Hello fellow Tomcat enthusiasts. I'm curious as to the degree of interest in a 30th Anniversary livery pack for the DCS F-14A - should Leatherneck consider such a thing for shortly after the F-14's release?

For me, I'm not that interested in the fictitious F-14 squadrons featured in the movie, such as this (though I don't mind):

My real interest is in the Pacific fleet squadrons that helped to make the movie.

This picture shows VF-111 (without shark mouths) and VF-51. The other squadrons that directly contributed were VF-114 and VF-213 (for the carrier scenes filmed on USS Enterprise). VF-1 also popped up a bit (Tomcat take-off on the Goose-death hop).

More classic VF-111 from the same time frame. One bonus is that VF-51 and VF-111 deployed on USS Carl Vinson (Nimitz class - in line with ED's carrier plans).

For me, the fact is that Top Gun was just about the only F-14 and aviation footage that I could easily see growing up (outside of airshows). It was the 80s, well before youtube, etc - there were no real opportunities to see Tomcat footage outside of Top Gun. As a result, the look of the those Tomcats means A LOT to me - it defines the operational appearance of the F-14A!

Would a livery pack with ~5-10 Tomcat liveries from these squadrons and perhaps a few F-5 liveries sell? Or would it add little to the experience?

When the Aerosoft F-14 was released, Top Gun liveries were among the most requested - is this a market worth exploring?

What does everyone think?

Best,

Nick

PS - Yes, I am trying to occupy myself till LNS "bombards us with media" - this makes the time go a bit faster. :)

I'm pretty sure many of these will simply be in the initial build. Officially we slim down the number of liveries to ensure we meet the advertised goals; but our love for the Tomcat knows no bounds, so

I would expect way more to be available eventually. I personally really like that fictitious squadron logo though. :)

I grew up on Top Gun ( & Tora Tora Tora, Midway and Battle of Britain) and as silly as it may sound; Mavericks'/Icemans/Hollywoods' helmets etc. evoke instant feelings of great nostalgia.

Perhaps we will even include those as options for the pilot, even if fictitious as well. (amongst many other helmet variations)

We won't charge for liveries.

As usual, all of that sounds excellent!

I also grew up on the same media, especially Top Gun and Midway. The sight of TPS gray Tomcats and Top Gun footage is also VERY nostalgic for me. It is still some of the best available Tomcat footage even today (the opening scene of the TF30's afterburners staging up on the cat still gives me goosebumps :)). As such I am hoping that several of the included or subsequently available liveries closely resemble those Tomcats that I've been watching for nearly 30 years now (Wow, there is pretty much nothing else that I am still interested in that started 30 years ago!).

I'm hoping that there are a few West Coast (OK...and maybe a few East Coast ;)) regular F-14 fleet liveries like those Tomcats used for filming Top Gun. I think the Tomcat looks great in those schemes as well. I like the Hi-Viz stuff too, but the Tomcat really "looks right" in grey to my eyes. :)

Of course, most of the MiG-21 liveries are seem to be regular "line birds" and the fictitious "Northeria" scheme is composed of three different grey tones that look awfully familiar :D

Thank you for the response Cobra. I am also a fan of the logo ("though I don't mind" is underplaying things a bit).

Of course, the design of that emblem is from VFA-25, but if you find a good quality photo you can see that it has a different squadron code..........VF-213

(Check page 159 in the book "Bye Bye Baby" - it's pretty easy to read in that photo):)

Like many of us, I can't wait to see the 3D model with some textures on it.

Have a good night,

You're the best!

My dream is that, one day, every last livery will be available for every era of a squadron that operated the Tomcat!

I'd much rather see the aircraft fly and then worry about what color to paint it.
