Well I would think if you can't walk around and sitdown in your own pit with eyes closed then that's a bigger problem you may have coordination disabilities. Either way the forward looking camera helps with that correct Vive users?

That is why the camera on the Vive is so useful. Sure it breaks any immersion but only briefly. All you have to do is to press the system button on a controller (if they are at hand) which will show a colour low res screen alongside the controller or more probably whilst in DCS, a double press of the left side button on the HMD will bring up the full "Tron View"

Tron view is incredibly limited. It doesn't pick up small things that well. And the mini-camera doesn't work once you fire up DCS. I was hoping to use it for interacting with cockpits etc., but I could not activate the forward facing camera once DCS started up.

And how exactly does that help with safety concerns when in VR?

If you have to remove the headgear to get seated, then what precisely is the point of room sized VR?

Comments like that just make no sense at all!

It's pretty hard to walk around with the cables (substantial one at that) connected to the HMD. So I think the cable presents a bigger problem than anything else.

That's good to know I imagine it could be changed via software someday. Or maybe game developer incorporate it.....ED?

Of course does the keyboard, mouse and your HOTAS work while you have the vive on. How else would someone be able to fly if the controllers wouldn't work.

If you google that, you'll get the phone book of people complaining about not being able to use the keyboard while the Vive is engaged. Now that I've read more, I've found that they are specifically talking about a virtual keyboard IN the Vive environment, but it's easy to mistake that for the actual KB/mouse being disengaged for some reason.

Google this - using keyboard with HTC vive on

The first several results all made it seem that the kb/mouse weren't working, hence the question for clarification. It's not obvious - at all.

Well I don't know what is different with your setup vs mine but I can definitely use the camera whilst in DCS I have tested it on 1.5, 1.54 Beta and 2.02. You must, of course, have it enabled in the Camera settings of SteamVR specifically the "Allow Camera For Room View (System Button Double Click) It is then selectable with a double press of the "System Button" on either of the controllers, (if you have them turned on) or more usefully, the one on the left side of the HMD.

I've tried taking a pic through the HMD eyepiece to show it with my Iphone but it's difficult and doesn't look very good, but it certainly works very well.

It works well enough that it makes typing easy in things like Elite Dangerous Galaxy map, when entering a Star System in the index.

My front one was about 4 feet at 11 O'clock. And the rear one was 3-4 feet at 5 O'clock. I didn't walk around or anything but had zero issues in DCS.

Ah, wonder if it came with one of the updates. Mine was 3 months ago already.

Thanks again for all the answers/info. Found out a lot - cameras, the Vive room cam working in DCS, keyboard/mouse working - lots of stuff, thank you very much, I appreciate it.

Both of my units arrived today. I'd ordered my Rift on Wednesday last week, the Vive on Friday. NO emails other than the first confirmation were forthcoming from HTC, nor does the order show anything but "processing still" when I check the order number they gave me in the final email I got from them. Even after repeated emails to their customer service - nothing yet. I didn't worry because I'd just ordered it 3 business days ago + weekend.

8 am courier is banging on the door, I see the large box, and think "wow, if guys are saying the Vive's box is way bigger than the Rift, I wonder just how big the Vive box will be", expecting the Rift as it was out for delivery. It was the Vive - wth? Still no changes in my order - I should cancel it since it says "in process" and get a refund, and keep this mysterious box - j/k.

Rift came this afternoon. Rift = much easier to set up, Vive, a bit of work but no big deal. Very impressed with early fooling around. DCS tomorrow!

Thanks to everyone for all the help in this subforum and for answering what must seem like noob questions - I just decided screw it, I'm getting both, so I can use whichever is optimal with whatever game/sim I choose.
