I'm not sure if this has been stated elsewhere, (I could not find any info) When the Channel Map is released, will there be anything stopping us from flying modern aircraft in it?

If they only go with historical airfields, that's an unqualified "YES". The airfields of the period are not long enough to support modern aircraft, and in many cases were not paved, or if paved, not hardened to bear the weight of modern aircraft.

Now, if ED is smart, they will put the airfields onto the map as the very last step of making the map, and will make a variant where the tiny grass fields are replaced with modern length, paved fields, so there will be a variant that can be used with modern aircraft.

Why?

It'll be populated with 1944 buildings, and meant for WW2 aircraft. Why then put modern facilities in the map when they simply didn't exist at the time to be portrayed?

If it is meant to represent a WW2 war zone, then it ought to have purely WW2 vintage facilities, whether or not modern aircraft can operate out of them.

If however you want the European region covered as a modern era theatre too, then I wouldn't expect it soon, and I wouldn't expect to get it as part of the 1944 Normandy package. I would like to see it covered though, in the 1970s/80s period preferably.

The Su25 should be able to operate from such airfields I think. Maybe not in full load but operable.

I don't understand anything in russian except Davai Davai!

The "why" is simple: so players have additional variety on where they can fly. They currently fly WW2 missions over a modern Caucasus map and have plenty of fun doing so; why would modern aircraft over a 1940s map be out of the question, other than the limitations of airstrip length?

If ED went truly all-out, they could even write a replacement script where 1940s-style buildings were one-for-one replaced with more modern-looking structures. It would, of course, not be an accurate modern map, as building density would be too low, but seriously, do you need a Google-Street-View level of real-world precision to enjoy the simulation?

quick search: B-17 takeoff run, 3400 feet. Su25 takeoff run, 1200 meters. So... maybe from the heavy bomber airfields... but just barely. Certainly not from the fighter fields. Still the exception, rather than the rule; any of the high-performance modern aircraft need more runway; particularly for landings. Good luck with the MiG21 =P

Didn't they use mostly grass fields? Not sure Uncle Sam is going to want his F-18 landing in a muddy field while stopping the invasion of illegals.

It's going to be interesting to see ED's approach to era based maps.

I suspect it'll just be "the map" and that's it, and if there's multiple eras it'll be two seperate maps.

It would be quite nice if variations of maps can be supported rather than having multiple installs of the same geometry though if DCS ever gets to a stage where having some sort of time period slider becomes viable.

I think most future maps will be more modern 60's to current given some of the maps that have been announced. It would nice to give more modern planes the ability to fly with this map and their isn't a lot of modern bases in that region.

My thought is, that most of the WW2 era buildings are still there. 3/4 of the AIRFIELDS have disappeared, but then again they were grass, so they blend into the countryside anyway. In the case of the larger paved bomber fields, some of those made the cut, and still survive today. I don't think it is too much of a stretch to think the base map can just have more objects added to it to become a modern era map.

Think along the lines of the ORBX scenery configurator. A separate interface that plugs in and out scenery objects as needed for your particular mission at hand. That would make a great little app actually. A "Time Machine Clock" where you could roll back the date, and it would automatically pull newer objects out of the mission planner. Then the only items available for use would be period pieces. -Woog

A-10s can also operate from unpaved ground:

DCS Panavia Tornado (IDS) really needs to be a thing!
