How will I know if locked on by other aircraft? Does it work the same way as it does with radar stations? Do the symbols change in the RWR once you are locked on? Also, what if it's an air to air heat seeking missile? Will there be no warning for these missiles?

RWR detects radiation emitted by the radars, it does not have IFF check, so it will not tell you if it's friendly aircraft or an enemy. But it does identify the signature, it tells what aircraft is, model, depending on the SAM, AAA, airborne target etc.

The Heat seeking missile is a bit different, the MWS (Missile Warning System) will do the job of telling you if there's a missile behind you, basically it is a sensor with a thermal camera, it "sees" the missile and all that information goes to CMSP (Countermeasures Signal Processor), it will process the information received from RWR/MWS and tell you what is going on, this case the MWS sees the missile and you'll hear a sound, also you can see "M" on RWR display.

When an aircraft is locking you, the AN/ALR-69 will tell you, with a sound and symbols that you can see on RWR.

I would recommend you to study a bit and learn the symbology.

(basic explanation, it is so much complex.)

I finally learned, last week, that when the RWR beeps and a diamond-29 is showing on it, the time to turn 180° is NOW.

Great explanation!

Just an addition: the MWS doesn't determine where a missile is pointed. It'll often happen that it goes off when the wingman fires a Mav at a ground target, or an Apache not too far away shoots a Hellfire.

I've had situations where I've been blown out of the sky because I ignored the warning, assuming it was nothing to worry about, and other situations where I expanded half my flares until I realized ground units were firing TOWs or HOTs or something like that at each other.

When on MP, everyone should always, I mean capital ALWAYS announce their missile launches as "Rifle" (Maverick) or "Fox $whatever" (AAM) over radio/TeamSpeak before (or as soon as) they mesh that button, or their own guys will quickly hate them. :D

Finally, the only thing I believe to know for certain about the whole RWR/MWS is that it's still classified, and what we get in DCS is an approximation at best. People who know the real thing hint that it's much more capable, but that's as far as anyone is willing to go in public (I guess they value the not being in jail part). ;)
