mrsteel Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 So, i am not too familiar with this aircraft, and from what i've seen it will mostly be like a more advanced f5 in the fact that it carries mainly air to surface weaponry. Now, i realize there are people with much more knowledge of this plane, and i am wondering, does the AJS carry any medium range air to air missiles? Or just Swedish versions of the aim9?
Kelevra9987 Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 AFAIK the AJS-37 only have the Sidewinder. The fighter variant of it, the JA-37 would have SARH Missiles. Modules: Well... all of 'em ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Motherboard: ASUS Maximus VIII Hero | CPU: i7-6700K @ 4.6GHz | RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengance LPX DDR4 | GPU: GTX TITAN X (Maxwell) | SSD1: 256GB NVMe SSD System | SSD2: 250GB Games | HDD 4TB WD Red
il_corleone Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 Well, the main role of the aircaft is ground strike but if there are not interceptors availible, they could send an AJS37 with 6 sidewinders, using his radar alongside the GCI to intercept the bandits (Bombers or helicopters) In the case you are chased, you can always run away but you can also defend yourself with more chances of survival than in a F5, using the massive speed but as always, is not recommended. Anyawy, if you can bring down an F15 with a 21, you can always take down a Su-27 with a Viggen no probs if you stay hidden but thats not your role.
WinterH Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 AJS37 is the strike version, can carry 6 Sidewinder equivalents. It's radar has a relatively rudimentary air to air mode. However, it is a good low level supersonic strike aircraft, and a good anti ship strike aircraft. It's radar has ground mapping capability, as well as ability to spot large targets like ships and buildings etc. So it is both very different, and much more than F-5. JA37 is the interceptor variant, and depending on version may even carry AIM-120, but it is not the type the module will depict. Wishlist: F-4E Block 53 +, MiG-27K, Su-17M3 or M4, AH-1F or W circa 80s or early 90s, J35 Draken, Kfir C7, Mirage III/V DCS-Dismounts Script

It's really not a more advanced F-5. They are completly different aircraft, with the F-5 beeing a fighter and the Viggen beeing a striker. We don't have a fast strike aircraft in DCS yet, so it will be something completly new for us. AFAIK the AJS-37 only have the Sidewinder. The fighter variant of it, the JA-37 would have SARH Missiles. Not just SARH (Skyflash - a british AIM-7+), but also ARH (AIM-120) ;) Intel i7-12700K @ 8x5GHz+4x3.8GHz + 32 GB DDR5 RAM + Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 (8 GB VRAM) + M.2 SSD + Windows 10 64Bit DCS Panavia Tornado (IDS) really needs to be a thing!

I thought only 2 pylons are usable for Sidewinders. renhanxue Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 On the AJ, yes, only two. On the AJS all six pylons (other than the centerline) are Sidewinder capable.
mattebubben Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 6? Are you guys sure? I thought only 2 pylons are usable for Sidewinders. on the AJS there are 2 pylons that are Aim-9 only. But the other 4 weapons pylons can also carry the Aim-9s.
il_corleone Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 wingtips are only for aim-9, but as mattebubben said, you can also carry them on the "AG" pylons, 2 per wing.
drPhibes Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 From the manual: The plane can carry: * 2x RB24J on hardpoint R7 and * 4 RB24/24J on hardpoint S7 and V7 or * 4 RB24J/74 on hardpoint S7 and V7

BravoYankee4 Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 Well, you can shoot down aircrafts with the Rb 05 (AG) missile as well - not saying it will be easy, but doable :)

Custard Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 This might be interesting to some here. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
mattebubben Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 (edited) as for the RB 05 and Air-Air that would only really be used against transports and helicopters but mainly Helicopters and especially if they were flying low. And for that they should be "ok" enough if there is no better suited weapon loaded. I dont think the idea was to Load with RB 05s and go hunting for Helicopters and Transports but rather if you have them loaded and you come across enemy helicopters or transports flying low and slow then it could be used against them with a decent chance of hitting the target (or Damaging it with a near miss if they were flying low). But the Gunpods or Air-Air missiles were by far the preferred weapon for Air-Air. But in general the RB 05A was a very versatile weapon that could be used against targets on the Land the Sea or in the Air (Though the first 2 where the more effective areas). And as for the suggestion to use the AGM 65s instead i think it would be very hard to try to get a weapons lock on a aircraft with a AGM-65A while flying when you dont have a targeting pod like the A-10C does (id think it would be hard getting a lock with Any AGM 65 variant without the targeting pod to lock the target with) and against a slow target that could not do fast evasive maneuvers the RB 05A might actually have been viable, At least against helicopters and especially against larger transport helicopters (like the Mi-6 and Mi-26) and it would be likely that Helicopters (and especially the large transport helicopters) could play a significant role in supplying and reinforcing a bridgehead in the initial stage. And Mi-6 and Mi-26 should not have been to difficult targets for an experienced pilot even if using RB 05As (Since they are very Large and not that nimble) Edited November 30, 2016 by mattebubben
