I’ve just made a new refuelling mission for the SU-33. In this training mission we have:

_ 4 Sukhoi-33s devided into 2 squadrons with 30% of fuel

_ 2 tankers IL-78M

_ All of them escorted by another armed Su-27 squadron with full of fuel

The mission starts in the afternoon at 16:10 p.m the sky looks quite clear with several clouds drift at 5000m, windspeed is 0 mps so if you guys are patient you can see the afternoon little by little change into sunset. Just a training day of air refuelling of Russian Airforce, no any conflict. It has been uploading to Lockonfiles

Note: I hope my new refuelling mission is good for all VGA because the framerate always reach from 40 to over 55 on my ATI Radeon 9550 with power of 9600XT (overclocked) with antialiasing = 4X, anisotropic filtering = 8X, RAM 1GB, P4C-2.6Ghz and LO’s medium-high settings

Maybe for veterans its rather simple, but im not able to refuel this beautiful SU :( R u using autopilot or other additional help ? :D Im always after couple tries crashing with IL.

Autopilot doen´t work for refuelling.

You have just to practise. You need to be very confortable with your stick since ytou will need very precise movements to make very small altitud changes to aproach to te refuelling basket and after that while refuelling you still will need to mantening altitud and speed. It is not easy, even for "veterans".

Ironhand´s site has a tutorial , look for it and... practise.

Majesco, thanks for the mission, fun flying formation with the rest of the aircraft and shooting the tankers down after I got my share of fuel! :)

I think most of us are not using autopilot .... were using a thing called practice ...... practice ....... practice :smilewink:

Hi guys, I'll give all of you a tip tomorrow, you guys will find this business's more simple as you thought

HqPL: This business (air refuelling) took me 2-3 hours to complete at first time, I also have a cheap Joystick too (Gravis Xterminator Dualcontrol), it costs $20

Sorry for not speak english well, plz forgive my grammar mistakes

First, thank for your replies. At the beginning of the mission, you’ll see all aircrafts flying in chaotic state but it’s my intention, I want you guys meet with a bit difficulties before approaching the tanker so checkpoints was made close together.

@ HqPL : Yep, air refueling is not a simple business for everyone especially at the first time. If you never do it before, it’s really difficult but if you’ve only once succeeded you’ll find this business much easier at the next times. I know Irondhand’s site and I also have downloaded Ironhand’s movie named “Refuelling Hose and Drogue” guide how to refuel for SU-33 in the air but my English is very bad so I really don’t understand anyword he said in his video (he speaks too fast, hardly for me to understand), just watch the movie and guess what he was doing or take a look at the SU-33 dashboard to know which indicators is on.

But you need more tricky to refuel SU-33 so I highly recommend you should practise refuelling on F-15C first. Now I need 10-15 mins to complete refuelling for the SU-33 only.

And this is my way (air refuelling instruction for the Russian Naval SU-33):

You must remember there’re 2 useful buttons on you keyboard to do this work:

+ Button J - Toggle auto Throttle (this function’ll synchronize velocity of the SU-33 with the tanker)

+ Button H – Toggle auto altitude stabilizer

_ First, define the tanker’s position in the air, go round behind him then open your SU-33’s refuelling boom (to demand tanker releases refuelling drogues) and go straight to the tanker from behind.

il78m_1.jpg

_ Next, RF #2 at the center will be selected by default, you can choose any of three drogues you want to refuel by pressing button “~” on your keyboard to change. in my screenshot below, I chose RF #1 on the left wing of the IL-78M.

At first time, I think you guys will choose RF 2 under fuselage because the IL-78M fuselage is very big and you’ll feel easier than refuelling at drogues under wings because they look very small, very difficult to focus on. If you want to refuel at wings, just change RF 2 into RF 1 or RF 3 by pressing “~”, if you don’t do that you can’t refuel.

su33rf_2.jpg

_ Next step, let’s approach the target:

First, the IL-78M is now at altitude of 1995m, velocity = 500kmph (452) so you must pilot your plane to altitude of 1990m and then press H to stabilize altitude automatically, maximum angle between aircraft daturn and horizon line should be at 3-5 degree.

At a distance of about 200-300 metres, slowly adjust throttle button on joystick to 455 or 460, slowly go to the drogue. If you don’t know how much is enough, look at this: pay attention to small picture, the refuelling drogue should be at the middle of the cockpit area or

su33repair_5.jpg

Sometimes you may fly underneath the drogue and see it above plane’s canopy, it’ll look LIKE THIS:

lower_4.jpg

33rf_3-2.jpg

Use J button to synchronize your plane velocity with tanker’s.

Slowly go higher drogue position, then pilot your plane to the drogue slowly, refuelling pipe will shorten and drogue’ll attract the refuelling boom automatically.

higher_6.jpg

You must remember: should turn Auto Throttle on out of refuelling pipe’s range or as position in above photo (take a look at velocity and altitude in red circle), Auto Throttle doesn’t work if the IL-78M’s drogue caught the refuelling boom.

su33rfling_7.jpg

ref22.jpg

Wait for a few minutes and now, finally your plane is full of fuel and the FUEL MAX indicator is on. Look at the top left of the screen, an information “DISCONNECT NOW” will be displayed and you can terminate refuelling process.

HOPE YOU UNDESTAND AND ENJOY MY INSTRUCTION

Hi All, im really new so be gentle. Where do I put this file to play it? It appears to be a .mis file whereas the other missions ive added are .miz files?

While searching through my file structure in my DCS folder I found an FC2 file with lots of missions including an AAR mission? How do I access this one as well?

Remember I AM new...ish so be kind and treat me like an idiot.

It must be a *.miz File and for all FC3 mission to get access over the GUI:

..\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\Mods\aircraft\Flaming Cliffs\Missions\EN\Single

You can open it in the ME - but not every FC2 mission will work in DCS World (a lot of rename and change of units happen!)

EDIT: This post is from 2006 - so the mission files are pre-DCS World!!!!

I have since found another refuelling mission that somebody posted for A-10's I think? I just edited it in the ME and made everyone Russian, the tanker an Il-78 and the planes all Su-33's (Look at me, editing and sh1t)

I even andded the Russian carrier so I can refuel and then land on the carrier. Woohoo,

P.S If someone could explain how to add my .miz file to this message, I would gladly share it with you.

Hey Luftwoller.

Welcome to the entrance to the rabbit hole that is the mission editor.

To upload a file, just click "go advanced" and then "manage attachments."

A window will pop up and you'll be able to browse to your file, then click "upload" to attach it to the message.

Is there a current tutorial for refuelling these things? I watched Ironhands video, good as it is, its not really current as the heads up looks totally different and I cant seem to get an altitude hold that appears correct. Any ideas?

I ve been following advice from the forums and trained several hours without success.

Each time I hit the drogue, I`m pushed under Texaco's belly like if the fueling pipe was actually a stick. Even if I hard stick left, I`m rolling right. In real operation you have to connect with a 1-3 kts higher speed then the pipe is retracted a bit while speed is adjusted.

Tried manually, auto-thrust, altitude hold, changed gains on stick...
