more modern radar so an older model Mig21 would be effected I think. The newer upgraded Mig21s might have a more modern radar that might have a filter for chaff. [sIGPIC] [/sIGPIC]
Ce_Zeta Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 I think that it's a possibility, but a beam-riding guidance should be more robuts against chaffs. I always load a mixed loadout of IR and Radar missiles. [sIGPIC]http://i.imgur.com/YexElgV.jpg[/sIGPIC]
GGTharos Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 A beam riding missile will go where the beam is pointed. There's no such simulation in game though, but on the other hand the representation is fair in the sense that the mig's radar lock would be broken by chaff or ecm.
