Does Oculus require inserting an IPhone into the front viewer?

Does it need a powerful computer to run DCS?

Thank you.

Edit: just found this info

For the full Rift experience, we recommend the following system:

Video Card NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD Radeon R9 290 equivalent or greater

CPU Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater

Memory 8GB+ RAM

Video Output Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output

USB Ports 3x USB 3.0 ports plus 1x USB 2.0 port

OS Windows 7 SP1 64 bit or newer

It wont need phone.. And my I3 6100 + gtx970 oc + 16g runs dcs quite fine with high/medium mix graphics and 1.4 pixeldensity.

Oculus CV1, Odyssey, Pimax 5k+ (i5 8400, 24gb ddr4 3000mhz, 1080Ti OC )

Thanks Haukka81, I had read that it needs more than what is advertised, good to know that it doesn't.

The VR device that uses an IPhone, is that for PCs as well or for another application?

Only good and real 6dof headsets are oculus rift, razer osvr and htc vive. No need of phone in any of those.

Samsung gear vr uses phone but trackking is not good , and display is not so good. So just get rift if you want best for now in flightsims. (Rift has atw, asw so it runs nice even your fps is below 90.

Good to know...thanks again!

Haukka81 can you tell me how you manage to see the keyboard and joystick buttons while having Oculus Rift over your eyes?

Also is Oculus Rift 3D, do you see depth as well as up/down & right/left.

Most people have HOTAS setup like Thurstmaster Warthog. But you can sneak a peek through the bridge of the nose.

And you have all 6 DOF view with Rift.

Don't overlook the Vive either. I know there are a lot of Rift folks here, and it was the first supported HMD, but there are plenty of valid reasons to choose a Vive, beyond just using it for DCS.

Another nice feature of the Vive is that it has a built-in forward facing camera on the front and if you double-tap a button on the side of the HMD, it overlays a view of the outside world. It's not 1:1 picture and looks more like something out of Predator, but it's good enough to be able to look down at your keyboard or controls and get a good sense of where things are at. Can be pretty darn useful and saves you from having to pop up the headset at times.

Also, understand that there's a bit of a trade-off right now when it comes to VR and sims like DCS, and that's visual quality. If you're coming from a pretty decent highrez monitor, you may be a bit disappointed at first that things are not nearly as crisp. But in my opinion, the sense of presence and immersion with VR makes up for that. I could never play on a flat screen again.

I own both a Rift and a Vive as well as GearVR. Rift is technically the best adopted currently(In regards to DCS). But Vive is making great strides as well and is tightening up the race. As for 3D and depth. Yes, that is one of the main amazing aspects of VR. You will feel like you are sitting in an actual cockpit, everything will be in 3D. The panels and dash will have depth, the controls will look like you could use them. You will look around and see all as you would if you were sitting in the actual aircraft. Exit the plane and it will be like you have that plane in real size in front of you.

As for accessing/seeing controls. Well you would be surprised how quickly muscle memory kicks in as well as having a decent controller setup placed in logical and correct positions. Also, can always peek if you need to. But really you want to get a good controller and get them mapped to make life easier and even more immersive. Which is the point of it all after all.

I cannot get enough of it. I live in Seattle area, on cloudy rainy days I can load up NTTR and get a little sun therapy while I enjoy my access to virtual Area 51.

Torso,

I just got a Samsung VR to test the waters... Really amazing tech but needs to develop; I'm thinking of jumping in at the next round of 2k each eye. Can you make an apples to apples comparison of Rift vs VR? I think many in the community have are doing the same thing and would benefit from a comparison of someone with both HMDs.

Thanks for your post!

I have good hotas, so no need to keyboard. And using mouse is very easy in VR :)

Best thing in VR is Sense of scale, everything Looks great when size is real. 1:1 size and tracking is wow thing for me :)

To be honest I haven't even attempted DCS on the GearVR yet. I actually had both the Rift and Vive prior to getting the GearVR, so other than the mobile/easily to show a friend with 0 VR exp usage, I don't really put it to use as much given the hardware available to me ;). But I can certainly see over the next couple days if I can give it a go to give some comparative feedback. I do know some others out there have done similar, so reports may have already been posted previously.

I to am waiting for the next gen and already have the funds in an envelope set aside to be used when it arrives. I almost picked up a Pimax due to the reports a much better pic quality than the Vive or Rift but no 6dof so no go. Although I have heard of their HMD's being cannibalized and the panels used being mated with a Rift or Vive to create what some felt would be the ultimate 1st gen VR available. A FrankenVR.

Sadly those people have not been heard from since and their stories now are warning to those that wish to follow in their footsteps. Some of them even had families that were left behind. Perhaps they found what they were looking for. Perhaps not. I don't know myself. :noexpression:

So I wait, patiently, with my envelope, for those words to come, Those very special words. "Available for pre-order"

Heh, maybe I will pickup a Pimax just to see it for myself. :smilewink:

Lots of great info here...thanks to all! I didn't realize there is that much technology out there.

When I say 'real 3D affect' I'm referring to the affect you see when you go to the movie theatre to watch a 3D movie these days...I take it that kind of depth technology is what you're talking about as well.

As for HOTAS, yes I pretty much have everything I use mapped to memory.

Are these VR devices sold in stores to be tested or can only be bought online?

The 3D is fantastic with Rift (I don't have a Vice so can't comment, but would expect it to be similar).

VR is so immersive that when I open the canopy/door at the end of a flight, I feel the cool breeze blowing across me (I really do, although with time this is getting less and less - but then the nausea also disappeared, so the brain has adjusted)

The "3d" you will witness inside the Rift is based on exactly the same principle as the 3d you witness in real life.

In other words, when you have the Rift on, you have in-game binocular vision, by virtue of the images that are displayed to your left eye are slightly offset from those that are displayed to your right eye.

In short, it will feel very much like you are sat inside the cockpit and as you move your head, it will feel, to all intents and purposes, that you are.

even though i have described it, when you try it for yourself, it will still probably take your breath away.

Greyman you described it very well, I have an idea now of what to expect.

I'm looking at getting a new computer soon, then I'll address the VR world:)

I guess more is better with regards to what I should buy?

How much you can spend ? I5 is more than enough for dcs , 1060-1070-1080 (how much you want to spend) and 16g-> ddr4 (more is better)

I'll get 32 ram, maybe 64, I'll get i7, it isn't that much more than i5...it's the video card that costs!! I've read the specs, the 10xx generation is a big improvement now it's about how much I'm willing to spend...like you said.
