If those of you that have the Rift CV1 and have it working to your satisfaction, I would like to know if the CV1 is "upgradable" when the improvements do start to come out? Let's say Oculus comes out with the CV2, then will the current CV1's be able to utilize the improvements or would one be required to purchase another whole Rift to get the improvements? Not ready to make the investment YET, but am seriously looking at the technology. Tend to shy away from first release products and wait for some refinement. Appreciate any feedback.

the screens would have very little wiggle room for higher resolution due to the Mipi Chip (TC358870XBG)

Mipi Specs:

3840x2160x30Hz @ 8 bpp

Standard: HDMI® 1.4b to MIPI® DSI 1.1

Pixel rate: 248,83 MHz

Uncompressed bitrate: 5,97 Gbps (standard SI-units)

= 746,50 MB/s

5,6 Gibps (1024-based)

(rgb444, 8 bits/comp, 30fps)

Rift CV1 Uses:

2160x1200x90Hz @ 8bpp

Pixel rate: 233,28 MHz

Uncompressed bitrate: 5,60 Gbps (standard SI-units)

= 699,84 MB/s

5,2 Gibps (1024-based)

(rgb444, 8 bits/comp, 90fps)

Windows 10 Pro, Ryzen 2700X @ 4.6Ghz, 32GB DDR4-3200 GSkill (F4-3200C16D-16GTZR x2),

Thanks for the response Skate. I will take that as a affirmative as regards needing to purchase any newer iteration of that technology as opposed to being able to upgrade the current. Think I'll wait.

OSVR is open source. Right now using 1920x1080 440PPI 120Hz with same MIPI board.

But...

As this is open source there is group of people start project to upgrade to 4K 5.5" 800PPI 60Hz based on some new Toshiba chip set direct on Display Port for better performance in 4K. Lots of GPU dont have HDMI capable run 4K on more than 30Hz but DP is capable.

There is also discussion to upgrade on 2560x1440 530PPI using existing MIPI board what will be only screen upgrade for around 50$.

With such upgrade OSVR will be superior to OR/Vive and just to mention price of OSVR is 300$ now and have better performance than DK2.

I know, I know!

Just don't try one while waiting...I can't go back to 2D now.

I have purposely stayed away from trying them at this point as what with limited funds, I don't want to purchase ANY technology only to have it be "yesterday's technology" in a couple of months.:( And with reading all the power demands to run VR even with today's iteration, there is always going to be another, more powerful gadget to get us to ValHalla. Not sure I can stand the $$$ costs of pursuing this new technology.

In this field, the day we buy it, it's out of date. Your CPU is out of date by, what, two gen? If Rift doesn't update it for 18 more months, that's time lost.

But if you're balancing your budget, then I wouldn't consider this a "must have" AS LONG AS YOU NEVER try it. So even if you're tempted, don't try it.

"In this field, the day we buy it, it's out of date." That's been pretty much true since I began with an Atari computer decades ago, and it's still applicable today as you noted. But what has changed significantly, is the costs that come with all this new technology. Not everyone can afford to stay on the bleeding edge of tech no matter how much we would like to. If you can, then good for you. Pretty obvious from everything I've read regarding VR currently, it is still in it's infancy and the changes will probably comes fast and furious as they do with CPU's, Graphics cards, MB's, etc. It is a circumstance driven by competition and we the consumer benefit from that competition as long as it's within our budgetary limitations. I can currently enjoy DCSW quite well on my 4K monitor, so see no value in making the leap just yet.

And you'd be 100% right. But as I said, do not try VR until you feel like it's ready. Otherwise, you'll probably shell out for VR! :)

Just one more thing. Since the dawn of time, the computer I *wanted* was always $3,000 or more. It was true with TRS-80, Austin 286-16, Compaq 386, Thinkpad, you name it. Good time to be in technology, that's for sure.

Thing I'm most surprised by is its not all that popular nor useful outside of the flightsim milsim communities from what I have observed since release. Hate to say it but I don't think things will get super popular and progress ridiculously fast until the console crowd is in it unfortunately.

I think it's the ultimate flight training tool and also will be nice when something like arma 3 has it integrated as well as dcs is looking.

Yeah, you're probably right. The $$$'s are vastly different for console vs computers. But then again, as long as ED supports VR, I'll get my fix! :)

And for all those that want "true immersion" I can't imagine doing it for a FPS. Running round like that will get you dog-tired in minutes. For the ArmA guys, they should make 50lb rucks and 15 pound LBEs and 10 pounds of ammo bearer rig to lug around! LOL. God I hated 3 second rushes.
