It's only nickname...

Viper: the unofficial nickname

The F-16 is often referred to as the "Viper", a nickname especially popular with people involved with the F-16. Before "Fighting Falcon" was selected as official name, pilots at Hill AFB, the first F-16 base, came up with a number of proposals, including "Viper". Lt. Col. Pat "Gums" McAdoo, USAF Ret., one of the first F-16 pilots at Hill AFB, recalls the origin of the name "F-16 Viper":

At end of runway, the F-16 did resemble a cobra or something as it approached you. However, I think Northrop had already taken that name for the YF-17.

We all voted, and Viper came in really high. Seems there was a series on TV that had 'colonial Vipers' flying off of Battlestar Galactica (a term later used for the Eagle).

In any case, the Generals didn't want a plane 'named after some snake'!

Falcon was a good name, and it fit in with the motif that the Eagle had created. Sort of a little brother, but still a 'Bird of Prey'. In fact, GD had a great promo out in late 70's called "Bird of Prey", and it used the Falcon as the real world model.

Even when F-16 Fighting Falcon became the official name, Viper stuck around and became the unofficial nickname for the F-16. The name "Viper" is even officially used for the Joe Bill Dreyden "Semper Viper" award, which is awarded for excellent airmanship by F-16 pilots.

What's the connection between vipers and F-16s? Are they the same aircraft, or is viper a variant??

All figthers have 2 nicknames, 1 givem by de manufacturer --fighting falcon-- and the other by pilots--VIPER--.

This one was given because the first test pilot was bitten by one that crawled into the cockpit during the night...

no, J/K :D

No, at first I though it was because of the snake scale shaped access maintenance panels at the dorsal area of the plane but I digged it and the real reason is because the old series battlestar galactica was being aired on TV at the time the F-16 entered service and the series VIPER space fighters had in turn joysticks inspired on that of the real F-16, so the nickname sticked on the plane.

Check youtube for battlestar galactica. :)

Oh man! I got it (*.wav) in my cellphone. When I'm bored - just playing

Pilotasso: 'Jaszczomp' means 'Hawk' but with spelling errors (it's written like You hear ;) or we hear). All the story is when 1st lady gave 1st plane such name and how she said that ;) It was really, really funny... She's godmother of our F-16 :geek:

Pilotasso;

I think the fact that Poland has both Mig -29 and F-16 in the flight line give them a great chance to become training center for Dissimilar training. Countries that fly the F-16 can go there and have facilities geared for F-16 and train against Mig-29 and vise versa for countries flying the Mig-29.

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.
