I haven't flown in the Huey for a few months. So I decided to do a mission today and found this issue that did not exist before.

When I enter a gunner position, I still have to steer the AC, but from the gunner's seat. Any one else ever have this happen? If so...is there a way to fix it?

I went into the M.E. and created a mission and it did the same thing.

Did this come in an update, or is something amiss in my setup? Maybe I'll do a DCS repair and see if that works.

There is no autopilot in the huey.

If you want to aircraft to fly itsself you need to activate some autopilot cheats. I believe you can find them in the options page. Maybe under miscelanous.

LWin-A for level flight if memory serves. Think of it as giving the chopper to the 2nd pilot for a while and it doesn't feel like a cheat ;)

Wait a sec........When I usually get into the gunner's seat or the co-pilot's seat and use the sights. I could completely let go if the stick and the helicopter would fly itself. I could be in a dead fall and switch to one of the gunner's seats and the plane would correct itself. How did that feature just go away?? When I went back to the pilot (1) I could feel the AC jar about as I took the controls back.

I did all of this without using any key commands other than 1, 2, 3, 4......So this wasn't originally a feature in the Huey?

I knew I wasn't crazy!!!

Until a week ago.....My Huey module did this. Now...it does not.

If you watch the second video, it shows how the pilot is on "hold" while person is in the gunner position. Did this get removed in a patch or something? Or is there a problem with my module, or some setting that I have to correct?

As it is now....I have to steer the AC from the rear gunner's position.

I can't test it now but if that line is checked you have "AutoPilot" in Huey when you leave the pilot seat. That is not a realistic Autopilot but only a AI pilot/copilot that will try to follow the mission.

The other functions that show on OSD are for what the pilots/gunners RoA should be.

Yeah....I have it checked already. But possibly (like the track IR aiming and the gunners working properly) maybe I have to uncheck it and then re check it. I'll give that a try.

Thx for the idea.

FIXED FIXED FIXED

Ah ha!!! Zaelu, you were right, but it's like the track IR deal. You have to uncheck it, and then re check it for it to actually work.

Now my door gunner can concentrate on taking out his targets and not flying the AC.

Thanks for the input guys!!

Glad I read this thread. Finally be able to use the co-pilot for gunning without having to hold the cyclic with my left hand :-/

so to capitalise on this thread, is there a bank angle/speed radius/altitude chart for turning on autopilot? so one can fly exact circles and keep the lefty or the righty busy?

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.

You know, I'm not entirely sure of this. I know that if I set the autopilot to circle around my LZ or target, it seems to act kind of crazy and do what it wants to do. But I've seen videos where the auto pilot setting works flawlessly while you are using the door gunners. I am sure (as in many cases) that mine doesn't work right because of something that I'm doing wrong. :pilotfly:

Ok, maybe I'm weird but if I want to circle I just bank in the direction I want, and engage autopilot. It continues the orbit it that direction, at that bank angle. So if you are manually piloting a turn that is circling you perfectly around your target, you should already be good to go once AP is engaged. If you press l-control l-shift h, it shows you if the autopilot is in orbit or level mode. I think orbit is alt- a. Whenever I switch to gunners, autopilot auto engages in level or orbit mode.

I am sure that you are probably correct. But if you go to the controls menu, there are auto pilot options. One of them is auto circle. That's what I have tried to use while in the gunner's seat. Doesn't always work though.

what can be really helpful is having the F-10 map option of setting a turn radius over an area with speed and altitude. Like combined arms, but only autopilot related. Set the circle, adjust its radius, then exit. Now gunner can remain focused. In mountainous areas it can be redundant because of possibility of having a crash with mountains.
