Guest IguanaKing Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 Looks like it. The guy with the orange shirt though, his face doesn't look like that of a native Russian-speaker. Maybe the glasses and the mustache are covering up those facial features.

Guest IguanaKing Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 Not sure about that. I'm just going on what I learned while I lived in Russia. I learned facial structure from a friend of my former fiancee, her friend was a linguist who was a professor at St. Petersburg State University, in St. Petersburg, Russia (which is also where I lived for a few months). She taught me a rather interesting fact that facial structure was influenced by language, since the facial muscles develop differently in different areas of the face. Not going on prejudice or propaganda, bro...don't let the flag in my sig fool ya. ;) As I said, some of those features may have been covered up by his glasses and mustache. ;)

Guest IguanaKing Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 Thanks, Wags. :D I just hope everybody understands, I meant nothing prejudicial or nationalist by my earlier comment...it was just a scientific observation. Our facial muscles just develop differently when we speak different languages. I certainly couldn't have hoped to appear to be Russian while I was there, everybody KNEW I wasn't. I tried to speak, in Russian, to a guy I hitched a ride with once...and he immediately said, in English, "Oh...you speak English? Where are you from?". Heh...I guess my horrible pronunciation and accent gave me away. ;)

plug pray Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 Iguana, you are right. You know, even in a crowd, just if you see a face, you can immidiately recognise a foreigner. It's about everything, but, first of all, face. But even clothes are a bit different in something.
Guest IguanaKing Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 Yup...you're right. Its a bit more difficult in the US though, since foreigners are very much a part of our general population. My sister-in-law (Japanese) was once afraid to go anywhere in the US by herself...I told her "this is a country of immigrants, nobody will notice your appearance or your accent." Before...I never realized how language could affect the development of facial features among caucasians, but it does. Russians seem to have much stronger chins, just from proper pronunciation of Russian words, those muscles become more developed. I definitely didn't take offense to being immediately pegged as non-Russian when I lived there. It was actually pleasantly amusing to me...made me realize how much people can actually pay attention to detail.
Weta43 Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 I worked at Te Papa - (the national museum of NZ) for a while and I went into the (art, craft & jewellery) store there to talk to a friend. I asked how the day was going & they said great - that there was a foreign couple there spending up large - that they had accents, but she wasn't sure from where & pointed to a truly beautiful woman on the other side of the room & I said "she's Russian". & left. I bumped into someone just outside the door & started talking to them when the woman came out (apparently my friend went straight over & asked her if she was Russian, she said yes & asked how she guessed & she pointed me out standing just outside the door) & asked how I knew she was Russian - had I picked it from her accent ? - & I said that she just looked Russian - which she didn't believe & wasn't very pleased that I wouldn't tell her how I REALLY knew ... but yeah I agree - some nationalities have a way of holding their faces that gives them away ( like when I used to live with a french woman - you could tell the French from the Kiwi visitors at the alliance francaise just looking at them ) Cheers.
Guest IguanaKing Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 Heh...in the US I often recognize Russian women by how they dress. I just think of it this way...if she's dressed nicely, but much more so than the above-average, sophisticated, American woman, she's probably Russian. I can't lie...the Russian women definitely have it goin' on in the fashion department...and us guys DO notice. ;)
britgliderpilot Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 The chap in the front in the roll-neck looks he should have been in the 1930's RAF :P http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v121/britgliderpilot/BS2Britgliderpilot-1.jpg
Andrew_McP Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 More importantly, does anyone recognise that bit of coastline? :-) Andrew McP
Brit_Radar_Dude Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 If you have watched the VFTC summer 2004 aerobatic movie, then Han and maybe some of the others(?) are shown at the end of the movie. You can easily tell they are all Russian because every one of them looks miserable having their photo taken. I have no idea why this is, but all the Russian guys I know are just the same! [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Sorry Death, you lose! It was Professor Plum....
Guest IguanaKing Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 BGP is right...of course, he looks about 1930s pilot for ANY country. Mitch Hedberg on the turtle neck shirt "I can't wear a turtle neck. Wearing a turtle neck is like being strangled by a really weak guy. If you wear a turtle neck and a back-pack its like a weak midget tryin' to bring you down." Where the hell is Dennis Gage when we need him? That guy would confuse us all as to the country AND era of the photo. :D Andrew, nope, not particularly good with coastline shape geography. ;) BRD...if looking miserable when photographed is a qualification...then, I guess I'm Russian too. :D

Guest IguanaKing Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 do u hate american highways and traffic signs?))) If you do, you are closer to russian Nah...the highways and traffic signs are fine. Its the drivers I don't like much. Russian drivers seemed to be quite a bit better...fast and a bit crazy at times, but at least they were skillful. I LOVED driving there...nothing like being surrounded by people who weren't afraid of their cars. :D
