Quick quick question: when you're assigning an AI unit in the mission editor to FAC and point a laser onto another unit, how can you change the laser code? i'm asking so i'll know which code to set for the GBU in the F-5E.

thanks!

As far as I know there's no option to set the laser code the AI uses via the GUI. It defaults to 1688.

I remember ciribobs script for autolasing JTACs had an option to specify a laser code, might be worth a look.

ah, bummer. but thanks that clears things up, i'll check out the script you mentioned. do you know if i set the F-5E laser code to 1688, will the GBU guidance work then?

It should (if you can drop the bomb so it sees the laser reflection from the target). Furthermore, isn't the F-5s laser code set to 1688 right from the start? It's kinda the default lasercode for everything ;)

nope, at least for me it defaults to 1112. i don't have the A-10C so lasing is a new thing for me so absolutely could be doing it wrong.

however i did see in another post the mention of 1688, so i did set up a quick ME mission with AI lasing and 1688 plugged into my ship, dropped the GBU within about 2nm, but didn't notice any guidance. bomb just fell in a regular trajectory.

As I said: you have to make sure your bomb will actually see the laser reflection when it drops. This can be really tricky. If you fly in a way that your target will be between you and the JTAC, then your chances minify.

At least this is what I found out in my few tests.

And just to make sure: you do actually tell the JTAC to lase, don't you? :)

 i thought they just began lasing when the mission began...

i did try to contact them but they are on default 30MHz FM (i think) and i did not see a way to set the radio in the F-5E to a station that low. ugh i'm not sure i'm meant to play with lasers...

forward air controller. in game you can use it to have AI units lase or IR point to targets for guided munitions by using advanced waypoint options. may have other uses i'm unaware of.

i finally got it to work, many thanks. had to do two things:

1) change FAC frequency to something over 100MHz (F-5E radio can't go lower AFAIK)

2) change FAC modulation to AM

Forward Air Controller or if in an Airplane known as AFAC - Airborne Forward Air Controller. Also known as JTAC - Joint Terminal Attack Controller.

In laymans terms describes a guy, that is qualified to tell an aircraft where to drop bombs without killing the own troops. ;)

Depending on branch of armed forces, country or moon calendar these and other terms are used, and there are differences in procedure skills and responsibilities...

In NATO it has been standardized with the FAC qualification, precise procedures like the 9-line and other things.

Now that's what I would call energy waste :D

"Oh, there's a striker coming in in about half an hour, better turn on that laser!"

Glad you figured it all out!

lol yea totally forgot its not just a pocket laser pointer. "why didn't you bring more AA batteries!?"
