When I get round to upgrading my GTX670, which to be fair still performs pretty well even in NTTR on my 1080p monitor (getting 70-100 fps on the A-10C IA missions, 25-30 over Vegas), I reckon it will be this one I'll go for...

I dont have this card, but I just purchased a NVIDIA GTX PALIT 1080 GAME ROCK 8GB from Aria.

 

Aria are worth taking a look at as some of the prices are cheaper than the usual places like ebuyer and scan

The Asus Dual series have Dual fans and all have two HDMI ports, two Display ports and one DVI port instead of all other 1060s and 1070s cards with one HDMI, three Display Ports and one DVI (except one type of MSI single fan cards also have 2-2-1).

If you are using the Oculus Rift and a TV instead of a usual display which very often do not have Display ports you need two HDMI ports.

 

I discovered that the white body is a bit wide, so some cards can't be installed to the PCI/PCIe slot next to the GFX card because the screws of the expansion card collides with the Asus GFX card.

When you say slot next to GFX card, you mean below right?

 

I have P8Z77-V Pro/Thunderbolt, with a PCI-E Wifi adapter in the PCI-E x1 slot above the Gfx card. Looks like that will be fine with the Dual OC, as there's no armour over the PCB on the non-fan side, same as my current card.

I bought the card to use it with a Oculus Rift CV1, but VR (at least at the current state) is nothing for me.

GTX 1070 is highly recommended. I have the Zotac 'Mini' version of the card, which was the cheapest 1070 I could find :) The stock cooler is excellent, and while you said you don't overclock, it's very easily done and my cheapo-1070 easily goes over 2.0 GHz, making it about as fast as a stock GTX 1080.

 

The 1070 is good for 4k and in my own experience, gives nearly the same framerates at 3840 x 2160 as it does at normal 1080p. So, it's fantastic for 1440p displays, which are a very nice resolution to use. The new 10-series cards are all great for high res displays and have lots of video memory. Keep in mind, I clamp my framerate in graphics.lua to 50 FPS, so if you're one of those 300 FPS types, you're better off with a 1080 Ti.

 

Speaking of which, if you want an extra 'edge', don't bother with the GTX 1080. I'm not really sure why they even make them. Get a 1080 Ti--yes, it's much more expensive, but also gives a massive performance improvement for the money. The normal 1080 just doesn't seem like very good value to me. Just overclock your 1070 with a couple clicks, and you're almost at 1080 performance.

 

Finally, drivers have recently gotten better and I've noticed higher framerates with them.

I have this exact GPU, running on a Asus X99-PRO/USB 3.1 ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard with an i7-5820. I'm no PC expert so all I can really say is that its build quality feels high, it was plug and play, and it's run perfectly since day one, which was 9 months ago. It replaced a GTX 770 with predictably a big performance boost. The PC it's in is the one I use for DCS. If there's some sort of (simple) benchmarking software or DCS scenario you want me to run and report back on its performance I'm happy to.

What monitor do you use, and what fps do you get in say Nevada A-10C CAS instant action mission? I currently get between 30-50 with terrain textures on low, every thing else high. Thanks, R

Happy to help. I have a 27" monitor set at 1920x1200. I don't have the A-10C but I jumped in the Gazelle on 2.05 (not 2.1) and flew through downtown Las Vegas a few times averaging 80 FPS, and it generally stays within 75-85. This is with everything on High. If I take textures from High to Low or take civilian traffic from High to Low it barely makes a difference. I've attached a screen shot of my exact setting below.

Mind You, 2.1 and 2.0.5 are very different animals in hardware requirements department. You can forget about such performance in 2.1 with above settings and Deferred Shading on.

That's great, thanks! What are your other specs and case type? I may go with the blower type as I have that already with my Palit GTX670 and I get decent temps (55C ish) with my I7-3770K at 4.2GHz.

I'm a bit concerned open air cooler will raise my temps, so just keen to know!

Sure thing. My temps on that downtown Vegas with everything on high scenario are 49-54C.

Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor @ 3.9.

Noctua - NH-U9S 46.4 CFM CPU Cooler

Rosewill - Legacy QT01-S ATX Mid Tower Case

Also as an experiment switched out the Gazelle for the Mustang and the fps was 90+.
