Noob needs gas

Hello everyone,

 

I'm super new to DCS, and have only been flying the f15 and the a10a, but I already love this game. I'm flying in dcs 1.5, and I would love to attempt a mid air refuel. How, where, are the tankers?

There need to be tankers in the mission you play. I think there is a air refueling training mission and you can also set up your own mission with the mission editor and include a tanker.

Go to the mission editor, add your aircraft and remember to set kneeboard t to player controlled. Add a tanker and give it a waypoint to fly straight for as long as you need it to. Thats all you need mision-wise.

 

When you are airborne, there is a category in the radio menu for tankers. Ask the tanker for a permission for pre-contact, move to close formation and report ready. After this the tanker gives you fuel when the boom connects.

 

One thing to remember is, that you need to open the refuelling nozzle before contact. Otherwise the fuel has nowhere to go. In the F-15 this is indicated by a green "Ready"-light on the canopy arch. I don't remember what the indication is for the A-10A unfortunately.

 

Then just practice. One advice though, don't chase the boom. Fly the refuelling formation with the tanker. There are indicator lights on the belly of the KC-135 to help with the position. The boom operator will drive the boom to the correct place when you maintain correct position.

I just tried AAR with A-10C yesterday. (I am new too BTW, so big WELCOME HoYa). Tanker AI seems off I think. In terms it is not doing its job, you kind of need to fly your receiver into the boom and all videos I watched it is other way around...

Tanker is broken at the moment.

It is possible to tank, even to the point where it is rather easy once you get used to it, but it is much harder than it should be and not realistic.

We can only hope for a fix soon.

 

EDIT: Of course you can try regardless of that. If you make it it is a nice "hard mode" training. Once the behaviour is fixed you will be able to refuel with ease.
