I do not understand why people want to spoil the memory of the Tomcat by claiming it is still an alternative to a current generation fighter like Superbug? The whole tooling, design, production process is different. The Superbug is a digital plane designed integrally on computer, with fully integrated avionics and ecm. Besides state-of-the art human/computer interfaces it flies itself, with fully redundant systems and networked SA.

The Tomcat was a masterpiece of cunning aircraft design, a marvellous engineering succes and an aircraft that helped redesign flight. It deserves more respect than unsubstantiated claims it could live in the digital age.

I'm sorry to say so man but I have the greatest respect imaginable for my granddad but the simple fact is he's dead.

Not only has the Tomcat gone, the age in which it excelled has passed away. the cold war is gone, the big bomber fleets are being scrapped, the analog technology which composes 90% even of the F-14D has been phased out.

Swing wings are a cumbersome hydraulic technology that no-one wants to implement anymore. I agree the tilt-rotor design of the Osprey is based on similar technology, but exactly this fact is considered as one of the main technological risks of that project. If you can do without, like Eagle, Flanker, Mig-29, Hornet, F-16 etc., you save a lot of weight AND gain largely in reliability and maintainability. No swing-wing on F-35 and F-22, Rafale or Typhoon. Should make the picture rather clear.

Wow! somebody REALLY needs to get out the books and research or something.

Well I suppose they always flew the -14 with the -54C every mission, hence the time spent in storage was minimal, considering that the Navy hasnt really had a need for the -54's (which were almost exclusively designed to intercept russian Backfire bombers or any ship killing bombers at that).

IIRC (usually I dont...) werent these weapons supposed to have been designed with a nuclear warhead from the onset?

Personally I think the -54 is a good weapon...if your shooting at drones. I wouldnt want them on my plane.

If you worked on the TOMCAT for 5 years, then you wasted alot of opportunities to ask the pilots about their clearence to fire AIM-54's on fighters as their main BVR weapon.Sad truth was that in the last decade, the F-18 was more on the fighter role than the F-14. The Tomcat was there to get to places far away, but any carrier commander would want to use The hornets AMRAAM capability to fight off a fighter force rather than the Tomcat with AIM-54's,(Not to mention that the Phoenix a specialized weapon, unlike the AMRAAM) or AIM-7's because the supply of Phoenixes are more limited and alot more expensive and the Sparrow is old and imposes limitations on the engagements.

Word pilotasso.... (scratching head) well I guess your right man. You know I cant compete with you.:worthy: Cant believe this, I signed up for the Navy to ask them one specific question and I missed my opportunity:mad: . :D

Seriously F14s are crap and as for the chubby Phoenix.. well why do you think they never used them in Top Gun, which we all know is the most realistic combat movie ever made?

If you said that to a real F-14 pilot he would litterally kill you.

Why did they not use the Phoenix in Top Gun? ok, first of all its TOP GUN you idiot. Also it is well over 300,000 bucks for a single unit and since you obviously didnt know that, you really need to stop talking. Third, in topgun, its TRAINING you ............, JUST like red flag but the Navy's version and do you see killing? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Corsair- Do you actually fly in LoMAC or do you just troll in the forums? If there were not so many knowledgeable patrons here - you might give the F-14 a bad name.

I play with you on hyperlobby, if you havent had the time to ever check the Player Pool...... and also I kinda take that offensively so you can shut up.

He was being sarcastic with his Top Gun remark. Try searching that up in Wikipedia.

Dont break your keyboard, corsair. Seriously. Drop the attitude or else I predict an attitude adjustment course being instructed to you in the not-so-distant future.

I literally doubt that.

That's it? You have to resort to personal attacks when you've run out of material?

Well, forget personal attacks, but downright calling people names :D

Get a clue or two - the Phoenix has been in poor shape lately, and is in fact not competition for the AIM-120. You don't have to like it ... it's just the way things go: AMRAAM got funding for continuing upgrades, Phoenix did not. Range is largely meaningless if your missile will fall prey to simple evasive maneuvering and/or ECM - you don't need to know the missile's 'been launched ... if you know there's a Tomcat in the area you can drag the missile every which way by doing some pre-emptive maneuvering.

It'll work on fighters since it can handle maneuvering supersonic missiles, but it won't work on'em quite as well as say an AMRAAM ... couple that with older seeker and guidance technology and software and you have what is known as an issue.

We could add that with ca. 1000 pounds it's not this month's winning weightwatcher either. You can carry 3 amraams for that weight.

I do that on a daily basis. I also do it by dancing around a pentagram and pressing triangle, circle circle, r1r1L2r1 and hold down shift too to unlock the secret level.
