WelshZeCorgi Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 If there is one thing I've noticed, it's that the AI wingmen have x-ray 20/10 eyesight, able to see mortars at 2km in the dead of night. Not only that, even in the dead of night, I was unable to find these mortars by the muzzle flashes... there were none, even when I did a low pass flyby. just a miniscule puff of smoke that gives no flash. I'm just wondering how do you find artillery in this game, or any hidden ground forces, especially mortars which are a bit prolific in the Enemy Within Campaign? Do you fly high and use the TGP to scour the area? Do you just fly low and slow and try to make contact visually? Even if the risk of AAA or MANPADS is high?
Xavven Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 I bind my TrackIR Z-axis to zoom to simulate the use of binoculars. Not sure if that's considered cheesy or cheating, but there are many ways to give yourself a cheesy advantage: Use of labels Use of wingman AI Use of model enlargement Use of F10 map showing enemy locations It robs you of a big part of the sim to use those, since finding targets is half the battle or more. I guess the "legitimate" ways of finding targets is through JTAC, MK-1 Eyeball, or TGP. You really ought to have a good idea of where the target is hiding before you pull out the TGP, though, or you'll be looking for a looooong time. There's also triangulation with the RWR if you're up against a radar-using AAA or SAM. And lastly, my favorite, is flying low enough to bait AAA and SAM fire while a teammate watches for tracers and smoke. Doesn't work for artillery, though. Requirements: A deathwish A titanium bathtub A clean second pair of pants
Mike68 Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 Sometimes I use my wingman to find targets for me. I'm using his Hawkeye capabilities by ordering him to attack targets, then I start to watch the TAD. He will broadcast his SPI on target he is attacking. Then I pick up his SPI with markpoint, and order him to rejoin. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Cik Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 you're hunting artillery and you don't have a JTAC? what evil creature gave you that mission?
baltic_dragon Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 I always though mortars were quite easy to find, as they have quite a visible smoke mark whenever they shoot - of course provided you are not too high and you know the general area where to look for them. But true that there are no muzzle flashes, which is a bit weird I guess... For more information, please visit my website. Kilo Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 But true that there are no muzzle flashes, which is a bit weird I guess... That's a general bug. Any gun bigger than small arms has no muzzle flash :noexpression:  Все буде добре
Cik Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 ah, if you're talking about scramble the mortars are actually pretty easy to find. get shot at by the MANPAD next to them, then put 600 rounds around the smoke. got 'em
WelshZeCorgi Posted March 7, 2016 Author Posted March 7, 2016 ah, if you're talking about scramble the mortars are actually pretty easy to find. get shot at by the MANPAD next to them, then put 600 rounds around the smoke. got 'em It was "The Storm Before The Calm", the situation being that it was night, complete overcast clouds, and after destroying 6 stolen military vehicles ranging from tanks to bmps and 1 sa-19, a distress call from a nearby radar installation forces you to power to the Arminian border, where the base seemingly was under some sort of artillery attack. Looked everywhere with the tgp, put on my NVGs and flew low level around the hill, and eventually gave up and called my wingman to go weapons free, where he gave me the location of the mortars through the TDC. It was about 2 km SW of the installation, and I was sort of surprised how well "hidden" it was, despite being in the open ground firing relentlessly. I turned in the radio to the prescribed 35FM, which the mission commander said was the freq the radar install was on but never got any transmission from them. What was really cool was that the first time I played that mission, I didn't get that order and that sort of randomized variety was pretty damn cool.
WelshZeCorgi Posted March 7, 2016 Author Posted March 7, 2016 However, I must admit that the all-seeing-AI is a bit of a spoiler when it comes to the points of the campaign where you're supposed to be "surprised", the second mission you were supposed to fly to Tbilisi to boost the population's moral didn't have the same suckerpunch feeling when your wingman calls the enemy MANPAD 30 seconds before it actually shoots at you.

That is a bug and will be fixed, the MANPAD should be set as invisible. I am pretty sure that I had it set up that way before, perhaps something got messed up during one of the DCS updates. It is in the campaign bugtracker. Still, yeah, your wingman being able to spot a single guy hidden in the forest or bushes from 5 miles away.. :) For more information, please visit my website.
