tordillo Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 I am aware that the distance of the threats showed on the RWR doesn´t have relation with the threat on the field actual distance, but with the priority of the threat. So, do you have any way of using the RWR information to find the threats on the field other than its direction in relation to me?
MasterZelgadis Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 You can triangulate the position of a SAM using the RWR and creation of very distant waypoints. Didn't do it myself, but there is a video on youtube showing that technique "Sieh nur, wie majestätisch du durch die Luft segelst. Wie ein Adler. Ein fetter Adler." http://www.space-view.net

QuiGon Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Isn't the distance related to the amount of energy sensed by the RWR? AFAIK, yes, to some degree. But that only provides a very rough estimation. You can put the radar signal at your 12 o'clock and start searching in that direction with your TGP, but that will seldom work out. The only procedure precise enough to find radar emitters with your RWR is triangulation like MasterZelgadis said. Intel i7-12700K @ 8x5GHz+4x3.8GHz + 32 GB DDR5 RAM + Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 (8 GB VRAM) + M.2 SSD + Windows 10 64Bit DCS Panavia Tornado (IDS) really needs to be a thing!
tordillo Posted January 20, 2016 Author Posted January 20, 2016 (edited) Hi everybody, thanks for your recomendations, the video is very instructive. Now I have a few questions more: 1- The RWR only detects radar threats, right? 2- If I have an air defense position, like the SA-11, wich has one Target Acquisition Radar and two rocket launchers, would destroying the radar be enough to put out the complete system? MasterZelgadis Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 Should work in most situations. But I don't know whether they are able to shoot on sight if you get too close.. The real one can do that (iirc), but I don't know whether it is simulated "Sieh nur, wie majestätisch du durch die Luft segelst. Wie ein Adler. Ein fetter Adler." http://www.space-view.net

Ad 1 - yes. It won't detect the IR launchers. As 2 - depends on the SAM. SA-11 does have a tracking radar built on the launcher, so it will still be able to shoot, albeit from smaller range than with the TAR. You need to check the description of different systems to get an answer for that. For more information, please visit my website. Gliptal Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 Keep in mind the RWR won't detect IR threats, but the MWS will detect them.
