Lo-fi.. if you do the A-10 as Walmis did the F-15, I will also build a statue of you in my garden !!!

cant wait to see a higly detailed hog !!! if you need something, just let us know

Careful, I might hold you to that.

:megalol:

I'll do my best!

It's a lot of work, though, and it can be hard working on a mesh that someone else built, but I'm already a good way to getting the split ailerons how I want them. I've had to re-do some of the parts because I'm simply not happy with them, but progress is being made.

There is something you could do that would be a terrific help.. I could do with as many pics of the A10 (or vids even better) as anyone can find that show the moving parts in action. Control surfaces, gear etc. The more info I have the better I can make it. I spent some time trauling image search results today, but I didn't find much, and my time might have been better spent actually doing some modeling in hindsight.

thanks again lo-fi for doing this for us. I asked Chizh about the spinning turbines and this is what he said

It is not possible way to do like in AFM Su-25.

For A-10 working Arg40. Value:

-1...0 - spining up.

0...1 - rotation.

I don't quite understand the technical stuff but it might be some help for you guys.

when the A-10 model is reduced to a reasonable poly count, we should try putting some of our current A-10 skins to see how well they match up. Because i can tell with these new models, skinners would have their hands full. Looks like walmis F-15 needs some new templates, and i expect the same from strike's flanker/mig-21.

Well you don't want the modelers to be working around the skins. You'd end up with another low poly model that would fit the skins, but look just as bad. I think we should completely let the skin problem aside, and let them do the best they can on the model itself.

I totally agree. Skins can me added later. The main concern here is obtained a good model. Thanks Strikemax and Lo-Fi. Good luck.

I'm not saying model around the skin because that's just stupid, i meant how well does it match up so we get a small idea. Like what walmis did when he built his model, he put on the old skin and saw it was compatible.

But in the end it turned out those skins weren't compatible. I just don't see a point in doing that other than as for placeholders for screenie purposes, as the model will evolve.

But yes, during the development, please do slap on the skin to see if it fits, but if not, don't TRY to make it fit.

A quick update:

I'll post further updates in a thread over at lockon-models because it seems a more appropriate place for this sort of thing.

The original mesh is a mess, so I'm tidying as I go. I know it looks on from the previews, but there are some really crazy bits of modeling, and it's really hard to work with. At this rate there won't be much of the original left, but it's worth it.

I have remodeled the engine nacelles. Less polys, better shape, and pylons are integral so the smoothing works properly.

Decelerons (split ailerons) needed completely reworking. I looked at some pics of the real thing that Deadman kindly found for me. Now nearly finished, and working just like they should.

The fuselage sadly needs to be completely redone, which will be my next undertaking. I considered leaving it as it is, but it seemed a shame. Thankfully the cockpit is largely ok, if possilby a little too heavy on the polys. the stick is nearly a 1000 on it's own!!

Hardpoint pylons need some attention too, but I think that should be the last thing than needs major tweaking. Major poly savings to be made, though.

I've set up pivots and joints correctly as I go, so animation is fairly trivial once I actually get round to it.

Deadman has seen the results so far today, but I'll maybe post some previews later on.

Hi as Lo-fi has said the work is progressing but I have use most of my pictures. If any one has pictures from air show or on the net please post links. We are looking for detail shots of all control surfaces and any other detail. You can Pm me for file transfers on MSN thanks for any help

CNCs and Laser engravers are great but they can't do squat with out a precise set of plans.

I'll try to look for some but give me like a specific area like the gears or whatever so i can focus on that rather than post something that's already been covered.

A few bits might be handy...

Leading edge slats. I think i've got them right (weren't setup at all in the previous model), but I've only be working from two photos.

Split ailerons. I've been working from a good set of photos, but more are always helpful.

Landing gear. Preferably some shots in transition. A video would be really good.

Any technical data on range of movement for the control surfaces.

Some shots of the cockpit. The model gives me a good reference, but I'd like to be sure its right, as I have to re-do it anyway. 1/5 of all polys in the current model are in the cockpit! 6000 for the ejection seat, 5000 for general stuff, and even 1000 for the joystick. There's not even a pilot yet. I know it needs some level of detail, but polys could be far better spent on areas that are more visible.

Deadman has given me a lot of invaluable material, but more is always welcome.

I'll definately post an update in lock-on models this evening with some previews - it's going really well so far.

I should really post this thread in the general discussion where more people will see it. Just take a look at walmis thread, that thing is filled with pictures.

Would you like photos or videos and animations? I think I can get you plenty of either.

Kungfu, howabout making a new thread in the general section, linking them here.

Hey I cant directly give you the URL's, but there are some amazing pictures of gears and cockpits at this website-

http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/

Go there, click on walkarounds (at the top) then click on jet aircraft walkarounds. Finally scroll down just a bit... The planes are in alphabetical order, so A-10 is in the a's. Very close to the top. There are some real shots of everything you could possible need. Very good stuff. I use most of it for reference on my 1/32 trumpeteer a-10 model. Hope that helps.
