As topic says, is it possible to have the flat shadows color the same as non-flat shadows?

With the latter, ground shadows look as a continuation of the aircraft self shadowing. With flat shadows as they are now, the illusion isn't there.

Please take a look at the screens to see the difference:

I think your first picture actually looks more realistic: IRL you never see solid black shadows outside (and only rarely inside) because ambient scatter, both atmospheric and from other surfaces, provides enough lighting to tint the shadow a different shade.

I don't really see difference in the shadowing more than the color... Back in the DX8 days the difference between a volumetric shadow and a flat shadow was huge where a flat shadowed object didn't cast shadows on itself or self shadowing

My rig specs:

Intel Core i7 4770 @3.4Ghz // Corsair 16GB DDR3 // MoBo Asus Z87K // HDD 1TB 7200RPM // eVGA Nvidia GTX 760GT 2GB DDR5 // LG 3D 47" 1920x1080 // Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS // Saitek Combat Pro Pedals // Thrustmaster MFD Cougar pack // PS3 Eye + FTNOIR
