So I've been thinking about upgrading my current PC, I built it around 5 years ago as my first setup and it seems to be in need of some, work.

The current Specs are:

MOBO: Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H

RAM: Corsair Vengeance RAM (1600MHz) (2x4gb)

CPU: i5 4670K (3.4GHz)(Boost to 3.8GHz)(4 cores 4 threads)

GPU: Gigabyte GTX 760 OC windforce(2gb VRAM)

Storage: WD Blue 1TB (7200 RPM)

I would prefer not to get a new motherboard. I would like to stick with Haswell LGA 1150 CPU's

Currently I'm looking at

swapping the CPU with an i7 4790K (4.0GHz)(Boost to 4.4)(4 cores 8 threads)

swapping the GPU with a Gigabyte GTX 1070 G1 (8gb VRAM)

adding 8 more gigs of Corsair Vengeance RAM making the total 16gb (4x4gb)

adding another WD Blue 1TB

Running NTTR and Normandy has been a nightmare for me, I'd like to have a good setup for all the new aircraft and maps coming up! :pilotfly::thumbup:

Do you guys think this will be a good setup? Do you have any suggestions? Really debating spending a grand on this overhaul for the sake of fully enjoying the F-18C, F-14A/B, AV-8B NA, Mi-24P, F-4E and more.

Note: I am only running a single 16:9 1080p monitor, I simply want a smooth, high graphical fidelity DCS to play with! Thanks everyone

the 4790k is a great cpu, I ran mine at 4.8 with watercooling. the gpu is a good choice and the ram upgrade really is a must.

my previous pc was

i7 4790k

16gb ram

gtx 970

managed to get a solid 80fps on max settings so I'm sure with the 1070 you will have no problems at all.

however I highly recommend watercooling the cpu

Hi Pilot, note my specs. I'm using the same CPU you have. I've had it O/C'd to 4.2ghz since I purchased it. No issues. Just an FYI if you wish to save a little coin, and build a newer rig down the road.

Maybe you can add an SSD into your mix...

MSI MAG Z790 Carbon, i9-13900k, NH-D15 cooler, 64 GB CL40 6000mhz RAM, MSI RTX4090, Yamaha 5.1 A/V Receiver, 4x 2TB Samsung 980 Pro NVMe, 1x 2TB Samsung 870 EVO SSD, Win 11 Pro, TM Warthog, Virpil WarBRD, MFG Crosswinds, 43" Samsung 4K TV, 21.5 Acer VT touchscreen, TrackIR, Varjo Aero, Wheel Stand Pro Super Warthog, Phanteks Enthoo Pro2 Full Tower Case, Seasonic GX-1200 ATX3 PSU, PointCTRL, Buttkicker 2, K-51 Helicopter Collective Control

Hmmm, noted. Thanks!

what temps are you getting with the OC'd 4670K? What heatsink/cooler?

But if you go water, I've heard of folks taking it to 4.5ghz without issue. I'm fine leaving mine at 4.2ghz. And I've had NO heating issues. I haven't measured in a while, but I'll check.

If you check neweggs of the world, Thermaltake AIO water cooler isn't much more than the Noctua heatsink.

And SSD is *MUST*

No worries, I'm gonna go with that, If for whatever reason I have a bad chip that doesn't like to OC I'll eventually swap to the i7 if need be. Good call on OC'ing the i5, should save me some money. Thanks!

And do get an SSD (512GB should be enough) for the saved money.

Hmmm, thinking about putting ol faithful (the GTX760) in a glass case. It'll be a discussion piece 30+ years from now lol, a piece of technological history, just like those old 80s desktops. Or the computer on the Apollo 11-17 LM
