INS Position Update and Offsets

Hi!

 

I read the whole manual and chuck's guide and all I learned was alignment, wp entry and edit. there is nothing about offsets, and the position update in the manual is quite poor.

 

I could not find Zeus post about offset so I came here to ask for help.

 

Can anyone teach me or point me into the right direction for learning about offsets and position update?

 

 

Also, how can real mirage pilots update their ins in bad wheather conditions? They just dont take off? :lol:

IIRC it is covered in the training missions: M3 with markpoints and TaCAN offset, M10 for offset for precision bombing. Have you flown these already? WPs in VTB are also covered in training...

I believe there is a "feature" in the VTB , that you have to have the waypoint in range and more or less face the waypoint to make it appear on the VTB.

I learned that the wp are shown by clicking validate on ins, but they must be in range for them to show on screen.

I think flying all the training missions will answer quite a lot of your questions. Also if you have any remarka / missing things let me know. I would recommend to then fly the campaign as it adds to the training.

One last question. Are those missions updated enough as of not to confuse the user? I know zeus changed a lot after they were created. Maybe im wrong

I built most of them based on how things are supposed to look in the final version - so its rather problem with things that are not implemented yet than with things that were changed. I know that in gunnery training there is currently a mistake with CAS mode which doesn't exist in AA mode. Also, arriving from desired direction does not work. But most of the missions are fine. Just make sure to keep the advised speeds etc.

The training missions say that the operational mode in STS gives you the allignment status. But it doesnt seem to work while in the air.

 

I want to see how not aligned it is while flying to see if it requires an update. But in STS it only shows me the WP number :(

The STS mode gives you your alignment status that is the process you do when you start up the INS.

It does not give any other informations after you alignment is done.

Oh ok. Kinda imagined that. What is the way of knowing the alignment status in flight?

Don't think you can do that, ie see what is the drift after flying for some time... only if you get to a known waypoint (placed on a landmark) and see that the waypoint has moved in relation to it.

Ok. After doing that, what I noticed is that only by pulling some Gs in two or three turns after starting in the air, the WPs get to drift. Is this normal? With just a few turns and the INS starts to suffer?

Yeah it is quite normal. The more aerobatics you do, the more gyros and sensors loose their calibration. In normal flight it was.. ee.. don't remember now, 1 mile per hour of flight? So quite a lot!

Good question! Perhaps someone knows the answer. But good point in general that we could add this info (ie the drift etc) to the manual, thanks!

You can also make INS updates in IMC, nothing stops you about that but VOR, TACAN and ILS is safer in this conditions because one little thing.

 

In IMC you can´t see the terrain to make the update, and VOR, TACAN and ILS are instrumental navigation aids without this problems.

I would like to see you land in IMC without ILS or TACAN, you need at least an ILS.

 

You can do an overfly update of a TACAN station if you really want to update you INS.

 

For navigation 1 nm/h is not a problem because if you have good condition you spot the runway visually and in bad condition you use VOR, TACAN and ILS regardless.
