kontiuka Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 I've been playing with this and I'm not sure it's working correctly although I may just be using it wrong. I set my course on my HSI to 360 degrees and then engaged SCS (screen 1). Then I flew in an easterly direction. I expected the CDI on the HSI to move to the left but it moved to the right instead (screen 2). The second thing I noticed was the TAD. Since I set the course to be 360 degrees, I would have expected the green course line to go from the SCS waypoint up through the green north arrow. As you can see in screen 3, the course line is to the left of the north arrow. Not sure if these are bugs or just settings issues.
Yogi Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 The CDI moves to the right because you are moving away from the stearpoint SCS, which is also indicated by the To-From Indicator on the HSI. The green course line is set to 360 degrees from Stearpoint SCS. The green north arrow is reference to your aircraft position. I hope that makes sense.
kontiuka Posted February 18, 2015 Author Posted February 18, 2015 Ya, that makes sense. Thanks. A kind of funny thing with the TAD though. At the very instant I make the SCS steerpoint, I would think that since my aircraft and the steerpoint are in the exact same spot at that point, the green course line would, in fact, pass through my aircraft's north arrow but it doesn't. It is slightly to the left. As my plane flies north, I'm keeping it on course by keeping the CDI centered in the HSI. However, my plane gradually diverges away from the course line in the TAD. Is it possible the course line in the TAD is not the same as the magnetic course on the HSI? I'll have to provide some more screenshots.
Puma Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 Sounds like one is correcting for magnetic variance and the other isn't. I think I recall something about the in the manual but am at work and can't check. kontiuka Posted February 19, 2015 Author Posted February 19, 2015 Just a couple of screens to illustrate my last post. Screen 1 shows the SCS course line at time = 0. See how the course line passes to the left of the north arrow. Screen 2 shows the divergence after a few minutes even though my HSI shows I'm on course.
Wrecking Crew Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 There is about a 7° offset. I've seen this when testing, when I place a flightpath in the ME and then compare the actual direction of flight. kontiuka Posted February 19, 2015 Author Posted February 19, 2015 (edited) ^ Ya, like Puma said, the TAD is likely taking into account magnetic variance. If so, that would be inconsistent with other course lines like those for your flight plan which aren't adjusted for magnetic variance. Edited February 19, 2015 by kontiuka
baltic_dragon Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 The magnetic variance is also given by your CDU in the NAV / attributes page. It says sth like 5.5E - so if you want to have a correct line, adjust your course by this (deduct 6 from the course). Should work like charm then. For more information, please visit my website. kontiuka Posted February 20, 2015 Author Posted February 20, 2015 ^ True. Just that the TAD and the HSI conflict. No matter what course I enter in the HSI, I'll either be able to keep the CDI centered or keep the course line on the TAD centered but not both.
Revientor Posted July 31, 2024 Posted July 31, 2024 I get how works the SCS fuction, but all the others ones working in a propper manner ( 2024) I am pretty sure SCALE is doing nothing...
