Put the Iron Gator in (LHD-2)!!! I spent some time aboard it, wasn't fun. Rode in some 53s and 46s off it as well as an LCAC ride out the back door. Pretty impressive ship.

From what I've read, the Wasp class seems to be the way to go.

 

The way to go? Tarawa class was operated since the late 70's till a few years ago so in that regard IMHO they're certainly a more flexible choice than the Wasp class which followed more than a decade later.
