I'm quite new to the Mig-21, and I've noticed that my R13M1 and R60M do very little damage to enemy aircraft. It usually takes at least 2 rockets to take down an A-10, C-130, B-52 or KC-135, so they don't really appear to be really effective to me. I haven't tried out the other missiles yet. Is that realistic behaviour or just a damage model bug? :joystick:

R-60 is a bit weak on the warhead, but R13M1 should have a pretty decent warhead as far as I know.

Wishlist: F-4E Block 53 +, MiG-27K, Su-17M3 or M4, AH-1F or W circa 80s or early 90s, J35 Draken, Kfir C7, Mirage III/V

Yup... R-60's are known for their small warhead... But the R-13's shouls be a one punch knock out...

But despite all this, I doubt that a single R-60 or R-60M is as weak IRL as it is in DCS. I think that they should be more than enough to bring down a fighter (but not a bomber or a bigger aircraft), which doesn't happen in most of the cases in DCS.

So maybe the R-60's and R-60M's need some tweaking...

There is an unconfirmed story that in ye olde 80s, a Syrian MiG-21Bis hitting an Israeli F-15 with R-60, but Eagle going it's merry way to airbase and landing safely. It was listed on acig.org too but again as unconfirmed.

A more credible example would be a case where a South African Mirage F-1 got hit in a close range dogfight with a MiG-23. Mirage pilot even has a first hand description of events in his personal website I've seen a year ago or so. It was a head on shot (which our DCS R-60M can't pull off). Mirage was still able to fly back to base and do a forced landing but, ejection seat accidentallly fired, leading to injuries on Mirage pilot, which left him unable to walk again. Apparently years later he has found and met with the MiG-23 pilot too. I'll try to dig up the links to it.

All these are either tough too shoot down aiframes or really big for such small warhead. These can survive hits even from bigger missiles or SAMs. The A-10 is an attack aircraft able to sustain lots of damage from ground and air. and the others are just to big. There is nothing wrong with the missiles.

The R-60M has a warhead that is only slightly more powerful then some Manpads.

It has a very small warhead when it comes to Air-Air missiles.

its only a 3-3.5 kg warhead (depending on version)

Where as the R-73 has a 7.4 kg warhead and the Aim-9s warhead is even larger.

Where as manpads range from 1.5-3 Kg.

Here's a link of Mirage F-1 vs MiG-23 incident I spoke of :

http://aircraftnut.blogspot.com.tr/2013/03/saaf-mirage-f1-and-border-conflict-part.html

From the words of Mirage pilot, we read how he was hit by what most likely is a R-60, and how his emergency landing went awry, leading his permament confinement to wheelchair. Situation sounds like a near miss by the missile, and Mirage's warning lights didn't even came up until several mintues of flight and maneuvering after the hit. Pilot does not specificaly mention R-60 himself though, but still given it is a close dogfight situation, and missile's warhead haven't been enough for a direct destruction of aircraft, R-60 sounds the most likely candidate.

Mirage pilot's own website seems to be offline, and wayback machine shows a post from early 2015 which states he was trying to organize a flight together with the MiG pilot who hit his aircraft.

Edit : I was wrong, not late but early 2015, here's wayback machine link :
