NVMe/PCIe SSD or a SATA SSD? :noexpression: I understand that NVMe/PCIe based SSDs are faster - but in the context of DCS, does a SATA SSD do the job well and an NVMe/PCIe SSD would be an overkill? Or is there a tangible difference in the game experience with the NVMe/PCIe SSD? I am asking this solely from DCS's perspective because that's the only game I play. dburne Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Agree with the SATA SSD. I have been running two ea Samsung 840 Pro SSD's for three years now, and they have done great for me. I have one for windows and programs, and one for all my games ( namely DCS). AS DCS grows I will eventually need to replace the one I have my games on with a larger one - and I will go Samsung for it as well. Okay I have the Intel 750 series NVME/PCI and Yes it's fast but there were some issues getting the drivers to load during the Windows install process. Ii work very well with DCS 2.0.x (yeah I loaded DCS 1.5.x on the 2GB WD HDD. :( In game map/data loads on 2.0.x are damn fast sometimes with the odd very short pause, in game map/data load times on 1.5.x can be a few seconds. Asus X99 MB, Intel i7 5930k, 32GB DDR4@2400, nVidia 980ti. YMMV. Control is an illusion which usually shatters at the least expected moment. Gazelle Mini-gun version is endorphins with rotors. See above. Currently rolling with a Asus Z390 Prime, 9600K, 32GB RAM, SSD, 2080Ti and Windows 10Pro, Rift CV1. bu0836x and Scratch Built Pedals, Collective and Cyclic.

Samsung 840 Evo..have a few of those as low cost budget drives...firmware has always been crippled and long term perf. was fixed a few times...time will tell SSD's die with NO warning. One single cell is all it takes for it to go DOWN !!! SkateZilla Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 (edited) Speaking Personally and in the Repair/Custom Build Experiences for friends etc, Samsung's 850 SSDs are tops.. EVO or Pro. Some 840s still need Firmware Updates to fix problems. I've had a few "Cheaper" Drives (PNY, SanDisk, OCZ/AMD Branded etc etc) and they are nice for entry level drives, but eventually run into issues w/ slowing down, and SSDS (Sudden SSD Death Syndrome) etc. Especially the AMD SSDs (which are rebranded OCZ drives), They were prone to just quit w/ no warning, I only use Samsung 850s in custom builds now. SATA is Fine for more Applications, NVMe/PCIe Slot Drives are way too pricey for simply gaming/every day consumer use. Seem to be better in price than Samsung with almost the performance of the Evos, although the MX300 750GB I got is not as fast as their previous drives relative to the current offerings. But at $100 it was too good of a deal to pass up.
