FS2004 has everything for a complete nub to start his adventure with flight simulators:

Interactive trainings and checkrides with instructor

Complete in-game manual and knowledge base explaining everything as simply as possible

Very good 3rd party addons/plug-ins support

I doubt about the AF sales figures, they seem very low.

Yeah! I had been thinking the same for a moment. But then I though that I'm not the belly button of the world :D and this can be wrong becouse I like it. Many people can't stand awful graphic and primal flight dynamics of AF. It was something when F4 had just been realesed.

Besides think about real numbers - stolen copies... Don't count mine. I got only originals :smilewink: .

I doubt those figures are right - maybe that is how many it sold in the US in the first year or so.

Lockon did very well for such a high end product. I guess these 51.000 US Lockon buyers are a good market for the F-16 vs Mig29SMT project. I cannot imagine BS can address such a large market, except maybe in CIS. They'ld better not wait to long for their sequel *fighter* project or this market is gone.

For people who are really interested in aviation there are no frontiers.

Advert is the subject. ADVERTISING IS LEVERAGE OF THE COMMERCE!

I would rather point to other very different factors.

Microsoft is an american software giant and the data exposed on this page is about sales in the US.

Microsoft has alot more investiment made, a broad marketing reach, and provides easy access to custumer support.

ED is a russian company, and lets face it, that alone does not do anything to promote the product if the people who made it are not known in a market where 90% of the people are not flight SIM "connaiseurs".

Miscrososft sold alot more also due to another aspect, it had more units to sell, I remenber well how LOMAC ran out of the shelves all too quicly taking weeks to return if at all. It sold for about a month here and then it was over. I can still find MS combat SIM 3 at stores!

True. Even in Europe, this is the case. FS2004 is always available in 2 or 3 stores in my neighbourhood. Lockon has been twice, the second at reduced price, for a week or two. FC I had to order online, Lockon Gold I ordered through a distributor online. For WOV it was even worse: I had to order it and get it shipped directly from the states. F4:AF was never in the stores here, I had to order it online also.

The only other title readily available was the IL2-series, that I always could find everywhere.

People, we are talking the MSFS... it's the blody Windows of the flight sim world :D what else is there to say

Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.

Yeah I agree with Pilotasso. Its not only the features of MSFS that makes it popular. The marketing around it is huge, the MSFS community in the web is amazing. And dont forget MSFS has been around for like 15-20 years or so and it has become a reference for flight sims. Anyone completely new to flight sims and wants to know more, google for it will inevitably end up with the ideia that there is MSFS and little more.

Personally Im dissapointed with MSFS, but thats another story (and my personal opinion only)

I noticed the same thing as Pilotasso, we live in the same place (sim tb sou alfacinha :-) and only got a glimpse of Lockon at the stores, and it was a late arrival I got a copy of Lockon from an online store a couple of months before it was available here. I dont remember finding IL2 immediately when it was released. Falcon4.0 never saw it. But you can find tons of MSFS stuff both in local and online stores.

Makes me think.........if 51000 copies sold of lockon.....and its generally thought of as a "serious" sim/game

I sort of assumed most "serious" simmers have internet access and would visit at least one of the online communities(maybe im wrong here)

..Now...no way is there even 10,000 users on all the forums I know of...that would mean that a very large proportion of sales went to the "Casual" buyer

I dunno

oo err...missus:animals_bunny:

LOL!:megalol: Now, that's funny...

Working as a professional pilot IRL, MSFS is outstanding as far as its scope and depth. The "simulation" part leaves a lot to be desired however!

(Sort of like Windows now that you brought it up!)

Exactly what I think of it! :) MSFS these days is great to fly airliners with autopilot on.

Buuut if you fly low and want to feel the airplane, the flight dynamics dissapoint. The airplanes behave as they are on rails. And even using the virtual cockpit it doesnt give you the feeling of being "in there" as lockon gives.

There are some great aircraft designers that make excellent freeware airplanes, like the F16 from Kirk Olsson, but inevitably they stop at MSFS limitations.

You are pretty much talking about the flight model right? It's a flaw of FS2004, that's a fact. Only best commercial addons somehow improved that area.

Then why so many people bought it?

OK. Take the situation where we turned up. I may say right now that this numbers and differences return after releasing BS and FSX. We have regular update from Microsoft about developing MSFS. From ED there is little info in any sim/gaming magazines. How many people out of community reach here? We can read about BS only here and http://lockon.ru. Also publition of LockOn needs good planning. Starforce helped much but won't stand ED in good stead.

I pretty much agree. If Eagle Dynamics want to create some hype around their product they should give some preview version of Black Shark to Gamespot and some other online magazines like this.

Can you imagine that Gamespot never reviewed Flaming Cliffs? WTF? It's ED's problem to contact reviewers on that site, not the other way around.

In my neighbourhood you can still find a copy of Lock On on the shelf.

It's still available in EB Games or Compusa and at one point you could even find a copy of F4:AF and WOV, but that was right after they were released, and have since disappeared..

As far as MS2004 there was a very nice add running on regular TV channels in '04 ..
